full backs - couldn't pass, tackle, time or judge a run all day centrebacks - looked very exposed, always looked scared with a fast player against them wingers - tried hard but the lack of fullback assistance forwards meant they were exposed and had to just lump rubbish balls into the box centre mid - douglas looked good enough, ferry...not so strikers - no decent ball, when it did stick with them they were completely isolated. subs were strange, we brought on ritchie and he did little, pericard looked ok holding the ball up but was again isolated. how sheehan stayed on is beyond me, how he kept taking our set pieces was a bigger mystery i'm pissed off but still retain some hope for the season Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:38:49 we wasted our chances early in the first half, rovers punished us by taking their chances and as a consequence we drifted out of the game and rovers took over and played pretty well. in the second half we came out looking a bit livelier and then totally died after they scored their fourth.

Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Processed Beats on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:43:17 Poor performance all round, but Rovers weren't necessarily amazing today :/ They basically took their chances, which is what we've been going on about all season.
What is it with Lucas and free-kicks? By my counting thats the third or fourth that he's conceded now, admittedly he isnt the tallest but our walls and defense are :/ Full backs didnt link up with their wide men well, which left us flat and fairly one-dimensional. I thought Ward had a mare, but did show glimpses. Douglas and Ferry were alright, JPM wouldnt have been my MOM though. Austin and Billy were also kept out of the game by their podgy centre-halfs, but we did create chances and probably should've scored them but for some decent goalkeeping. All in all, a negative scorline, but not the worst performance in the world. We need Milwall and Huddersfield to drop points today, and these next four and five games are pivotal for our promotion push. I'll be happy with five points from the next three away :) Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Rustle on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:44:07 Just got in,I thought we were by far the better side and still trying to work out how we lost that game, had sheehans free kick not hit the post and rolled along the line i think it would have been a different story, they score a goal against the run of play and the rest is history.
Im not to worried tho it was one of those games where everything fell in the oppositions laps and they took their chances. It just wasn't our day and i dont believe they wanted it more either,we started brightly enough but im wondering if we should have played ourselves in rather than go at it like a bull in a china shop style. Just maybe we was a bit to eager. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:44:37 We didn't deserve to lose that 4-0. 2 goals against the run of play, 1 free kick that shouldn't have been given and crap defending for the other. We must have had more shots on goal than them. Really strange game that. Started really well. Sheehan hit the woodwork from a free-kick as usual and then Charlie missed a great chance.
After the 1st went in though our heads dropped. That was the killer for me. We didn't clear our lines from a corner and their lad has managed to turn and slot in for the 2nd and then it's an uphill struggle from there. I don't know what the free-kick was for really. Seemed to be given for nothing. Good execution from Lines and it's game over at half time. We still had chances even at 4-0 but it just wasn't happening. We had one of those games where we just defended poorly and didn't get the luck in front of goal. Douglas played well. Ferry and JP were alright. Sheehan had a really poor game with poor distribution, no support for the strikers, Ward was marked out of the game (Rovers done their homework on us again) and Manks and JP didn't link as well as they have done. First off day i've seen Cuthbert have at CB. He was off the pace today and couldn't deal with Kuffour. Well i'm shocked at the scoreline but I guess the run had to go at some point. We need to do what we have done after previous defeats and go on another run. Fair play to you! its just a bit of banter and i would fully expect it back the other way... personally think we will finsh 8th or 9th & you lot 7th or 6th!! depends on how both teams take thiss result we have some so say esaier games to come ( exeter, yovile, tranmere, southend) . Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Batch on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:48:33 Bloody odd game that. We controlled most of it, and whilst far from peppering their goal created a few chances. Sheehan hitting the post, Austin's shot being well saved, Paynter hitting the post, McGovern's (?) drive being well saved.
Yet defensively we were a shambles. Greer getting done for pace by Kuffour and no cover on. Good finish though. Ward hashing a clearance. Ferry giving away the free kick and god knows what happened with the fourth. Fair play, Rovers too their chances well, scoring our from six. Looking objectively it wasn't a 4-0 type of game. And we created a few chances despite not scoring for 2 games now. But I don't want to look objectively today. We got dicked by Rovers. Again. It hurts. Season defining spell coming up now. No need for panic yet! Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Bennett on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:50:55 oh one more rant - the stupid bookings we picked up at the end for ridiculous challenges was pathetic.

