Title: Nile Ranger
Post by: JoeMezz on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, 22:53:53
Thought I'd start a new thread... after hearing Cooper's interview, convinced he wasn't 'rested,' as Cooper said. Anyone got any ideas?

I thought it was quite interesting that they cut that question out of the video that is on line on the Adver site. Am interested to see if it ever sees the light of day, as I would like to see Cooper's facial expression when he answered the question.

Obviously something has gone on and Ranger has been dropped because of it. Let's hope that the 'something' is minor and repairable, as I think we are a better team with rather than without him. Having said that, he's not irreplaceable.

I haven't heard Cooper's interview but it doesn't sound positive. I notice that NR has tweeted more recently. Last one was that 'God is real'.

Even if there is something in it, going two months without being a twat is still Ranger's highscore.

After hearing Cooper's interview after the game, that pause spoke volumes to me.

I too wanted to see Cooper's facial expression in the video but it's been chopped off the end.

If you hear the interview, the question, the massive pause and the curt answer you will think it even less positive. Although Cooper does sometime pause for long periods and then jump back to life with a surprised look on his face - That's why I'd like to see the video.

It certainly showed last night that he is a valuable asset, no real outball to the forwards that stuck, it does with Ranger and he brings others into play.  Without him we were very tippy tappy around the box, nobody prepared to take it on.

A reluctance to put crosses straight in as well. His absence certainly showed.

There's almost certainly something going on here.

People putting two and two together.

Cooper always pauses, he takes forever to answer some questions. He also said, with regards to Ajose, he wanted more from all the strikers. So it's not unplausable to say Ranger was dropped. Doesn't have to be anything sinister in it at all, players get dropped all the time.

Need to stop taking things for granted

Sounds like something is not right with him at the moment, could be the court case and all that piling the pressure on, but it could also be something going on at the club.   2 + 2 could =5 with this but then again it could =4 for once.

Maybe with it being JPT, he was just given some time away from the club, especially if he has a lot on his plate. He's played a lot of football recently, and put in a lot of effort too in the lone striker role, being kicked and elbowed all over the park... he deserves a rest.

Or he's fucked up.

Simply because I haven't seen anyone else post it, he's been a good player for us, has behaved himself well so far (as far as we know), and really acquitted himself.

Let's hope this is nothing, but if it is something, ta Nile, you've shown you're capable of being a decent player and keeping off-pitch antics from being a problem.

Don't let anyone say I'm in Denile either.

I think we're better for having Nile in the team, and he'd be a big miss if something has gone on...jumping ahead to January, if he is back in the fold (and we don't know either way yet), I feel if he's found guilty then he'd be an even bigger miss! Who knows though, I'll await the team news on Saturday to see if he was just genuinely rested.

I don't want to stoke rumours, but I think the combination of NR's gnomic tweets, Cooper's discomfort in the press conference and Sam's conviction that he was dropped rather than rested means that we do appear to have a first confirmed sighting of a Ranger wheel coming off. His last post might indicate that he's trying to fix it on again, so as others have said, I think the measure will be whether he's back on the pitch on Sat.

Anyone with a rape case overhanging them is at some point going to have issues,if the law sees it fit that he is guilty then you only have to look at the Ched Evans episode to see what potentially lays ahead for the man...this no doubt will have an effect on him without doubt in my view.
That said he has been brilliant for us on the pitch this season...worked his balls off and got stuck in.

Didn't he have a crash a couple of weeks ago and say he was hit by a drink driver or something, think his car was at Stratstone in Cheltenham last week when I picked my car up. Didn't check the plate but can't imagine many people having a black and white vinyl wrapped Range Rover Sport.

If there weren't, then somebody needs shooting. It was always going to be a monumental gamble taking him on given his numerous instances of off pitch stupidity.

The guy obviously has issues, be it genuine mental issues or something else. Even Christian Roberts turned up for training in his darkest days AFAIK. Ain't worth trying to understand "why" he is like he is....

All said, I'll wait and worry when the club say its over for him here. Ain't looking good though.

It's perception. It must influence every jury member to ever sit in court. It's human nature. If I was on trial for such a crime, I'd try to conduct myself as immaculately as possible, innocent or not.

Disagree Sam. I think you do a good job myself and the Sports offering in the Adver is more than reasonable.

I do found the Adver's desperation for 'exclusives' most amusing however - all a bit too much 'Sky Sources' like for myself - did you not poke fun at them in a recent article?  The BBC seem to have the more reliable 'source' at SN1 that is for sure.

I mean, come on, we had a story about Swindon looking to sign Clayton Donaldson not so long ago.  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Ranger has been instrumental in helping the team impose, at least sometimes, its own style of play and has behaved with dignity on the pitch for 3 months or so.

However the story now develops, I hope that both parties will already have benefited and that STFC has a watertight contract.  If we get more than 3 months then that would be even better.

What a waste of talent. If he can't be bothered at Newcastle, and then can't be bothered when he's in a first team scoring goals for the first time, it obviously isn't the career for him (if he stays out of jail). He's had the chance for the penny to drop on a number of occasions, so I'd question anyone who thinks he'll change now. This was his last chance.

