What a night that was.
I remember the pub near the ground before the game was rocking.
The other odd thing was that the Town fans in the seats were at the other end from the terrace if I remember correctly.
Obviously the Tranmere fans after the game, so much different than those wankers from Brighton & Port Vale.

That night certainly is living long in the memory. Tranmere fans were the most sporting I have ever had the pleasure to witness.

They still moan about the december floodlight game though

I still have the utmost respect for Tranmere because of this.

Long memories in football, good and bad.

Absolutely. When it was announced near the end of the game (with us ahead on aggregate) that the Tranny fans would be allowed on the pitch, I feared the worst but needn't have worried.... Little did I know that I would end up after the game, singing 'Tranmere, Tranmere, Tranmere' along with the rest of the Town fans... a unique occasion which will never be forgotten by anyone who was there...

I assume had Tranmere scored again to make it level on aggregate, we'd have still gone through on away goals after 90 minutes?

Nope, ET & Pens as no away goals rule.

A rule we benefitted from in 87

Not only that, I'm sure that away goals counted in the semis, which is why Gillingham beat Sunderland, but they didn't count in the Final, hence why we went to a third game having drawn 2-2 with Gills having scored an away goal (which you are referring to of course) Just going to check on that now to make sure I'm talking complete bollocks...

Yeah... Different rules in the semis to what they had in the final.

Gills 3 Sunderland 2
Sunderland 4 Gills 3

Gills through on away goals... a rule which was abandoned for the Final.... bizarre... not complaining though...

They only counted after extra time, we’d have scored again in ET, honest

Was the final also 2 legs in those days?

Yeah, we lost 1-0 in pikeyland & won 2-1 at home

Like the Tranmere semi final, no one who was there will ever forget that Gillingham trilogy... 10,000 Town fans at Selhurst for the replay.... at that point, far and away the most Town fans I'd seen in one place outside of the CG...

Tranmere away.

I was at the home semi final and at Wembley. I couldn't go to the away match at Tranmere so was listening to 5 Live (or whatever it was called in those days) for updates as they had the Portsmouth Leicester game as their main match.

I remember we were 2-1 down and they crossed to Prenton Park just as Hoddle had committed the foul for the penalty, and they talked about it for what seemed like ages before announcing that Swindon had scored an equalizer a couple of minutes before.

Not sure how many we took to Wolves in the league cup semi- final, but was certainly one of the biggest before then that I’d seen

At the time it was reported that we took 8000 to Arsenal and around 10000 to Wolves

Was a beautiful night. Especially as I'd just moved to Kent the year before! Bragging rights!

Some great memories in this thread.

All remembered as clear as if they happened only 1 year ago.
