Someone, somewhere is always predicting the end of the world.  This year it's the turn of the Mayans.  Last year it was a Christian fundamentalist called Harold Camping who was widely reported as predicting the Rapture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_end_times_prediction), which would take place on October 21st, 2011.

Needless to say, it didn't.  Here's the best bit from the link:

Anyone foolish enough to try to predict the end of the world is always going to be on a loser. If they are wrong they end up looking a prat. If they are right nobody would be around to boast to about it anyway.
