Title: Sky broadband Post by: kerry red on Sunday, May 19, 2013, 19:36:21 Are Sky taking the piss?
I tested by broadband speed and it showed less than 1 MHz, much lower than the advertised 6 or so and that was what I got when I first signed up After calling them to complain, low and behold, after being put on hold for 5 mins I was told they had fixed it and my speed indeed did return to 6 being a cynical twat it occurs to me that they purposely slow down your speed over time so they can accommodate more users and hope nobody notices Title: Re: Sky broadband Post by: Batch on Sunday, May 19, 2013, 19:47:41 Its more likely that there was a line condition that forced the rate down permanently. They usually clear if the line improves, but sometimes get 'stuck'.
Just make sure if its ADSL that every used phone socket has a filter on it and keep an eye out. There, resisted the MHz correction. Did you do the test hard wired or wireless, I'm on virgin, should be 60 MB i get, wired 50MB plus, wireless 25MBto 35MBI tested by broadband speed and it showed less than 1 MHz, much lower than the advertised 6 or so and that was what I got when I first signed up After calling them to complain, low and behold, after being put on hold for 5 mins I was told they had fixed it and my speed indeed did return to 6 being a cynical twat it occurs to me that they purposely slow down your speed over time so they can accommodate more users and hope nobody notices Had them out loads of times, but they always use the wireless excuse Title: Re: Sky broadband Post by: jonny72 on Sunday, May 19, 2013, 20:30:49 Did you do the test hard wired or wireless, I'm on virgin, should be 60 MB i get, wired 50MB plus, wireless 25MBto 35MB Had them out loads of times, but they always use the wireless excuse If you're using Wifi G then those figures are in the right ballpark. Even if you've got Wifi N, chances are if you've got any devices that don't support it then it will fallback to run Wifi G instead. Also depends on how you're measuring the speed, if you're looking at actual data rates (ie excluding network overhead) then 50Mb is about right. You have to forgive my old man grasp of technology - or lack thereof Title: Re: Sky broadband Post by: jutty274 on Sunday, May 19, 2013, 21:40:18 Did you do the test hard wired or wireless, I'm on virgin, should be 60 MB i get, wired 50MB plus, wireless 25MBto 35MB What virgin don't tell you is that to get the top speed you have to have a computer that works at the higher frequency of 5ghzHad them out loads of times, but they always use the wireless excuse |
