To be fair, so far nothings been confirmed about the source. It may have been something as simple as a faulty gas line.

Though even as I type those words it seems hard to believe

The Boston Police are apparently going to be conducting a controlled explosion soon.

I know a few people who may well have been there today, have yet to hear from them but I really hope they're alright.

The official Boston FB/twitter called them "bombs"

Quote
“There were two bombs that exploded near the finish line in today’s Boston Marathon,” the statement read. “We are working with law enforcement to understand what exactly has happened.”

Extremely unlikely, especially as it's being reported that other devices have been found that didn't go off

This stuff happens in Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis and no one cares. Just because it's America doesn't warrant the massive outpourings of grief from everyone, 36 people were killed in bomb attacks in Iraq today, did it even make the news?

Quiet. You're upsetting my right to be white, morally outraged, and somewhat racist to a degree generally tolerated by society in the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack.

I forget what program it was on where they said, as far as the media is concerned, 1 death in England is worth 10 in Europe is worth 100 in the rest of the world.  Strangely, the USA seems to count towards the England end of the scale.

All pretty awful of course.

That seems to be right. I'd say for our media it goes 1 death in the UK, 2 in America, 10 in Europe, 100 the rest of the world. For America it's 1 death in America, 10 in the UK (Europe), 100000000000000000000 rest of the world. Iraq/Afghanistan - it didn't even happen.

Yeah Visočan, can you make sure you make such relevant points at a time when this kind of thing isn't happening please. Perhaps during the Ashes Series, 4th test would be good.

Atrocities in westernised countries are bigger news than in the Iraq’s and Afghan’s of the world.

I expect terrorist attacks in those countries every now and again, when it happens you are almost used to hearing that sort of news so the effect upon hearing it is minimized.  When something like yesterday happens in a westernised country it’s unexpected so it’s quite rightly massive news.

Not saying its right, every life is equal but it’s the way it is.

I didn't offer anything informative because I don't know, like everyone else. Oklahoma City is an excellent example where reports only hours after the bombing of "brown-skinned Arabs" being involved turned out to be nothing of the sort.

Speculation at the moment is exactly that, which was my point...

Even BBC radio had a rent-a-quote ex-CIA guy on earlier saying it "could" have been Islamic extremists. In the same way it "could" have been the girl guides or the WI. Until more is known, I'd rather ignore the speculation.

I find it interesting and curious that instead of investigating this idea to determine if there's any truth to it, the media attacked it unquestioningly, even saying they're insulted by it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARE9rclZCqw&feature=player_embedded

“He was controlled by the FBI, like for three, five years,” she told Russia Today during an interview. ”They knew what my son was doing, they knew what actions and what sites on the Internet he was going [to], they used to come…and talk to me…they were telling me that he was really a serious leader and they were afraid of him.”

“How could this happen?…They were controlling every step of him, and they are telling today that this is a terrorist attack,” she added."

Whilst it's fun to get all 'STATE IS OUT TO GET YOU', I'd like to derail you befor eyou start posting David Icke Dossy. There's not a scrap of evidence to support her theories (which, I may add, are coming from the other side of the world to where the investigation is happening). She sounds like a mother who is angry, and I suppose must feel, probably slightly guilty over the whole situation. How many times have you heard 'My son/wife/husband could never do something like this?' Not wanting to believe someone that close to you was capable of such an action is a perfectly natural feeling. She wants to blame someone, and the FBI/American Government is an easy target.

I do want to know which foreign government his elder brother was on the radar of that made the FBI look into him all that time ago though.

Very fair point Honkytonk, though in addition to what their own mother has said,  I do find it all rather strange that those that knew the two brothers- people residing on their street, those they went to college amongst, and with whom they attended swimming/wrestling groups - have all expressed total incredulity that the pair could be involved in any action born of fanaticism.

But as you well say, if they were intent on such an extreme measure it would hardly propel the plot into actuality if they crackled with hatred infront of everyone they encountered from day-day, so it was neccassary to put on some mild mannered front.

Also their uncle, who lived close to them, practically called them nutjobs.

Seems to me the older brother in particular was dissappointed with life in the states, this spread to his younger brother (seems that they lived together, with no close family other than themselves), then they decided to look into ways of hitting back at the country they felt was a lie, culminating in them bombing their local city on Patriots Day.

The younger brother seems the sadder case here. From the impressions I've got, he was the meeker/more corruptable one of the two. He seemed to be on the up and up within school etc., but unfortunately his elder brother turned him. Maybe he was never truly radicalised, but felt that between his loyalty to his brother and that he seemed to have few/no friends, he was an outcast, and this was a way of getting some attention. If nothing else, the low body count of what could have been a truly awful attack shows the brothers were either ill-equipped/prepared, or there was a problem with their nerves.

I think the Islamic community in the states has breathed a sigh of relief too- the whole 'Balkan/Russian terrorist' thing is the main story, not the fact they were muslim. That horse was beaten to death long ago.

I saw a picture of the younger brother at the marathon saying that he left the bag at the finish line, but in another paper a picture showed him walking away after the bombs went off but he was still holding his bag on his back, i thought that was abit strange but surely someone else had noticed that.