I don't think any of us know the full facts here.  It's going to be a messy situation, one way or another.  Whether innocent or guilty of the rape charge, the impending trial is going to be messing with Ranger's head and - not being an expert in these things - I cannot imagine how someone would react to that.

It might just be that he needs to take some time out from everything until the trial.  He could be suffering massive levels of stress or even depression, for all we know.  Too many jumping to conclusions on here for my liking.  You might be right, or you might not be.  Only time will tell.

Yes & no.  I don't doubt that Ranger being a dick may be a part of the problem.  But there is every chance that there's a lot more to it than that.  It's possible (only possible, I know) that he is being unfairly maligned on here and elsewhere.  Understandable, given his track record - but possibly unfair all the same.  And if he is genuinely not at fault here, I can't think of a quicker way to alienate him than have a lot of baseless accusations flying around from the fans.

And as poor as he was, whenever I think of Dossevi I always go to that Bournemouth away game where literally everything went against him. Finally scored a perfectly legit game and the ref brought it back. Possibly one of the worst refereeing displays I have ever seen that night!

Sorry, got the wrong end of the stick. It did feel like a landmark moment when we signed him though, a statement that the club was being run very differently now.

I'd imagine Paolo would have been okay with computer game tournaments, as long as they had all done their homework first(!) and were sat with their feet up. Better than spending all afternoon in the pub/bookies.

I disagree, it was always a massive risk to sign him.

We won't know whether it was worth the risk until we
   a) Know if he is still part of our plans/not a rapist
   b) if he's out the picture, whether we can get an adequate replacement in
   c) whether it causes a slide in form

Club statement

Quote
SWINDON Town Football Club have this afternoon released a statement regarding striker Nile Ranger.

The former Newcastle forward is understood to have missed a number of training sessions over the course of the last month, coinciding with his preparations for his upcoming rape trial - a charge he has denied.

The club have now granted him leave to 'address his legal situation' but it remains unclear how long he will be away from the club.

The statement read: "Nile Ranger has been permitted time off to address his legal situation on matters publically disclosed prior to his joining the Club.

"During the time Nile has been with Swindon Town, he has been a hard-working and respectful member of the squad and has respected the club’s policy and supporters. He has given 100% every time he has stepped on to the pitch in the colours of STFC.

"The Club will be meeting Nile’s representatives early next week to get an update on his legal situation and to review where we are in what is a difficult time for Nile and his family."

Agree,  and his attitude on the pitch has appeared excellent, really not what I was expecting. Very disciplined when wound up by the opposition.

We wouldn't find another player of his quality cheaply, that is for sure.

Hopefully he can get the trial out of the way and we move forward.

Sounds like damage limitation to me.  It leaves the door open for Ranger to return, which I guess is the point.

If he had been given the time off, I suspect Cooper would have known this when asked about Ranger's absence on Tuesday.

From my distant view it seems like both. Given time off, missed return, clearly head in the wrong place so given more time off so that a bad situation isn't made any worse.

I was thinking the same.  You would assume that as the trial approaches, there will be a need for him to spend more and more time with his legal team and I very much doubt he would be in the right frame of mind to put in a decent shift on a football pitch.

I think there's a strong possibility we might not see him again (dependant on the outcome of the court case). I wasn't keen when he was signed, but he's done a good job and we may struggle without him.

It's a no win situation for Town. If found guilty he gets sent down and we lose a player.  Found not guilty then expect to see a load of other clubs interested in his services.

Look at the bigger picture:
- If he gets sent down we have had a player (for free) that has contributed significantly in the first part of the season, leading the line, scoring goals and helping us to the top half of the table
- If he doesn't and other teams sniff around, be would be entitled to a fee. So the club would make money on the deal.

Perhaps he went to Switzerland to clear the air with Lee. If that bollocks is to be believed.

Or he went to Greece to clear the air with Diamond Mike?

Good news, bolsters the attacking options again! Can't see how we can drop Ajose or N'Guessan though after their performances against Wycombe and Colchester, and expect him to be on the bench Saturday!

Cant see us playing the ghost striker at home
N'Guessan did ok Colchester but is no hold up player like Ranger
Ajose deffo deserves his place
Ranger or N'Guessan is the choice to be made I think

Fucking hell, remember the outrage when Hart played one up front, a 'zero up front' system at home would really have some of our fans on the edge.

If Ranger is fit and in a correct state of mind to play then I hope he starts as we are far better with him in the side.

I expect Bournemouth would sign him then.

Personally I don't think it is right to speculate on that very sensitive issue at this time, when we actually know nothing except what the press tell us.

But i stick with the principle that no-one is beyond redemption, and in the right circumstances, offering fresh chances is the best way towards rehabilitation.

I would be a bit uncomfortable tbh. Big difference between being accused of rape and being convicted of rape.

Agreed. But if found guilty I'd rather not pay for a rapists wage, however little it is.

If found guilty, we won't be paying him any wages.

It was in answer to the ' would you take him back when out on parole' question.

If Muamer Gaddafi was a good footballer (and alive), I would happily have him in our team.

Gaddafi was good for Libya until the last few years, the people were very well off by African standards.

I don't think it's fair to say the Germans were 'very well off' under Hitler. Better off than they were when he took over, but that wasn't hard, as he inherited a shite state of affairs.
