A scrappy game & performance... But Colchester will succumb to the irresistable force that is Andy Williams.
2-0 Swindon (Williams x2)

Also, Michael Rose can go fuck himself. Tosser.

Can someone remind me of why Rose is so hated? Obviously he was a very third rate defender. His attitude wasn't the best but that went for at least half our team that season.

I think the fact he blamed the fans for douglas getting bottled might have something to do with it aswell

3-0, Williams 2 and I'm hoping Collins get on the score sheet. If they play 4-3-3 like Saturday we will rip them apart with the space they will leave. Their keeper is also doubtful hence my 3-0 prediction.

Sorry if it has already been discussed but was Bostock injured? He has barely been involved since we have loaned him.

Pretty sure he's been fit, he's just very awkward to accommodate. Extremely talented footballer, but between a rock and a hard place in that, due to the hard work of our forwards we're in a situation where 4-5-1 with Bostock behind the striker seems somehow both less defensive and less attacking than our usual 4-4-2, because in Williams and Collins we have 2 strikers that probably have as much a defensive impact chasing down the defenders and goalkeeper and forcing them into errors as the rest of our midfield, and then we also have two strikers on the pitch to put the ball in the net when we've won it  back. If you are going to play him, it is always going to have to be either in the place of a striker, which seems less attacking, or on the wing, where he's out of position and where we have quality anyway. Having said all that, after feeling so excited when i found out we'd signed him, it seems a total waste not to see him play. In the brief glimpse when he came on against Oxford he looked by far the best player on the field (without much competition admittedly).

In terms of the game tonight, i really think this is going to be much tougher than come people are predicting. Their loan signings are quality, one of our strikers will need to hunt down Craig Eastmond to stop him getting on the ball and dictating play from centre mid, sanchez watt is quick and tricky on the wing (hope thompson is back tonight), and Ibehre scored two last week. Added to some already decent players in that squad, new manager and enthusiasm, if Swindon aren't on their game tonight we'll be punished. However, 4-4-3 suits us to play against, so if we get it down the wings to Ritchie and Roberts and deliver to Willo +1 we should be able to get goals.

On the Col U forums they are very confident in beating us as they think they have turned the corner this season.

They are basing a lot of their own confidence on our over confidence and almost all of them are moaning about the cost to get in, now that makes a refreshing change doesn't it.

Doesn't make a lot of difference they never bring more than about 150 to a game at the CG anyway, they have one of the poorest away followings in this league, I would be surprised if we get much over 7,100 tonight.

They come from all over the place - not just Ireland.

It is, though, mega sugary nonsense.

However, 2 years ago one of my dogs won a decent race at Tralee and the presentation incuded the recently crowned Rose - and I got a good tit rub when we had to squeeze up for the photo.

As a condition of being allowed back in to the County Ground, Rose should be ordered to hang a sign around his neck for the duration of the game.  'STFC Class of 2010/11 - The Bottlers'.

We knew he had a history of injuries, in addition to the Douglas-inflicted broken arm. He has only been available for 5 games. Hopefully this won't be a trend this season as his width is vital given that Ritchie cuts inside on the other flank.

The most impressive disturbing example of male multi-tasking I ever witnessed was at school many years ago.  I opened the door to a toilet cubicle to find the occupant - who had forgotten to lock the door - taking a crap, reading a copy of the Sun, smoking a fag and having a wank...all at the same time.  Sadly, this painful imagine has been burned in to my memory banks and won't budge, even after all this time.

Well that was on a par with the Leyton Orient game - absolute dogshit.

And the goal had to come from Rose, who acted like a complete twat for the rest of the game attempting to goad the Town End.  Pathetic wall though.

We could play until midnight and would still be hitting it long to nobody in particular.

Appreciate changes being made through injury, but PDC needs to settle on his first 11.

- Gave a lot of balls away
- Didn't pass quick enough
- Didnt apply the way they have done (both on and off the ball)
- They made us be poor
- They became more and more confident
- Not nice losing at home
- Last year is last year and its a higher standard this year. We have to up our game.
- We have to work hard. We didnt start well and didnt finish well
- Team called in to watch game tomorrow morning

Just back - only one word, DIRE!  No passion, no commitment, no nothing.  Didn't deserve anything, only two shots (tame) on target.  Nobody to blame, the whole team were poor, Bassone pathetic.  MCcevely couldn't cross a road tonight, had to be reminded Ritchie was actually playing, won't go on, but we were awful.

