Cant see us taking more than 400 for a wet Tuesday cup game that is almost a 3 hour drive from Swindon.

We will lose.

No - the EFL sells the rights to the competition as a whole to foreign TV channels.  For example, ESPN+ has the USA rights and essentially shows whatever Sky put on.  No investment in streaming anything beyond those games already televised so they have zero production costs to cover.

sounds like the Beversbrook internet isn't up to press conferences over Skype.

- not sure what he going to do selection wise given Saturday (yeah right)

- would ideally like another 3 in. might only get 1 or 2 (talking to them)

"Jonah got involved with the singing. Then Udoka got tagged in John Lennon's actual Instagram story today.

The noise after from the fans was like we'd won. It was amazing. We need to keep that togetherness, and it will be really important to do that during any tough runs. It will take you a long way and give you a much better chance of success."

Not sure that John Lennon would have the faintest idea what Instagram was, I imagine.

I can believe that. If Colchester went ahead and i could have seen him swapping 3 or 4 players around, and then bring back the first team for Crewe. He gets minutes into people, which makes it easier for the large changes in JPT with their rules as well.

I expect probably the same line up tonight, but depends on new signings fitness for this non stop list of games in the opening weeks, how much you can use Austin etc.

I struggle to see why these games can't be streamed in the UK. Outside the 3pm Saturday blackout window. Costs must be absolutely minimal. Infrastructure/equipment is there at every ground already. Fans want to watch. Bizarre.

Title: Re: Peterborough United v Swindon Town EFL Cup First Round South
Post by: RobertT on Monday, August 7, 2023, 13:35:16
Yep - because they sell the TV/streaming rights as a single package to potential bidders, which makes more money than a bunch of unknown games each year.  When they sell the TV deal for the league itself, they carve out streaming to enable iFollow.  Given the sheer volume of fixtures, the TV companies probably do not chop off any premium as a result - plenty of games to choose from and they can't show 3pm games anyway.  The Cup is not protected by the blackout, so the TV companies want the pick and not to be restricted.

Yeah always associate them with scoring loads. Tough place to go for a new group of players - respectable scoreline falls marginally behind no injuries on my wishlist for tomorrow night. Saturday far more important.

Peterborough 4-3 Swindon.

In his pre-match presser Flynn said he'd never lost a first round EFL cup game.

I suspect tonight might be his first. 3-1 Posh is my prediction.

It will be an interesting challenge given we have yet to have played a competitive game and Posh won their game on Saturday. Will the extra 'rest' work or will we be rusty as fuck? the priority of course is Crewe in the league, but to get into the 'hat' for the next round would be a good fillip.

Going to guess that we go with something like:

                                              Mahoney

                               Minturn      Brewitt    Ward

                     Genesini                                     Uwakwe

                                        Khan          Cain

                                                Shade

                                       Young           Wakeling

And get pumped 5-2 as a result!

Pre match taking the EFL Cup seriously in The Drapers Arms.

Hopefully Flynn will be as well.
An opportunity to play the strongest side available with no prospect of extra time (I think) & should still be fresher than Crewe for Saturday.
In theory.
And look after Charlie of course.

Got as far the threshold of the away end on Saturday.
Hearing the fans in full voice has just whetted the appetite ahead of this evening & Saturday.

I think we'll do ok tonight.
Basing that only on Flynn's cup record and the law of averages.
Eight consecutive first round exits, but we did hold our own against higher league opposition in those losses.
Doesn't count for much but cup ties v Peterborough have traditionally been tight affairs.

Nearly 7 years since last visit here (with fans) & always one of the better away days with the barge pub to look forward to later.
A 7.30 kick off and half empty stadium always feels like the hosting club isn't treating it like a regular fixture, we'll see.

Today's fun fact is that Austin scored in the crazy 5-4 defeat here in 2010.
If he nets this evening then the statisticians might be dusting down the STFC record books for longest gap between goals against same opposition.

Anyway, might go and have a look at the very impressive Gothic Cathedral, or then again might just go on a pub crawl instead.

I’d agree, don’t think there will be many changes.

Give that team an hour and see how it is.
If the game is still in the balance try & win it, if not then make a few subs.

Almost use this as another pre season game

Be a tight one tonight I think. I reckon we’ll stick with our full strength XI (minus maybe Austin) from Saturday and Peterborough will make a few changes, game will be in the balance until late on when both teams make changes, they bring on their first teamers and we bring on our squad players. 2-0 loss but more interested in the performance and how we’ve gelled.

Yeah, stopped off in Charters a number of times before.
Great selection of ales plus a beer garden area on dry land adjacent.
Food tends to be an afterthought on away days though!
Have heard that the restaurant might be a tad overpriced but glad that both are still going.

