Title: Faster than light Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 18:41:21 The boffins at Cern appear to have made some subatomic particles go faster than the speed of light....
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15017484 If true it will be the greatest scientific discovery ever, or at least since Einstein said nothing was faster than light. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Benzel on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 18:51:21 Oooo serious consequences? I'm intrigued.
Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 19:05:59 Well yes, if this is correct then it just about makes all theories since (and including) Einstein's theory of relativity completely void.
E will no longer equal MC2 Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: fatbasher on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 19:14:40 Probably greased lightening :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

E will no longer equal MC2 Well untill i see it proven i wont take there word for it. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: thedarkprince on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 19:28:42 I can't comprehend what this would actually mean if confirmed. Anyone able to offer a serious answer?
Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Fred Elliot on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 19:38:03 I can't comprehend what this would actually mean if confirmed. Anyone able to offer a serious answer? That travelling back in time is a distinct possibility Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: leefer on Thursday, September 22, 2011, 19:39:16 That travelling back in time is a distinct possibility Go to Macclesfield next friday...travelling back in time will be confirmed. In layman's terms it would mean that some crazy shit would theoretically be possible, albeit as theoretically possible as us winning the Champions League within 5 seasons. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, September 23, 2011, 10:56:44 It was actually the second round of neutrinos fired which went faster than light. It's because they were bound for the reload

Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Ardiles on Friday, September 23, 2011, 12:01:48 Surely all that 'theory' is is an attempt to rationalise observable phenomena. As our ability to observe improves with technological advance, theories almost always have to be adapted or discarded to handle this.
Newton's Laws of Motion are a good example. They do a good job of explaining movement in time & space on the macro scale (which is all he was able to observe at the time he proposed the laws), but completely failed to explain it at the quantum level - giving rise to the development of quantum theory in the last century. Even if the new findings are upheld, Einstein's theory will have lasted over 100 years before requiring a tweak...which is impressive. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, September 23, 2011, 12:15:10 Exactly Ardiles, that's the beauty of physics. Theories are just that, theories. They are there to be disproved, at which point everything gets torn up and they start again.
If anyone else has read Brian Cox's book "Why does E=mc2?" you will know what I mean. Fucking love that book. See if you can get A Very Short Introduction to Particle Physics. Another fascinating read. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: iffy on Friday, September 23, 2011, 16:52:21 I love that it's one of two things and it's either amazing or stupid. Either:
1. Things can go faster than light. This means 'cause and effect' as we understand it MIGHT NOT BE TRUE. You would live your life in a very different way if you knew that the consequences weren't related to what you did. And time travel. 2. There was an eyelash or something on the machine that did the experiment. I'm betting on 2. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: thedarkprince on Friday, September 23, 2011, 19:09:12 Fuck time travel. I'm still waiting for the damn hoverboard.

Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: jonny72 on Friday, September 23, 2011, 21:56:54 2. There was an eyelash or something on the machine that did the experiment. Or one half of the team was working in metric and the other in imperial measurements. Though to do that you'd have to be a) really dumb or b) NASA. Title: Re: Faster than light Post by: jim on Saturday, September 24, 2011, 09:46:39 The bartender says "Sorry sir, we don't allow faster than light particles in here". A neutrino walks into a bar.