Much worse than Orient. Orient were just as shit as us that night, but Colchester completely dominated us. The problem is that our players can't lift themselves to play the smaller teams in this league, and there's lots of them in this league! I can see Bury getting their first win on Saturday.

Against Burnley, we had two players straight on their player as soon as they had the ball. Tonight we couldn't win any headers or tackles, just half hearted fannying around. No passion, no effort. Every player was bad tonight but Bessone, Miller and particularly Navarro were dreadful.

I'm sure we'll stuff Coventry out of sight, as our players will be up for that one.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Colchester Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 21:17:43
Miller:
- No passion, no fight and we created nothing
- Colchester made it difficult
- Consistency is a problem for all teams in this league
- We've got carried away with recent results
- PDC is disappointed as the players are
- Need to learn from the videos and put things right on saturday
- No easy games. If not mentally right then you get nothing out of the game

That was worse than Orient. The only players who can come out with any credit are Williams and McCormack but even that is stretching it.

For me, the main issue was the complete lack of options we had bringing the ball out from the back. Henville was brought in for his supposed ability to play the ball out but time and again he’d get the ball, have nothing at all on, and hoof it. Navarro and Miller were anonymous and must take a share of the blame. They should have given an option. Miller can't have touched the ball more than 20 times in match. Navarro did, and was very wasteful.

Complete and utter shite but I think we've got to give credit to Colchester here. They didn't give us a second on the ball and chased and harried for everything. They also appeared fitter than us and were certainly more up for it. Our midfield were absolute wank and ferry made no dofference to it. This meant we needed  good distribution from the back that was totally lacking - both Archie and Bessone's distributions were not worthy of professional football. McEvely couldn't beat the front man which left macca who was probably MOM but by default by being less shit than the others.
Up front their two centre backs had our forwards in their pockets. I'd take their no 4 - he was superb all game.
All in all a fucking shit evening but credit where its due, col U had done their hoework, they worked hard and they go a break due to what seemed to me to be a completely fucking useless wall.

Complete crap topped off by Rose scoring and taking the piss.

The more I see of Collins the more I think that Shrewsbury have shafted us. Very worrying.

You would think that a 200k player at this level would be able to pass a football, wouldn't you? Sadly not in Troys case.

If Roberts is going to miss matches then we need to sign a left winger on loan to cover. De Vita should have been shipped out in the summer along with some of the others deemed not upto this level of football.

Is it just me or are Benson, Collins and Rooney all near identical strikers? It was crying out for a spark up front tonight to get behind them.

I can see Bostock starting Saturday and rightly so. Very frustrating evening but we will soon be back on track I am sure.

That was possibly the worst game I've seen under Paolo (I was on holiday for Orient).

 - Long ball wasn't working, and was obvious from the very outset, yet the tactics remained the same.
 - On this note, Troy played a cracking through ball to Williams (along the floor) that almost set up a chance in the first few minutes... from this point onwards, he assumed what appeared to be his sole role of the player of aimless lofty hoofs. The tactics appeared to be Macca to Troy, then straight up to Benson via the now redundant Lyneham flight path.
 - Navarro was shite. The very fery few times we gave the ball to our midfield, he wasted it.
 - We never utilised Ritchie, which is criminal seeing as he only had Rose for company all night. He wasn't double marked, but never got the ball. This is down to Bessone being rubbish, and our CM's not getting the ball to him.
 - We came off second best in all 50/50 challenges except when Jay took out the corner flag.
 - Our set pieces were shocking. I had to leave before the final whistle having seen yet another poorly thought out and shittly executed short corner hit the first man yet again. We should have corners and free-kicks nailed by now.
 - The goal: was the wall in the wrong place, or did it just split/jump over the shot, my angle wasn't great? Still, it didn't look like a 'worldy' strike.

I seriously would rather have watched the Great British Bake Off than that utter shite out there this evening, it's left me pretty annoyed.

