Title: Re: The "Did you know" thread Post by: Barry Scott on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 22:31:39 Quite a basic fact, but a nice one nonetheless. Aluminum was actually the second name we gave to Aluminium, which was itself, surprisingly, the third name. Aluminium stuck because scientists around the time preferred sticking to the ium already used in other elements such as sodium, iridium, calcium and what not. (The first name was Alumium.)
Eighty odd years ago, Americans moved back to Aluminum, from Aluminium and only a few decades ago did the element officially become named, world-wide (for want of a better way of putting it) Aluminium. As i doubt its to genuinly help people become better spellers. I see it everyday on facebook and other forums respectivly, and i just don't get it. Im writing on a forum, not a letter to the alan sugar asking to be his foot stool Serious answer - some days are better than others for me, but generally it really grates when I see instances of horrible/careless spelling. I know posts aren't supposed to be legal documents, but I tend to attach less credence to posts that contain such errors. The more sanctimonious the post, the more liable I am to point out these things (not necessarily in the case of your post) I also take great delight in winding up knowledgeable and erudite posters when they make a rare slip (eg Reg) Title: Re: The "Did you know" thread Post by: nevillew on Thursday, July 29, 2010, 14:52:24 Spot on Chubbs.Gets on my fucking tits the twats on here pulling you up for everything. This practise continued into the nineteenth century, and was one of the causes of the Indian Mutiny - the cartridges were greased with cow fat, and Hindu soldiers were expected to 'bite the bullet', which they were notr keen to do, because of cows being sacred and that.... Title: Re: The "Did you know" thread Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 29, 2010, 15:06:57 Without wanting to ruin the thread and make it descend into debate (probably too late now I've started typing), I'm of the same opinion as nev.
I know I'm not personally always 100% correct with my spelling and grammar and I fully understand that some people have dyslexia and/or other learning difficulties and therefore do struggle with spelling and punctuation etc. But what grates me the most is people who a) use "txt spk" or b) don't use punctuation or capitalisation because they either can't be bothered or just because they choose not to. For me personally it's a matter of pride and self-image, kind of the same way I wouldn't walk into work on a Monday morning with my shirt hanging out of my trousers and my shoes not polished.