Would be nice to have a cup run, but not at the expense of our aspirations in the league. Peterborough away always strikes me as a tough affair, as said before, seems like they are always one of the top scorers in the EFL. Hoping to see a follow-on from the Plymouth performance and further signs that things are starting to come together, a win would be a nice bonus. Cannot believe it has been so long since our last win in the League Cup, from memory, we have had a couple tough ties in that time.

Just enjoying 2nd pint in Charters Bar on the River Nene.
Hopefully this won't be the high water mark of the season.
This place is normally heaving with the Pee'a'burrah massive an hour and a half before kick off.
Not so this evening.

With Posh being a bit of a yo yo club between L1 & Championship then that does mean that the home terrace doesn't have to be sorted out.
Have read mention of a new stadium in the vicinity.

Didn't realise that this was also a new town to cater for London overspill.
That's evidenced by the continued presence of Barry Fry I guess.

We can do this.

Good evening Wobbly

Hope you have a great evening and enjoy the football.

Good to meet up on Saturday, albeit almost by accident.
Certainly a salutary lesson for me that TEF posters encountered in the flesh are not at all like their online persona's!
Hope that you manage to get to a game during the remainder of your stay.
All the best.

Kudos to us then. Though maybe, if you think about it they know we didn’t have a game on Saturday and would be not so much desperate but certainly keen to get some game time in before the second league game on Saturday.

Strange that Cain is there but not listed with the subs when we’ve only named 7 out of a possible 9 subs.

Also Adver reckons McEachran is out with illness. Doubt that’s a cover up for anything (cue photos of him signing elsewhere) as everyone I know seems to be ill at the minute

Swindon genuinely the better team this half, the goal was against the run of play. I don't like to say it, but it looks like we're missing a 6'7 carthorse of a striker. So far, FBT, Kemp and Uwakwe are stand out for me, RHM also gets an honourable mention. Austin seems to be marked out the game and pretty absent

We've held our own.
UGM has demonstrated pace & recovery and not averse to joining in attacks.
Tariq looks comfortable in the advanced wing back role & can get the ball in, but reliance is still on Hutton on the other side.
Kinsella's work has largely gone unnoticed which is a good thing.

The 2 absolutely key players are Kemp & FBT though.

I think we'll see a lot this season of teams marking Charlie very tightly, him not appearing to do a great deal, but the fact that they're focusing on him creates a lot of space for RHM, Kemp and others who will really, really thrive on that. He's almost a decoy striker... except when people do realise that and try to defend against our whole attacking unit, that should bring him more chances.

I feel the same (although cannot attend on Saturday). Under Morris and Lindsey we hardly took any shots and it was absolutely infuriating as well as being dull as hell.

I pull your chain as i know you away from here so hope you know i am messing half the time with you mate. Sounds good tonight doesn't it tbf

On a side note i wonder if we will see Minturn out on loan soon as if he doesn't get minutes tonight it's a shame. If we see the new lad as a better option i have no problem with that i just hope we do something with Minturn and not leave him on the bench doing nothing

Some prioritise entertaining football, some just want to win. Under Lindsey and Morris we failed spectacularly at both.

Yeah Minturn better off playing than sat on the bench right down the pecking order. Ideally get him to a National League Club, but if not National League South and playing.

I bizarrely ended up chatting to a German football manager recently who agreed that 'Pep worship' has ruined many lower league teams. The style simply can't be successfully implemented with waifs and strays in L2, and when it is implemented badly it is absolutely unwatchable.

Key features from tonight:
Defence looked solid, the 3 CBs all had good games
Wing Backs looked dangerous, both put in decent crosses and were confident on the ball
Midfield looked a little lightweight, but full of flair
Austin was anonymous for most parts
Mahoney had nothing to do for 94 minutes and then pulled off two blinding saves
Town were the better team for large periods
Flynn IN
One million percent better than last season

Darn. Really good effort.
Undone by superior technique in the shoot out.
Our record must be pretty abysmal since penalties were introduced.
And it's over a number of years covering many different Town sides.
Very strange.

In addition to those mentioned at half time, Khan put a really good shift in & Brewitt very good as well, unsurprisingly.

Hopefully those that haven't seen the team in action yet will be pleasantly surprised on Saturday.

Didn't know what to expect tonight, with the new faces & style, but my God it was refreshing. The back 3 were solid & all of them looked comfortable coming out with the ball, both wing backs looked dangerous, which gave us options on both sides, not just the right. Kinsella & Kemp have given us what we've been missing in midfied, grit & flair, if I'm honest only Charlie looked a bit off the pace. The performance was typifyed by the goal, last season FBT would have looked for the sideways or backwards pass, today he looked forward played a quick ball through to HM, who finished brilliantly.  I like the Flynn style & filled with optimism after that, really enjoyable! Oh & Tom Brewitt is a good defender, my MoM