That was fucking shocking, definately on par with and IMO worse than Leyton Orient. I don't expect us to win every game (even if it would be nice) but we could show some fight! The majority of teams we play and are winning 1-0 against will normally always pin us in and make us defend for our lives and earn the win, yet with us that never seems to be the case. Every player was poor tonight and the hoofball should have been cut out after 10 minutes. They had 1 6.6 centre back who was winning everything. Why oh why can John Bostock not get a game, wouldn't be surprised if more changes are made ahead of Bury (if on) and hopefully Roberts/Thompson will both be back!

As for Rose, 1 word...CUNT!

Awful display from us tonight. Colchester played more football than we did. I have no idea why we insisted on lumping it up top all game against a team full of 6 footers. When we tried to pass it we couldnt execute it properly. So many players had bad games tonight. Ritchie never really had much of a chance to get into the game, Navarro had the touch of a rapist and couldnt pass it for shit, Troy enjoyed a cameo performance to rival the Peter Kay John Smiths advert "avvvv it".

Colchester played for a point and packed the midfield but took the chance when we gifted them the free kick. They didnt really impress. The only positive i can take from tonight is that we will not play that badly again this season.

PDC:
- Not even angry
- Would have liked the game cancelled as he could see that the players had turned off after recent results
- No passion. No desire
- He could have changed 7 players as it was a poor performance across the team
- Lots and lots of meaningless waffle saying that we were crap and have to learn lessons from this and try to improve
- He wasn't surprised, but he can't keep changing 7-8 players each week when across the team there seems to be a lack of desire (from context)
- Loads more waffle which was about it being easy for players at this level to lift level of performance against Premiership teams, but not against teams near bottom of the league.
- Mentioned Ritchie having a poor game and being only average at this level when showing this level of desire
- Need to check on Thompson and Roberts injuries in next couple of days

He mumbled so much tonight that I couldnt get everything

I'm going to give the opposition some credit, sure they were devoid of any footballing ability (not that we had any tonight), but they did press us reasonably well.

What was disappointing was that we didn't even try to pass the ball tonight. Actually we did, from the back line to the front two. And back it came. Time and time again. I've been quite impressed with Archibald-Henville thus far. But tonight he was absolutely dogshit with the ball, lump it forward at every opportunity, a bit like Ifil only the ball generally found a defenders head rather than touch. Strangely I thought he has looked quite assured on the ball in previous games so fuck knows what happened there.

Navarro was crap too. Couldn't pass for shit.

Ritchie was average, and while Bassawhatsit looked really solid, his style of play was not as mobile as Thompson and I think this didn't help.

Didn't agree with PDCs analysis. I thought the back 4 weren't great - kept bypassing midfield and giving the top 2 nothing.

Not sure if, as PDC said, Wes got his wall wrong. Anyone shed any light?

In summary the game was of such low quality Michael Rose looked competent. 7

Grrrrr. So frustrating. But its only 1 loss. As long as it doesn't become habit to play like that.

Hopefully the Bury/Cov/Villa scouts were watching and have pissed themselves all the way home with a recommendation to play the ladies 3rd 11.

PDC did say that Wes cocked up his wall. When a left footer like Rose is standing over the ball, one of the posts has to be covered by the wall so the keeper can cover the other. Wes is responsible for setting up the wall and got it wrong I think. Wasn't a worldie strike by any means.

I couldn't tell if it went through the wall or round the wall.

I could :gay:n't tell if it went through the wall or round the wall.

It went round the wall, because the wall wasn't far enough to the left.  As soon as Rose went to hit it, we said it was going into the bottom corner, because of the gap at the side of the wall and it did.

The free kick was as a result of Archibald Henville hitting the ball straight to a Colchester player and then a melee in which a handball was given against Bessone.  Just about summed tonight up.

Wow...didn't see that coming.
Very poor all round.....Ritchie and Williams were poor and should get the same treatment as others in the squad.......De Vita was as good as both and got hauled of.
Anyhow fair play to Colchester they dug deep.
We play far to deep at home....our wingers may well have been playing right and left back.
Onwards now.......it is a tough league and we will come good...nice to see PDC face the crowd in defeat.
Roll on Bury.

