But saying that. You're only 34 posts into being on the TEF... you have another 200 before you get used to it. I'm known as Mr Super-Positive and I've only just gotten used to it. But I completely know what you mean. It's called "Support" for a reason. Because you SUPPORT your team, not MOAN at your team. "Oh, you're into football. Who do you support?" "Nobody. I just moan at Swindon Town's lack of winning every single game ever." "Right... so you're a Swindon fan." "Yeah, I guess I'm a fan. But I'm definitely not a supporter." We have a shoestring budget and no one expected anything when we kicked off the season. We have played some great football and enjoyed some brilliant wins. Who in their right man would have continued to risk players when a play off place and a home second leg was guaranteed. Players such as Luango needed a breather and he has had one, consequently he will be refreshed come May 7th. I hope Cooper mixes it again Sunday as the game is not important.
Fingers crossed we get a positive result Thursday and receive the backing come the home leg. Cooper and the players deserve this and if we can make Wembley and perform like we can then it could be a perfect season. I actually stood in the middle of the Wednesday fans next to the fence. I was simply blown away. The noise, the smell. Everything. I gazed across the pitch, the Town End in full voice but the travelling Wednesday made it a great atmosphere and the singing made me realise that this was where I wanted to be. I could have turned to Reading due to a grand dad, even worse Oxford because of an Uncle but more likely Portsmouth due to my family. However this was special, I felt I belonged and ever since that time I have no regrets mate. The Town End became my second home. Still remember being crushed against Everton in the cup but nothing would ever take me away. Love Swindon like you do and now we face the ultimate challenge, the season wrapped up in a few games. But despite this the moaners and groaners come out to play. Fuck em' . Bring it on now. Sheffield United or Chesterfield. Cancelled all my meetings Thursday as my heart, head and in person will be where it has always been since Sheffield Wednesday 74/75. Starting to get a little nervous though. Over to you jay box and the like . Sadly Sky has had a negative impact on the lower league attendances as did the all seater grounds. The days of no internet made moaning insignificant. Sadly football will never be the same. However I don't miss the trouble inside the grounds and you kind of feel safe now taking young kids to football. I don't think I would have said that in the 70's and 80's. Everyone owned a silk scarf back then. I also remember the rosettes as well :) Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 06:46:38 Silk scarves. That certainly wasn't the retort I expected. Please can someone help...please. Probably before my time but never heard of glitter on boots. Mind you I would have been a very young lad then. Just loved the TE and the noise, it was loud when we used to get attendances circa 7000 or over. The majority of kids back then owned a pair of DM's. Warm and comfortable and were the standard shoes or in this case boots that you could also wear to school. Think mine had 8 holes but were definitely the dark OX blood type with the air soles :) Oh and I also had a green parka with a fur hood a little earlier. Football then was more of an adventure and going with my Brother and mates by train was special. Looked forward to it and counted down the days from Monday. Still blame STFC for my education and had to work hard after school to catch up. However as NZ Robin will tell you St Birinus was not a model school :) Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 08:59:14 And it still amazes me how the same size crowd then made so much atmosphere ,noise and unbridled passion for their team. Its a shame lots of our fans will never ever experience that type of support. Please can we bring some of it back before the noise level compares to snooker!!! Over to you jay box and the like . I will never forget a couple of days after Macari was sacked and we played a home game with Saarfend and there was a crowd of only 2,700 there yet made more noise than we made with 30,000 at Wembley, or so it felt. When we had 28,000 vs Arsenal, Wolves and Spurs in 79/80 it was the loudest thing I had ever heard as a young teenager, shame those days will never revisit the CG. Passion is whats missing now its too civilized at games. Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: ekarot on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 09:08:38 Just half the noise and passion of the palace home leg play off and the Blackburn home and away play off would do for me please anything like those atmospheres can only help the team and encourage the more placid to actually become involved :beers:

I've tried to work out what is, but I think its many things.
- Low turnout from opposition fans - surely this isn't new though. - Less hostile away fans. - Dwindling Townend numbers, a lot of us old farts moved to the side stands when we had kids. Doesn't seem to be much backfill - Things are just different now. In this case, different worse. Its a lot different, goal music, people happy to clap along to glad all over, that sort of thing. Not my bag but not having a go either because a lot of people seem to like it. - An irrational dislike of Power and Cooper. Maybe the day will come when this is deserved, but it still seems to me that some people don't rate Cooper, and some people don't get the feeling we are going anywhere with Power. I guess what I mean is the club cutting its cloth according to income isn't that exciting. Particularly straight after the insanity of the Di Canio era. - And many many more... Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 11:13:08 It's interesting that those remembering a 'better time' long for a good atmosphere now. From where I sit in the DRS it's the old farts whose only interest is moaning and not in getting behind the team. Even at Colchester I was sat behind a miserable old cunt whose only response to the game was to complain at Luongo. The CG demographic, is increasingly middle aged say 30-60, and in all likelihood fans who've been going for a number of years, which as Town fans, means you're pretty much steeped in disappointment, to a lesser or greater extent. The important thing, is that they're still going. Many of the more garrulous types, who shout a bit, wave a few flags etc, often haven't the attention span required for a lifetime of suffering, and rapidly drop out. Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: paddieu on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 13:40:36 It seems to be a common theme these days that many home crowds dont make much noise anymore - you even read it about liverpool. So I'd be interested in people's feedback regarding comparisons with other clubs, and especially with ones that still do mkae a noise, and see what we might learn from that.
And I agree re Town End movement out, no backfill etc. For me that would make a good case for building a bigger one with a better view, to see how many people would then move back there and help the noise happen. I for one would do so. Hard to get anything going in the Ark or DRS. I also remember the gathering of noise makers at the DRS where it meets the SB end. When did that disappear ? I recall it especially around 1992 or so. Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: @mwooly63 on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 13:45:40 I also remember the gathering of noise makers at the DRS where it meets the SB end. When did that disappear ? I recall a season in the early 2000's when Town End prices went really cheap while South Stand prices went high. All the singers then relocated. Its probably what needs to happen to put some life back into the Town End again. Title: Re: Moaners and groaners Post by: DarloSTFC84 on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 13:52:13 Danny Dyer?

How they choose to do it is their prerogative, too much of this 'superman' shot kicking around. The club needs the 'moaners' money as much as anybody else's. Which is a perfectly valid point if STFC were just a business, like Franchise. But it's not. It's a football club, with an atmosphere, a heart and a soul. Having an entire crowd of moaners is detrimental to that. Many people, me included, go to football because we enjoy the atmosphere, the tribal nature of fandom that is something missing from modern life. We can sing our hearts out and shout in public without being looked at weirdly because we're there to support our team along with 6k+ like minded souls. A football club doesn't just need money. It needs people who love it enough to make a little bit of a tit out of themselves for it. Otherwise it loses its soul and character and becomes another faceless organisation. |
