Title: worm drowning Post by: steptoe41 on Sunday, October 23, 2011, 19:48:22 After many years spent abusing my body with various sporting activities, I am toying with the idea of taking up fishing again.
Nothing to serious, just the odd day spent on the various lakes and ponds around the town. Can anybody point me in the right direction as to what I should be looking for tackle wise, and where to buy it and what to avoid? Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: Crispy on Sunday, October 23, 2011, 20:19:41 Hinders in Swindon is decent for tackle. Depends what type for fishing your doing for what tackle you use. At my local lake I find the carp bite fine on just sweetcorn and SPAM meat, but floating bread works too.
My prefered set up is a Float Rod with a 2bb float on and obviously the 2 bb weights, just bottom fishing with SPAM. I've got all the rigs and boilies and what not, but don't seem to get on with that too well! Cheers Crispy, I fished a lot as a kid, most of it on plaum's pit and Telfords pool in rodbourne, mainly for tench, roach, etc, so am basically looking to do the same. I will need the works, rod, reel, nets, brolly, comfy chair and so on. Is the House of angling on commercial road any good? Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: Samdy Gray on Sunday, October 23, 2011, 20:28:06 I've bought from them in the past. Haven't fished in years though.

Few on here...best to shop around and maybe start off on the cheap....if you get into it then move on. Last time i went fishing some bloke with a beard was walking on the water....put me off for life. Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: Bogus Dave on Sunday, October 23, 2011, 20:40:18 I used to fish in Raychem Lagoon when I was younger, about 3-4 years ago. Was decent then, fair amount of decent sized bream and a number of carp around the 10lb mark. Not sure what it's like now though.
I used to catch shit loads of bream with a quiver tip, just using maggots or sweetcorn. Never been to the House of Angling, Only Hinders as far as Tackle shops in Swindon goes. If you want a save a few pennies i suggest buying a decent sized tackle box that could double up as a seat. Some of the chairs are quite expensive! Also recommend avoiding the flavored sweetcorn - In my experience it comes off hook far too often on a long cast! The theory goes that fish especially salmon have a keen sense of smell and pick up on female pheromones....they can't resist, like a lot of blokes.
So a good tip is to pack some of your missus's dirty undies in your tackle :) Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: nevillew on Monday, October 24, 2011, 16:05:00 The biggest surprise in this thread is that Crispy seems quite knowledgable on a subject... I presume he only catches whitebait ? Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: TheDukeOfBanbury on Monday, October 24, 2011, 18:29:12 Love fishing as much as following the Town. I mainly fish for Barbel. Went at the weekend but blanked on the River Teme into dark. Need some Rain. Advice I would give is: 1. Fish for bites and not for fish. Sounds daft but get used to striking, timing and landing. 2. Fish with the smallest possible hook to size of bait 3. Fish with the smallest diameter line as poosible without harming the fish by "snapping up" 4. Bait presentation and actual bait is everything. 5. Talk to other Anglers on the waters you fish and most of all watch and learn. 6. Take a camera. A early Autumn 12lb 6oz Barbel last season on home made paste. Best ever catch - 3 Seasons ago early season on Thames - 14 Barbel in one Morning (2 Doubles in the catch) 13 Chub also in that session with 2 over 5LB. Simply magical but blanks are part of the sport when you target particular species. Tight Lines. http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y377/MarkBowler/P1010011.jpg As good as a goal in the Town End. Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, October 24, 2011, 20:06:01 Ha, tempting a newbie with tales of 10lb+ Barbel. He'll get the fright of his fucking life trying to land one of them feisty little fuckers.
Title: Re: worm drowning Post by: Batch on Monday, October 24, 2011, 20:24:37 You're not fooling anyone Banbury, it's clearly the same fish that you bought from Asda fish counter. You can see it still has icicles on its mouth ;)
