They're trying to extract concessions (dropped sanctions, aid etc) through military provocation. It can't be seen to work, and is only currently holding because China publicly support them. The Chinese are very clearly going off them fast though, so I think young Kim might be wise to row back a little.

The Americans should nuke themselves a little bit to show the North Koreans how hard they are.

PS some of us were around during the last Korean War...if it hadn't been for M*A*S*H, think it would have been largely forgotten.

The usual twaddle we've seen many times before, the only concern I guess is that the inexperience of fat boy Kim means he backs himself into a corner without a face-saving exit.

I highly doubt Kim has very much to do with any of their actions, other than being a figurehead. Someone educated in Switzerland must surely know how badly this will end for Best Korea?

Kim Jong Un is such a little puppet I'm surprised you can't see the strings. His generals have him jerking around like nobody's business. I don't think he's happy about this, and is attempting to look impressive in front of his people. It stinks of a medieval prince attempting to show his barons he is not to be messed with, it really does.

It's all bluff and bluster to try and get sanctions dropped, raise tension in the region, and show off to his people. The musudan rocket they've reportedly moved to the coast is a fantastic case in point. If you were really serious, you wouldn't mobilise one rocket. Least of all one that doesn't even have the range to hit American bases in Guam- and an attack on Japan would just bring NATO/the UN down on them like a ton of bricks.

It's all about domestic problems, very little to do with the outside world. I mean, the North would like very much to invade the South, but as China would condemn such an action, the South Korean army is in an extremely high state of readiness and is much better equipped, and the Americans are poised ready to support the South, I doubt very much they're that stupid.

If there was Oil in N.Korea we'd have followed the Yanks in there ages ago.

NK might have a huge military but they have no infrastructure. Unless they're planning on marching to Washington D.C. I'd go so far as to suggest nothing will ever happen ever.

Whilst I appreciate the seriousness of the situation, am I the only one that bursts out laughing every time they show clips from the news channels in North Korea? People crying when they see Lil Kim. Soldiers marching in a style copied from the Ministry of Silly Walks. The stern and proud newsreaders. And so on.

Apparently they've got no more than 6 nuclear warheads but no reliable missile delivery system.

Yep. They're essentially using mid/late soviet-era technology in their launchers, except produced/maintained in a country with little to no industrial base/electronic/ballistic missile expertise, and so any missile with a range over 750-1000 miles either has an unacceptable failure rate or hasn't been tested at all yet. Not only that, but by modern standards, the missiles are dead slow, and easy (by modern standards) to intercept as they use a low trajectory, and with the amount of Aegis that's been deployed to the pacific I would be VERY surprised if, even if they did launch, there wouldn't be about 300 interceptor missiles chasing after it within seconds. They're not even multiple warhead...

And 6 is I think a generous number. I remember in my research for my dissertation last year I came across a believable article that says they definitelyhave 3 ex-soviet warheads, and possibly one or two 'home-grown' ones. Can't be arsed to find it now, so I'll just say FACT! and leave it at that.
