Title: Swindon - rovers 2012
Post by: TimK81 on Monday, September 5, 2011, 09:17:31
dear Robins,
Together with my brother I would like to visit the clash with bristol rovers in March 2012. I'm from Holland and fan of enlglish league football.
I know it's a long way off but I just wanted to ask you something about ticket sales for this match
Do you think tickets for this fixture will be sold online? Or do you expect police restrictions?
What was the procedure last season?
I hope you can help me.
Thanks in advance!
Tim

I expect tickets will be sold online, if not it's just as easy to ring up and get them or buy them on the day. You will have no trouble getting tickets at all, can't see it being a sell out by a long shot.

It's a slight possibility that it will be all ticket. I'd advise contacting the club before you travel.

Good to see you coming along to a proper game and not the McPremier bollocks.

The premier league isn't my cup of tea anymore. Its all about money, money and how can i forget to mention it: money!
I hope I can get tickets.

Does "all ticket" means that there's no sell of tickets on the day of the game? Or does it means more than that?

That's exactly what it means. You have to buy in advance. They are normally sold from 4 weeks in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if the KO time gets changed, as the police have a reputation of doing that against Wovers.

Well to be honest I tought I knew what it meant. But I was not entirely sure. When I visit the Uk for a football game (once in a year) I always buy tickets in advance. I never pay attention to wheter a game is called an "all ticket match".
What I do understand is that your name suggest you're a forest fan  :D

Well the plan is to come over for a weekend so I think more games will be difficult. But perhaps when there's another fixture in the area that weekend. We want to stay in bristol.

Tim to fit in better when you come to watch Swindon i advise the following;

Choose a player to hate, an old fav is Phill Smith but new front runners are Risser and Devera
A favorite cheese is a must
Decide if you support PDC or hate for his previous opinions then refer to him as Paolo
and if you really want to fit in get in an argument with a forum member than delete your account in a attention seeking huff

I'm off to Amsterdam next month and have been to Eindhoven for 3 PSV games. I like the dutch.

We're looking for pubs, shops, perhaps a gig, historic buildings etc.

Im from a town called Heemskerk. 25 mins from Amsterdam city centre, 10 mins from the sea.

I support Ajax. Seasonticketholder as well. Grew up with it. My family originally is from Amsterdam.

Im not to fond with psv. Dislike everything about that club. Alltough the city of eindhoven is nice and the philips stadium also is not bad. why psv?

Also spent some time around amersfoort, all very nice indeed. You won't be short of pubs, clubs etc in Bristol. I used to live there and the nightlife's good. You rarely get many 'big' gigs in Bristol anymore but depending on your musical tastes there's normally something to entertain yourself. If you want a proper westcountry drinking experience, sample some lekker ciders in the corination tap...........hangover guaranteed!

What I mean is, Bristol used to be the place for big gigs in the south west but it now seems that a fair proportion of bands prefer to do Cardiff instead. There are still a few gems now and again but it's not as consistent as it once was

bristol is very good for pubs (corination tap is a must if you enjoy cider) and their is a really good music (from folk, rock to dance) and arts scene (banksy). Loads of standard high street shopping as well as interesting inderpendant places. There is a rich maritime heritage and Bath is a 10 minute train ride away with beautiful georgian architecture and museums

Correct. Some of the classic places (such as the Thekla) used to have someone of interest playing every week. I haven't heard of anyone playing there for about a year that's tickled my fancy. Having said that the Bristol music scene tends to go with the trends and dubstep just doesn't do it for me. However Tim, I know you crazy Dutch love a good all night pilled up hardcore event so you might have a great time! ;)

I live in Luxembourg and Eindhoven is the easiest Dutch city to get to. We've had a few good night outs in Eindhoven to try and go once a season. The main street in Eindhoven with all the bars is a particular favourite!

That sounds about right! I used to live in temple quay and the state of castle park after hours was something else. It seems that Bristol parks become palygrounds for gurners when the moon's out. Unfortunately I used to work with a City fan and a Rovers fan. I had to suffer the rovers drubbings and the City relegation. As soon as redundancy hits, we fucking win!

