Title: Green Man alternative Post by: jimmy_onions on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:08:59 To all you London Reds, or anyone else generally in the know....
Seeing as it would appear there will be 17500 town fans at the green man on sunday, and apparently they only have two bar staff on, and the IPA is off....can anyone suggest any alternatives, either a short walk, or a tube stop or two away from the ground? Cheers. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: sn5_red on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:14:09 the globe, marylebone road. outside baker street station. town fans coming from paddington and going to wembley park will change here
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: 4D on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:15:54 I don't tend to drink in the pubs around the ground, due to the congestion. It all depends on what you are after, if you want to sing a few songs etc. then get to one of the Wembley pubs. When I have done the train journey to Wembley I usuall stop off in a pub over the road from Paddington, there is a collection of eateries in the same street. It's easy enough to just hop off at one of the tube stops and go find a pub; I ended up in a pub on the Edgware Road one time :-[
The Grand Junction pub at Harlesden is only a couple of stops down, beer garden overlooking the Grand Union Canal, I went there en route to an England game - it was 14 years ago though ??? Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Batch on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:16:34 Wondered the same thing. Every man and his dog last night seem to part friends with "see you at the Green Man"
Still with kids and non-regulars in tow it'll probably be a couple of Wembley pints for me anyway :( Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: london_red on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:30:24 A few of us are going to the Wetherspoons in the O2 centre by Finchley Road tube (one stop down from Wembley on the Metropolitan line)
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: 4D on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 09:36:57 There's also a Yates and Wetherspoons side by side at Leicester Square - a fry up and a pint :I'm a complete mofleakin Deak

I won't be popping in there this time though.
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 11:12:32 I have a question about pubs around Marlybone. Are they likely to be open before 12? Bearing in mind its a Sunday and most open at 12?
Any decent pubs in that area that aren't Weatherspoons? Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Gethimout on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 11:32:29 There's also a Yates and Wetherspoons side by side at Leicester Square - a fry up and a pint :I'm a complete mofleakin Deak This! Not sure that will be the case this time though. Also the Globe isn't very big and can get rammed. If the weather is nice then it's best to stand outside with some cans from the Tescos (?) round the corner, as it will be cheaper that buying pints at the bar! :pint: Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Ƭ̵̬̊: The Artist Formerly Known as CWIG on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 13:12:56 JJ Moons, if you're a cool kid you're go there.

Thousands of boozers in London and people want to go to these places Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 13:49:08 Weatherspoons or Yates? Thousands of boozers in London and people want to go to these places Hence my question on the previous page. Do people really only drink in these places in the UK these days? Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Abrahammer on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 13:51:49 There are last resort places as far as I'm concerned.
Prefer my beer not to have that watery taste to it. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: BrightonRed on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 13:55:57 For those that do want to go to the Wetherspoons at Baker Street it's open from 10am on Sunday but will be closing early (3.30/4pm).
Apparently. A while to get served and then order 24 pints!....job done. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Ƭ̵̬̊: The Artist Formerly Known as CWIG on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 19:21:20 Is that song saved for wembley trips only? To a man singing it vehemnetly in those clips, yet barely heard before or since? It usually gets brought out around wembley time yeah, very rarely gets sung otherwhys. Bit disappointing that it was the only song on video though as we seemed to go through the entire back catalogue of Swindon songs that day, from team of Alan Reeves, to walking in a Finney wonderland to the very last song and a moment I will always remember 'One Jimmy Davis' as everyone left the pub with the massive flag above our heads, great moment. The people who went to the green man that day really don't quite get just how good it was in JJ Moons when people say it....unfortunately it was all down hill from there. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Give us an S on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 01:06:36 JJ Moons was class last time and I will certainly be going back. By far the best pre match atmosphere I have heard. Non stop for 4 hours. Always enough room to move even though people were queuing outside to get in. And the bar was well staffed from what I remember. Dont get why everyone is choosing the green man over this. But we will all have a great time there again :)
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Arriba on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 09:48:24 Maybe if people didn't sing for hours in the pubs last time, they might have created some atmosphere in the stadium where it mattered?
Have to admit going to rammed pubs with singing going on isn't top of my list. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: jimmy_onions on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 09:49:45 does anyone know if there are actually any designated pubs?
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: 4D on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 09:50:03 Agree arriba, the atmosphere was better in the concourse last time
Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Arriba on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 09:54:03 Are there pubs near to Wembley Park station? Not sure my party will want to walk from Stonebridge park to the pubs near Wembley central.

Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 10:11:55 Result aside, that was my biggest regret from two years ago. Belting atmosphere in the pubs (and for all the talk of the Green Man and JJ Moons, there seems to have been a cracking atmosphere in quite a lot of pubs)...and then it fell so flat in the stadium.
Hopefully the singing areas will rectify some of that this time. I'm not going to have too much opportunity for pubbing before the game this time around. It's all about Wembley and the game this time around. I've completely changed my mind about the JPT. First cup win in the offing during my lifetime. Can't come soon enough now. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Give us an S on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 18:33:41 Last time the poor atmosphere was partly down to the fact we played so poor but mainly because everyone was spread out. With larger crowds it also takes longer for songs to spread about and you will get one area singing one song and another a different song at times. Something like give us an S will be hard unless a group start it. And short songs don't work, but songs that last for a while will soon get picked up by everyone and I think it will be a far far better atmosphere with the singing area. All I ask is when we song We are Paolos red and white army, please don't start clapping and ruin it. Why do we do this?

As much as you lads at the back of the Town End like to amuse yourselves with some of your newly made up songs, it's not a day for it (apart from the Alan McCormack one, that could work)
Persistent chanting of 'Paolo DiCanio' 'We are Paolo's Red and White Army' 'We are the Red and White Army' and 'We are the Swindon, we're top of the league' will catch on and won't be finished by the time people four blocks away have had the chance to realise it's started  It also helps that 'Come on you reds' is an option this time  Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 22:36:12 Perhaps other people need to start some songs rather than relying on a group of people who will probably represent the tiniest fraction of the Wembley crowd?
I think people are worrying too much, the fans who want to make noise are more organised this time. It'll be like an away game with a massive crowd. Plus our generic chants are simple enough for a spastic to learn the words as they go along. Title: Re: Green Man alternative Post by: upfcSwindonFan on Thursday, March 22, 2012, 23:05:36 'we're going up', 'you're going down' another simpleton
