Wray suggesting new manager will have 100% responsibility for footballing matters including who of the 12 gets offered new deals. Sounds promising.

In by mid-May too.

Indeed. If they were aware that some fans were concerned with Fitton's involvement in footballing matters he seems to address it directly:

Quote
I am a great believer that the football decisions will be made by the manager

Quote
Ultimately I want a manager who is his own man and I will leave the decision down to him

Speaking with Ralph yesterday his dad mentioned Phill Parkinson as manager. I think that would be a quality choice. Not sure if his name has been mentioned before?

music to my ears. give the manager a budget and if he fucks up then only he is to blame.the chairmans input this season has not helped.
glad that kills off the director of football rumours too which i never thought would happen anyway.
clearly lessons have been learned, and now the most important managerial appointment for years needs to be made.
good luck with that jeremy.

Forgot about Parkinson, I'd be well happy with him - Charlton were 3rd when they sacked him. (13th, to save you looking it up)

yes he was very unfairly treated at Charlton and i think he'd do a brilliant job here. Maybe we should drop nick a message just to remind him he's out there

National media are saying its Wally Downes' job to turn down if he wants it.

Wouldnt want Parkinson, Charlton overspent and he's put them another step backwards as a club. Plus he's a Reading man.

Good to hear the manager will get say over contracts. We need to buy players who are needed in the first team. There has still been no interview from Wilson since he left, Im interested what he thought of the transfer policy. You have to wonder if he is not allowed to give an interview until the end of the season?

I'd certainly be more happy with Parkinson than Trollope or Richard Money.

Treated unfairly by Charlton. Where has sacking him got them ?

They were going downhill rapidly before he left.

They have also made a terrible appointment. Sorry to say that Bodin would probably work out the same for us.

And he plays lump ball. I think Wray said he wanted someone that played decent football. Rules Parkinson out.

I also never said i'd completely fuck off - just I really dont care right about now and wont be getting a season ticket for L2 football, unless the new managerial appointment shows some serious intent to piss the league.

Certainly got a right temper on him. But you cant help but admire his work with Coppell at Reading. Points record in the 2nd tier. Great achievement.

I know a number of people who didn't renew, but are now considering whether to dependant on who's appointed.  A good appointment will certainly pull in a fair few more - I'm not sure many will rush if it's Wally Downes tbh.
Just out of a matter of interest DV, who would fall into that category in your eyes?

Honestly, I'm not quite sure at the moment.

Alan Mac has talked a really good game on the radio this season, so much so that I'd like to see him give it a go.

Other than that, just someone who will make me (well all of us i suppose) think 'right this guy knows what he is doing'  'this guy knows how to get the best out of his players' ' this guy knows how to get out of L2'

Someone who is a bit old school and sees the importance of the squad having the best fitness levels possible.

I couldnt give a flying fuck about good football. I'd take 46 ugly hoofball 1-0 wins next season in a heartbeat.

We need a winner who will bring in a winning, be the best mentality through out the club. Like Wise and Sturrock did last time. No fucking about, they were hard working winners.

I don't fancy having Wally Downes as our manager at all, hes had one managers job before at Brentford and nearly got them relegated from the division we are in now and the previous season they finished in 16th place.

Since he has been appointed defensive coach at the hammers have their results got any better? no, have they started conceding less goal? no.

Hes an assistant at best but not a manager.

Title: Re: Adver News: Wray will act fast to appoint permanent boss

Just think he would be an appointment based on his playing career. Same as Powell.

Dont think Trollope would be such a bad dissapointment myself, especially if it was with someone like Downes.

I was impressed with him when he commentated as well. He' s apparently still very friendly with Bodin, so I suppose there's the possibility of them linking up as a team? No proven managerial record, so could be risky, but prob no more so than the likes of Wally Downes . Massive fans favourite in his day tho and would probably bring a few more back through the gates. I'd be pleased to see him given a try. My fave player in 1989-90!

I do feel that Wray and Watkins will really try and get this decision right tho.  Let's hope they do and we're not all left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. It will be a shame if we kick off League 2 in a air of pessimism.

Fitton rated Trollope.....now he's gone, albeit technically into the background, I'm not convinced he'll get it.