Flynn post match with Andrew Hawes:
- Take a whole lot from that.
- Thought we were the better team over the duration of the game
- 23 shots away from home against a very, very good League 1 team who didnt make many changes from Saturday
- Very proud of them
- Did everything well apart from for their goal
- Went 1 for 1. Picked up second ball. Pressed them. They had to change formation
- Wish we'd taken advantage of more chances
- Changes weren't pre-planned, but several players haven't had a pre-season, so was being careful
- Got a small squad at the moment so common sense had to prevail
- Those who came on gave a good account of themselves
- They all stood out today
- Been sending RHM videos of left foot finishes. Don't want him turning down opportunities on his left.
- They are all in tune
- We are going to play football
- We found ways to break lines all over the pitch
- Thought we were brilliant today
- Mahoney is a keeper with a bright future.
- Didn't have many saves to make but made 2 brilliant ones
- Thats the standard to maintain
- Better tonight than vs Plymouth as it was a competitive game
- If we play like we did against Plymouth every game then we won't lose a game
- That won't happen as players do have dips in form etc
- McEachran was ill this morning. Didn't want the illness to rip through the squad
- Cain had a back spasm
- Genesini: Done well. Got him at the right price. Can play a number of positions. We might have a little gem

Phil Smith post match:
- Wouldn't imagine too many more signings unless Flynn wants a particular player. Squad has depth
- Pleased Mahoney did well with a couple of good saves
- RHM and Brewitt played well and were MotM contenders
- Kemp best of the debutant. First half was fantastic. Should have scored in second half when 1 on 1 with keeper.
- Jake Young caught the eye with quick feet and good touches

But our fans say we defended well so I'll assume they showed every posh chance and the rest were thwarted.

Good finish by RHM.. The keeper would be annoyed at himself but was probably expected it to go across him

The ever brilliant Rich Banyard gave out this stat last night.

I'll be honest, we've won loads more shoot outs than I thought. I could only remember 4.

It's actually 11 wins and 14 defeats in shootouts... BUT...

1 out of 4 in playoff matches
0 out of 1 in the FA Cup
0 out of 6 in the League Cup
10 out of 14 in minor cup competitions

Except for Charlton, we only win the crap ones!

I guess the minor competitions are far less likely to stick in the memory. I think we've beaten Oxford twice in minor comps. (maybe more) Once in the ZDS cup and once in the Johnstone's paint. (to break the 7 in a row)

Nope. Didn't count, apparently.

Always makes me laugh when they say this.

Then they sell out when they get to wembley in said competition

"They were more aggressive than us"

Not sure of the last time an opposition manager said that about us!

Genuinely years. The Wellens side could be aggressive at times but going back past that I’m struggling!

Surprised watching the highlights, as they don't seem to back up what Flynn said:

Just watched the full game back and i agree with Flynn, we looked very impressive and frustrated Posh throughout the majority of the game.

Also just watched the full match replay and we looked a very decent side. Would have been nice to have won the penalty shoot out so we could actually say we won a cup tie but it ultimately doesn't matter and everyone should feel very positive going into the first home game of the season on Saturday...

It is totally laughable, but do you honestly believe our fans would not be exactly the same were the shoe on the other foot!

Just log into your ifollow account via the official Swindon site, (or register if you haven't already) and click on latest videos. There are highlights, extended highlights, or the whole game.

Fucking hell Mahoney looks mustard. One of my big concerns this season was if we were going to get a loan more in the BFG/Brynn mould or another Kovar and we seem to have landed on our feet.

Fair play to Wakeling, nothing on and almost scored an absolute wonder goal.

Just go here and register...

You can then watch extended highlights / full match replays. You don't have to pay anything for those*

*Someone may correct me but I'm pretty sure I don't!

The issue is, they count the very same competition in their wins. They do mental gymnastics and say it doesn't count after B teams were introduced even though its the same competition.

In short, they're fucking moronic cunts.

Lovely finish by Posh on 7 minutes from a very slack pass from Charlie. Shame as we had started the game really well.

30 minutes in - Randall just missed a gilt edged chance to make it 2-0. So far it's been a really impressive performance, A couple of times when we had a really good chance to break into a good position a heavy touch or a poor decision has just hindered us. The whole team looks comfortable. Godwin-Malife is handling the pacy Jade Jones very very well. He looks a superb player.

That Kemp chance... Great defensive header from Brewitt to set the move off but how has he not he the target?!

Certainly had my doubts about Hutton this season defensively, however UGM looks like the perfect man to back him up. RH  can certainly hit around 15+ assists again - just hope there’s no beach posts 😁

Just seen that. Pretty terrible miss you have to say. Just before that Brewitt (sorry Browitt) made a superb tackle/interception in the box. As others have said, the back 3 have played really well.

Is he very left footed? It looks like it would be a more natural right footed shot but he hits it with his left.

We know Brewitt has a tendency to over-commit, which should be mitigated by being in the middle of a back three. I think he could prove the doubters wrong this season.