Well I prefer indie music (arctic monkeys, arcade fire, blood red shoes, courteeners, kasabian etc) but on a night out I also like dance or even cheesy. English nightlife is quite an experience for dutch people, especially the way the women/girls are dressed  :)

The thekla is now owned by the people who own the social in nottingham and it still has a lot of indie gigs on.

I recommend the manchester orchestra on the 2nd october.  Bristols music scene is pretty disparate with a lot of small venues that go in and out of fashion.

I would also recommend having a pre-match 'Football Special' at the chip shop 'The Frying Fish', which is just over the road from the ground. They get a bit busy on matchdays, but it's worth it.

Also get into Swindon early as Wovers chavs have a bit of a reputation over the last few years against us and there will be a big police presence at the train station, which is just outside the town centre, and 10-15 mins walk to the ground.

Before the Crewe match we saw about a dozen loads of 'something and chips' on the floor from that place. Either the food was terrible, or the bags they were using were feeble, or over vinegered!!

Do you have any tips on getting access to tickets for Ajax?

I follow Ajax and have been to a handful games at the Arena over the last few years.
Am looking to get to a match again this season but find that getting tickets isn't easy as the club will only sell to those outside Netherlands with an expensive package.
In past years I've used TicketUnlimited but end up paying a hefty mark-up.

York Road is the best chippie in Swindon and about 5 minutes further away.

Although they do charge for Ketchup, which always annoys me in a Chip Shop. Just make the damn things 20p more expensive, I won't notice that.

I know it's hard for people from abroad to get tickets. As a seasonticketholder it's possible for me to buy a few (max 4) seats extra. But not for all games (for example home games against feyenoord and psv). TicketUnlimited sells expensive tickets I know. Unfortunately I dont know any other legal ways of getting access. If you like Im willing to buy tickets for you? Just let me know.

Gravlaks in Norwegian. Laks (or lax) is indeed salmon. Grav is literally translated as grave or buried.

It's still probably nicer than lutefisk.

TBF I have a problem working out which is which....hence a recent conversation to clarify the Drove Road place. I have been known to use the Chapel Street Lidl...to purchase interesting tins of Norwegian fish.
Another red herring Reg ?

Well now I know everything about the best chippys and supermarkets near the ground.  ;D
What are the best pre match pubs for home fans?  :beers:

As someone previously said The Glue Pot in the town centre is a favourite along with The County Ground Hotel, which you cannot miss as it's 100 metres from the ground next to the car park.

Tim, if you come to the Legends lounge which is inside the stadium before the game I'll buy you and your Brother a pint to welcome you.

Thanks for the offer.  I'll pm you nearer the time but will probably look to come across in Feb or March for one of NEC, Roda or RKC games.

Hey lads, I'm back on the forum now the match against rovers is getting closer. I bought two tickets online. The sale for this match has been online for one day. The day after I bought the tickets it wasn't possible anymore to buy the in the online ticketshop. Strange but true. I have to collect the tickets on the matchday.

You really helped me out with advices about the best boozers and chipies before the game! Thanks again. And since I became a member on this forum your team started to win most of the games  :D  I hope to see the JPT cup too!

I have a last question for you. As already mentioned I will go to Swindon by train from Bristol Temple Meads station. But I want to avoid being escorted by the police with bristol fans who probably are on the train too. How late do you advice me to arrive in Swindon to avoid any problems? Thanks

Just a year, occasionally upfront for the latter stages of games.

Bart Griemink was another Dutch player who was here at the time. He's long since retired though.

He was a goalkeeper wasnt he? He's not very known in Holland because he spent most of his career in England.
And how about Etienne Esajas? How many appearances did he made so far this season? Not very much I reckon?

Esajas didn't work out.  Great reports in pre-season, but he was quickly overtaken in the pecking order, first by Lander Gabilondo (who himself has since been overlooked) and then by the likes of Luke Rooney.

or in graphical format...

Esajas < Gabilondo < De Vita < Rooney < Holmes

Not many. Paolo doesn't appear to rate him very highly and we have our strongest competition down the flanks, especially since Rooney & Holmes arrived.

Just don't advertise that you're going to the game and you'll be fine, I've made the journey for many a Bristol game and never got mixed in with them. If a copper does ask you whether you're going to the football, the stock answer is "what football, is that why the train was so busy?". With a Dutch accent, you have an added advantage.