Pretty well summed up already on here, the frustrating part is we have now lost two home games against teams we should be taking points off. I know it's not god given but our home form will be the difference in achieving our aim this season so I'm really hoping this was just a shit night we can put behind us. Its not as if it happened just a few weeks ago :headhurts:

Pants.

Di Canio has to take a share of the blame for tonight, Bessone at right back unbalances the team as he is pretty much unable to kick the ball with his right foot (slight problem). He was crap but felt sorry for him at times.

Troy's distribution was horrific.

Would like to see a midfield 4 of Roberts, Miller, Ferry, Ritchie with Bostock playing off of Williams.

Thompson has been very good but as he is injured I would of liked to have seen Devera at right back, he was starting to link up well with Ritchie and looked in general pretty solid. Think that's the better option than playing someone out of position who in my oppinion looked uncomfortable tonight. Was Ritchie out for the Orient game? As it seems that when he has an off game or is not playing the whole team looks out of sorts.

One other point of frustration, when there is 4 minutes to go we are 1-0 and the opposition have a corner, can't we take a bit of a gamble and not put 11 men in our own box.

It pisses me off big time whenever we are defending a corner or free kick - the opposition always get two bites at the cherry because we do nothing but hoof the ball up to the half way line where it is gleefully hoofed back!!

As poor a performance from the Town as I have seen in a long time.

The hoofball tactic was rumbled as a BAD IDEA very early but TAH kept trying it- FAIL!

Bessone was too wasteful.

One day (please!) I will see a performance from Navaro that will justify his inclusion in our team. Yesterday was not it.

Raffa was the only midfield player that seemed to offer much of a threat- substituted?

Benno was as much of a scoring prospect as Williams- substituted?

Overall, Macca, Jay, and Williams were OK but not their usual selves.

Ritchie was pretty anonymous but that wasn't necessarily his fault. he didn't get the support he is used to and needs to thrive (a' la Thompson).

With the tactics we employed last night, if we had played with 5 defenders and 5 strikers, we wouldn't have faired any worse so ineffective was our midfield as a unit.

Oh and Rose? You are a cunt.

Troy's distribution was horrific.

His performance was generally Boateng-esque.

This was probably the most disappointing aspect of last night for me, hopefully just a one off because I've been really impressed by him previously.

We were crap all over last night. The team looked very incoherent/disjointed, too much tinkering maybe?

Well it was nights like last night that made me appreciate the good nights. It was woeful at best. I will also give Colchester some credit. They absolutely packed out the midfield, which I fear other teams will do, and caused us to hoof from the back to the front which is not our game at all. I also think it was one of those games where every ball just rebounded to their feet. Hopefully a win at bury will make us forget this defeat soon as.

Blimey... just read a few comments on thisis - always a dangerous way to pass time - and you'd think our season had imploded. A win last night would have put us second. The defeat, though disappointing, leaves us just 3 points off that second spot. Hardly the end of the world.

No, we can't keep playing like last night. Yes, I too am wondering what's going on with Bostock. Yes, of course Thompson was injured. Yes, Paolo probably does chop and change his team too much. But are any of these things really a cause for the reaction akin to a fanbase threatenend with relegation? No.

It was another bad day at the office, thats it, no major problem just a blip.

I am a little concerned that Paolo does not seem to know his best side, or perhaps he does and just wants to keep the players on their toes?

I personally would like to see a settled side with at least 9 regulars in every game but maybe swapping one or two in midfielder/winger/striker but with the bulk of the team, certainly the defence and central midfield staying as a solid unit. This is my only slight concern with PdC in that he does like to tinker with a winning formula/side.

We will have more of these off days in this league because we will be punished more by individual errors/peices of brilliance by the oppo because generally the standard is better in this league.

Certainly no need to panic at all.

Everything has been pretty much covered, but some of fans seem to think that we are guaranteed to win every game 4-0. Yes, it was awful last night, but we are 3 points off the automatics at the start of October, that constitutes a solid start for me.

Agreed, fair play to colchester they came with a plan to frustrate us and hopefully get a point. We were shit but that's because colchester made us play their way, looked like a bunch of pub team players individuals. The longball didn't work, just kept coming back. How that cunt rose didn't get booked for time wasting I'll never know. I think I'm going to stick money on all ex-players coming back to score. I can't think of any positives from last nights game. My personal opinion was that Bessone and TAH were the worst.