Whoever gets it will probably need to win the first 6 games, like Wise, in order to avoid abuse. Town fans aren't happy bunnies at the moment. I'm really not liking the Downes talk....if it happens it will just prove lessons haven't been learned.

Well it's possible that he was lined up as head coach by Fitton with Hart DOF. Of course now Fitton isn't chairman Wray has made the decision that Hart will not be here at all. I guess with this in mind we can assume Trollope won't be happening.

I just think why write off a boss (like Trollope) who has proved he can lead a L1 club? They were always a tough game until this season.

Bodin doesnt have the charisma in my opinion. He needs to get a job and be a success in the non leagues first. We dont want another Onoura. Base the appointment on managerial ability, not playing ability.

Every single manager ever known had to start someware,if you appointed a manager on managerial ability only.................you would never get any new managers surely.
If we are not to get a manager who will excite the masses then i would be more than happy with Paul Bodin.

My non-scientific ratings (others may disagree):

Good Rookies
Dennis WISE
Glenn HODDLE
Ossie ARDILES

Bad Rookies:
Maurice MALPAS
Iffy ONUORA
Jimmy QUINN
Steve MCMAHON
John GORMAN

Good Experienced:
Danny WILSON
Paul STURROCK
Andy KING

Bad Experienced
Paul HART
Roy EVANS
Colin TODD

Not sure what this shows really, other than its not an easy decision.

My opinion is the rebuilding job is so big that we need to hit the ground running. We are likely to do that with someone with experience.

I've placed Gorman as a rookie as he didn't have managerial experience before us.

What is the critera for experienced of otherwise? Gorman had one assistant job before being made manager. Malpas, as a 'rookie', had one year of club management and one at U21 at international level. Also Quinn had been a joint boss at Reading for two years or so before joining us.

Don't know what this means but some shuffling might be needed in that list.

Oh and Andy King was a fucking idiot, who couldn't even run Luton's club shop properly.

Bumclouds. Took me so long, Donkey sorted it out himself.

Gorman should have been down as a rookie. King was a difficult one, he was a gobshite. But yet he took us to the playoffs and had a good eye for a player.

Exactly....Zippy had a go at Bath City, wasn't up to it and sensibly took a post more suited to his abilities.

In my opinion, the Board should wait to see the outcome of the Conference PO's then go and speak with Mellon....if Fleetwood make it, then he may want to stay with them...but if not we might be seen as progress.

I actually interviewed Mellon as part of a uni assignment this week. Fleetwood are flying and why would he leave them? They just had a new £4mil stand built and have had 8 promotions in 9 years. They look a tidy outfit too and are a club massively on the up.

I'm not massively keen on Trollope or Bodin, but don't think either would be a disaster. Downes is interesting tho....

Was he scary Scottish....like a Billy Davies.

I don't think he will go if they get promotion, but he might be tempted away by a sizeable salary and bonuses for promotion etc.

We need someone with a bit of experience and a bit of hunger to improve, even if it means they'll fuck off fairly soon.

I'm getting the definitive lowdown on Trollope's position at Rovers from reliable sources. I was also led to believe that Rovers couldn't afford to pay him of when they relieved him of his duties, so he's seeing out the remainder of his contract (i.e. gardening leave). Will update when I have more.

Bad Rookies:
John GORMAN

To be fair to Gorman he had us playing decent football, with a bit of luck and Fjortoft firing from the start of the season we could have done better in the PL and then Kevin Morris' death had a major impact on the club the following season.

Don't think McMahon was that bad either, sure he got us relegated but he got us straight back up again.

Lumping them both in with Malpas is a tad distorted.

I'd like to see us going back to a player-manager as it worked well in the past, though admittedly it's a lot harder getting anyone of the class of Hoddle, Ardiles, Macari (and even McMahon) to do that nowadays.

With Gorman he was just painfully out of his depth.  The performances the following season proved this.  He seemed like a really decent bloke.

Part of the McMahon dislike is his personality, but also he did take us away from the good football we played under Ossie, Hoddle and to a lesser extent Gorman.  As has been mentioned his treatment of Rowland, Taylor and (especially) Trollope was appalling.  Chris Hay was never the same after he'd finished with him, too.

Agreed, but at least he got results (sort of) which is something and makes the rest of it slightly forgivable. Plus he was pretty pleasant when I talked to him at a shareholders meeting, though I guess he was on his best behaviour.
