Title: Anybody been to Krakow or Warsaw?
Post by: Crispy on Thursday, October 17, 2013, 14:15:49
Want to go abroad and watch some more Fooootball, been told Czech is cheap and the standard is good - that was literally the criteria, if anybody has any other ideas let me know.

Looking at Plzen & Prague at the moment, but was also thinking of Poland, thinking of Wisla Krakow or Lech Poznan

Decided on Poland, the question is now - Krawkow or Warsaw?

Wisla Krakow is immense. Never experienced a game like it. You have to register at the ground to be able to get tickets first. So go to the ground before the game. Some of our lads bought a scarf but were told not to wear it on a non match day otherwise you will get yourself into trouble.

The game itself wasn't a very good standard but the atmosphere was electric. Non stop singing. We did the poznan, with our shirts off. Went to a krakow underground bar before the game.

This is what a need, thanks Sippo.

Can you register on a match day? Is it worth sorting tickets/Registering online before we get there? Or could it be done on match day or the day before? (Won't be a derby game) And is beer really 50p a pint?!

Whats are the hotel locations like? Get what you pay for I guess, and, is the nightlife any good? Are they anti-english at all? Or just if you go out there and be a penis?

I'm not a scarf man myself so shouldn't be a problem.

Went to Prague in the summer. Didn't see any football, but it's a good city. Went to Plzen for a day whilst out there. Very quaint little town, quieter than prague. The football ground is right next to the brewer where pilsner was invented (i think).

Didn't see any football, but the hostel I stayed at was less than 5 minutes away from Viktoria Zizkov's home ground, which was pretty quaint.

Crispy,

If there are a few of you, stay here http://www.cracowsuites.com. Cheap, friendly, good location and you can all get in one room. Think some sleep 6.

Krakow is a beautiful city. Yes it's full of stag do's, but if your cause trouble or go looking for it you will get it. Get drunk. Yes. But get drunk and lairy, and you'll find yourself in trouble. The polish in General are friendly. Have a beer in the main square but I'd recommend getting off the beaten track and find a local bar. Spend money in there and the locals will sort you out. There is one bar that shows premier league games with a draught handle on each table. You buy the keg and pull your own beer. Beer is cheap. Couple of Irish bars aswell. Vodka is so pure out there. No one drinks Smirnoff. But of you have a bottle of their local stuff, for example Bison, you won't get a hangover.

As for the football. You need to go to the ground before the game to register. You'll need your passport, and register at a cost of £2! Tickets are approx £6. We sat in stand C which is with the ultra's. Then on match day you only need your ID card and no passport. Go to the burn bar after you've registered and before the game. It's small, dingy, smelly but bloody awesome and cheap! The atmosphere in the ground is so surreal. God knows what we were singing but it was mental. People say racism is rife but we had two Asian lads with us and they got no grief whatsoever. Just be aware of the Black smoke and red flairs. Krakow are flying at the moment. Cracovia are in their league this year so avoid that game. They absolutely hate each other.

The ground is a far way from the centre but they have bike taxis which are dirt cheap- just make sure you arrange a price first. Tip well and they will come get you. It is walkable but takes about 30 mins.

Anything else you want to know let me know.

Was smack bang in the middle of a sold out Block 42 thanks to a F95 ultra I know through a friend for the Fortuna vs. Dynamo game,

You didn't stay at the Clown and Bard did you? Just round the corner from Zizkov's ground. I went to see a Zizkov match back in '97 when I was in Praha for 3 months, what a great summer that was.

Can recommend Praha.
Spent 6 days there a while back (working) ::)
Prices did vary ,presuming they still use the Koruna, you should be able to get a large beer for roughly 30p and a decent meal for £3.Like any major city,it depends on what area you are in.
Must admit to making a bit of a twat of myself during my stay.
Spotted what i thought was a football stadium across the river and after walking half a mile West, crossing a bridge and walking half a mile East to take a pic . . it turned out to be a tennis stadium :-[

What's with all the correct pronunciation of a place name in its own language? Very un-English like.

Back in 97, two doors down from the Clown and Bard you could get beer from the offy for 13p. Best of all when you took the empty bottles back you used to get 6p per bottle, so buy a crate, drink it, take the crate back, and buy more beer with the deposit money.  Loved the place back then, old town square, Karlov Most, JJ's, The Chapeau Rouge, Praha Sports Bar (which closed in 98 I think).

That does look very good.

Friend of mine has told me Legia Warsaw ultras are better, and that's mainly what we go for. So will have a look at them before we book up!

I worked in Krakow for a few years. It's beautiful adn full of stuff to do / see and plenty of bars, cafes and clubs.. something for everyone and not yet spoilt by tourism, although going that way... Warsaw I don't know as well, just a few days trips. The old town is good (rebuilt replica after being bombed in the war), the place is much more industrial with some of it's Russian architectural influences but is probably better for shopping if that's what you're into :-)