I'm now looking forward to the next hopefully it can't get any worse then last night. Its never fucking easy watching the Town, but thats why we all do it.

I'm sure I remember reading something during the close season about Paolo wanting a Plan B, C & D in order to unlock stubborn defences.

Last night summed up the fact that we certainly don't have any other options. I thought maybe Bostock would have provided a different option, but apparently not. No change in formation, just man for man substitutions.

Thats what is most concerning. Lower league teams are figuring out how to stifle us, and we have no answer to that other than hoof.

Its a bit worrying about the comments I have read about resorting to hoofing the ball. This clearly doesn't work as we aren't setup for that style of football. If its easy for the opposition to pack the midfield and stifle our game, Paolo and chums are going to need to work on the plan to counteract this.

I'm fairly confident he will, as I reckon he is meticulous in his study of the opposition and the like. His ideas will take time though I'm sure.

Was going to make a similar point, was just looking at it. We still had 7 shots last night and had 13, 14 and 11 in the previous three league games. More a case of not taking chances on occasion, Collins in particular seems to have had a couple of matches recently where he's hit the woodwork or just missed the target.

A bad day at the office but I don't think symptomatic of any major underlying issues - except maybe that too much chopping and changing isn't always going to work.

I've come to that conclusion after witnessing a very average Colchester side setup to frustrate us, and end up dominating the game because we had no other plan. Everyone around me was saying how similar it was to Orient, another lower league team where we played terribly at home.

Last night was not a game where we didn't take our chances. We had one clear chance all game where Williams shot straight at the keeper after about 7 minutes. That was all.

I'm specifically referring to home games. You'd expect teams on their own patch to play a bit more football, or at least try to score rather than just try stopping us scoring.

Some teams who come here will try to get away with a draw and pray for a lucky break. Thats what Col U did last night, and Orient previously and we had no answer to it.

Presumably this is related to the "Charlie shagged your missus" and "Your wife is a whore" chants aimed at Rose last night.

He got a bit of relatively tame stick at the start of the game, but that soon seemed to taper off  - I reckon a lot of fans got bored with booing him quite quickly. It was nothing compared to what Austin took the week before.

It was only when he scored and obviously gestured towards the town end several times to try and get a rise out of us that the more personal comments above were thrown back at him.

I wonder how the club feel about an ex-player intentionally trying to wind up their most vocal fanbase during a match, I don't imagine he thought we wouldn't react

Agree with most of the match comments on this thread but what concerns me more is that a well organised side that plays "deep" and closes down our main strikers (Richie/Williams/Benson) with such relative ease can cause us so many problems. It may be that we will see far more games at home like this, I hope not but as it seems currently we do not appear to have a plan A1 let alone a plan B. After last seasons stroll at home this early wake up call is a bit hard to take, just trust that PdC and his team can work the oracle again.

The irony hasn't been lost :)

The advertiser will do anything for a story nowadays, like most newspapers it's a load of bollocks.

I wasn't there on Tuesday but I can imagine the celebration. And do you know what, he's got every right to celebrate like that. Football is about give and take and yes, he took a lot and gave very little when he wore Red a couple of seasons back.

I can imagine the abuse he would've been getting for the whole game on Tuesday, and if you take that for 90 mins and then pop one in to silence the crowd who've been calling you and you're wife every name under the sun for an hour an a half, you're entitled to cup your ear and take the pi$$.

That's football and people should get over themselves

Actually, apart from a few half hearted boos every time he touched the ball he didn't get the nasty stuff until he scored.

Austin got much much more attention from the Town End. Disappointing, Rose deserved it more.

Nobody gave a shit when Rose left but we were all gutted when Austin left. Austin is a good player, whereas Rose and Prutton are donkeys.

I expect Doughlas will get a similar reception to Austin, but that's a compliment to his ability!

Quite. Never ceases to amaze me how people think it's OK to sing abusive songs about someone's wife then have total apoplexy when the target responds with a cupped ear or a wanker sign. "Oooh, he's really upset my delicate sensibilities, I shall have to lie down in a darkened room for half an hour". Just tighten your corsets and have a whiff of the smelling salts dear, you'll be fine.

Yes, actually I see your point.
