Title: The Positives Thread!!!
Post by: herthab on Monday, April 26, 2010, 09:35:27
With all the fucking moaning on here, from 'bottling' auto's to players celebrating, not to mention all the political doom laden threads, I thought it would be refreshing to have one devoted to positives since the start of the season.

Here's my Top Ten (In no particular order).

Charlie Austin.
Leeds 0-3 Swindon.
Southampton 0-1 Swindon.
Swindon 3-0 Leeds.
Johnny Douglas.
The re-vitalised JPM.
Super Billy Paynter.
Danny Wilson.
The Board.
Clinching a Play-off spot, when I was expecting a mid-table finish.

Great stuff, Herthab - I would add to all those - which I agree with - Simon Ferry, the improvement of LJF when he gets to play, and our style of football.

To be honest, I think the whole season has been a positive! Like you said, most would've taken a mid table finish and to get a play-off place is a brilliant achievement for everyone at the club. Although very unlikely, 2nd is still a possibility.

I would also like to remind everyone that a year ago to the day I was waking up with a slight hangover after celebrating a 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers to guarentee our safety in League One.

This season, whatever happens, has been bloody brilliant.

The timing is positive.  We can get all the 'just missed out on 2nd spot' angst out of the way right now.  By the time the play offs do arrive, we'll be fired up and right up for it.  Missing out on the final day vs Millwall could have been a problem.

The whole season has bene a high for me but i'd also like to mention some others

Andrew Fitton & the board for all the hard work they've put in keeping our club healthy
George Wood - Goalkeeping coach
Danny Wilson - For being our Manager
Peter Shirtliff - His presence in training has helped develop some of players
Paul Bodin - Excellent job done on the youth

All of the STFC squad for entertaining me this season

Mostly some of the most exciting football we've seen in ages, and all the things everyone else has said, but I think the season ticket prices staying so low also deserves a mention in its own right

Someone should print this off and take it to the players. Show them we fucking care and that when we hear people boo, it fucking hurts us too.

Allowing the pork and stuffing van to pitch outside the Town end is also a brilliant touch by the club, it gives an alternative to shit burgers and hot dogs.

Agree with pretty much everyhing said so far in this thread.

This has been the season that has restored the pride in being a Swindon Town supporter.

I genuinely think this isnt a blip either, even if we dont go up and lose a couple of players, they will be sold at a significant profit and adequatley replaced.

Our shirt sponsors for this season - they must be two of the best names in the football league to have on the shirt.

Exactly!! We bought in Greer, JD, Lucas, Cuthbert etc after having a shocking season and narrowly avoiding relegation to the depths of L2 football. I have high hopes that if some of them go then they will be replaced by players of equal class and ability. Surely players will see STFC as a club that is on the up in many ways and this should attract some decent signings.

unless clubs that come in pay bigger dosh,or are in a higher division, most will stay on i think.
you always get some who will move for the money,but i'm sure we pay decent wedge nowadays anyway

Whilst it's not nice to worry that we'll lose decent players in the summer, when we're worrying that we're going to lose:

- Two prolific strikers
- The best centre-mid we've had in at least 15 years
- One of the best centre-backs since Taylor/Calderwood

I like to remind myself that this forum nearly when into meltdown when Rhys 'Calamity' Evans and Sean O'Hanlon didn't sign new contracts a few years back.

That's how much times have changes.

Football being the main topic of conversation.

Not having to even think/worry/discuss about what is going on off the pitch.

And when we do Fitton/Watkins et al almost always making the right call or have inspired ideas.

Excellent point.  A few years ago, this forum was dominated by discussions of CVAs, balance sheets, preferred creditors and boardroom incompetence.  Great to be able to focus on the football now.

Yeovil attending only his second home game of the season against walsall and half way through the second half saying "I had forgotten how ace this is" with a big grin on his face.

Decent performances against Prem teams in both League and FA Cups. None of this getting knocked out by teams like Histon.

Investment in the pitch last summer which gave us the best, most resilient pitch at the CG for many years - which must have helped our brand of passing football.

 - This thread and everything mentioned in it;
 - Only having to pay £10.869565 per home game (Arkells);
 - Bumping into Don Rogers a few times after home games & exchanging quick remarks about how well it's going. He is fucking buzzing;
 - The cute brunette in the club shop;
 - The spring in everyone's step & smiles on their faces after games;
 - The progress being made with the stadium redevelopment;
 - 3700 season tickets already sold for 10/11 (please keep climbing);
 - Positive comments about our team in the media, and from other teams' fans (even some O*ford fans around here after watching the Exeter game).

Great post...all the above and...

The Prospect House as the clubs charity.
Fans memorial day.
Forces day.

Little things that will help get local people interested.
Really enjoyed watching the Town this season and really hope my cheapo Townend ticket will be watching Championship footy next season.

Fuck me, that really puts things into perspective. I remember being gutted when Sabin left...

The stand out thing for me is the board. I feel properly happy with everything they've done and are doing. They have my complete and total trust.

On the playing side i just love the JPM and Manky interplay. It's been a revelation. Not just the improvement in both players (most notably JPM), but the way they can single handedly tear the opposition team a new arsehole.