Absolute shocking performance, crap defence, crap service to the strikers & no fight in the team. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: DV on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 15:56:41 That was odd.
First half Rovers went forward about 3 times all against the run of play and scored 3 (well taken finishes) Second half, they naturally sat back and wasted time, went forward for the first time and scored. They must have scored 4 times from 5 shots at that point I didnt even think they were that good generally. It was their clinical finisher and that was the difference. We probably had more possesion, more shots and most of the game was played in our final 3rd. 14 corners ffs Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Arriba on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:00:08 how we react to that awful result is the important thing now.
some of our players were miles off the pace today.we desperately need a commanding centre mid.to piss weak in there today, and we have needed strengthening there for months Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Barnard on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:12:45 How did that happen? Luck just seemed to have deserted us today with nothing going our way at all.
Sheehan played poorly today and Douglas didn't seem to be bossing the middle of the park like he normally does. Mank's didn't look 100% after his injury either, but other than that we didn't look too bad. We've played a damn site worse this season and won. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:31:49 On a brighter note, Hudds are 2-0 down and Millwall are also a goal behind.
Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: chalkies_shorts on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:33:29 Well that was bizarre. We should have been 2 up and then Rovers score and score again and score again and its half time. We go at them and then its 4. We then piss on them for the rest of the match and it stays 0-4. I hope those giving JFL stick were at the game today to see an absolutely bollox performance from Sheehan with Ward being marginally better. Lucas was crap, the back 4 shocking. I thuoght the midfield and attack did alright and I agreed with JPM for MOM - he kept battling.
Hopefully a bad day at the office. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:36:01 If it means we dick MK 4-1 again (like after the last big hammering we took) I might get over it quite quickly. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: 4D on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 16:57:05 Rovers did a job on us today, defended well and then hit us on the break. They probably only had four attacks/shots and scored each time (I left after the 4th goal so I don't know if they had any more chances). We defended poorly in the box today, but the most frustrating thing for me is we didn't challenge for the second ball. Look at the way we played against Leeds we just didn't give them time with the ball. I think Rovers were there for the taking if we had just battled a bit more. I'm off to the pub tonight :)

I'm always a bit concerned when we come up against a pacey striket, and to be fair Kuffour was lively today. The passing didn't seem as good as normal, to many passes going astray. Oh yeah, and if someone could let Danny Ward know that you are allowed to run around the full back and not just into him all the time that would probably help. When he did decide to try and run passed the full back he did look much better. It's now all about the reaction on Tuesday against the Franchise Scum, if we can go there and beat them we can all forget about this one. Lines is exactly the type of player we could do with - a goalscoring midfielder. Only Rovers player I would have in our first 11, Kuffour and Heffernan were decent for them as well. Worst performance from our full backs this season sadly. Both Charlie and Billy looked static as did our defence, but most disappointing was our complete reluctance to put a challenge in until making a couple of crap ones for bookings late in the game. A bad day for us was summed up when DW took Ferry off to show he was in the same mode as the team. Hope this wakes us up from latterly a few less than convincing games and get back to what we've shown we are really capable of.
Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: SCM on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 18:39:50 Can't complain really.
Rovers had their tactics set out and it worked for them well. We were bound to have moments where we nearly scored, but after the first ten/fifteen minutes it became worryingly apparent we weren't going to find the net. Kuffour and Heffernan are decent enough for this level, with the formers pace causing us no end of problems. Douglas needed to sit deeper in midfield to allow Cuthbert to drop off a couple of yards, but it never happened. Sheehan seemingly forgot how to pass a football today, but he wasn't the only one. MOM was correct I think, JPM seemed to want it more than any of our other players, even at 3-0 down. The thing that disappointed me the most was how we were losing most 50/50 challenges. They wanted it more. You have to say fair play to Rovers, came to do a job, rode their luck at times, but took the chances that came. The criticism of Pericard is slightly harsh, Paynter and Austin were just as poor for me. Day to forget really. I think we're good enough to bounce back at Franchise. Needs to happen now. It's crunch time! Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Arriba on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 19:05:35 good assessment scm.

Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 19:19:56 Kuffour is the type of striker we don't have. Pace and will run at defenders. A bit like Simeon Jackson actually in that respect. The type that we miss at times.
Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 19:38:13 I thought we played pretty good today, were the better side over the 90 minutes and on another day would have won comfortably. Rovers were good at taking the chances they had but in general they weren't that good.
Not sure anyone played badly and the only obvious faults were team wide. The crossing was abysmal, especially in the 2nd half, and plenty of good opportunities were wasted as a result. We can't handle it when we go behind, the team just seem to lose belief and practically give up. There is just a total lack of fight, we see it when we throw games away at the end but its there as well when we go behind. My biggest criticism is of Wilson. At 3-0 down at half time it was time for a bold change yet he did nothing. We actually had options on the bench so why not use them? Why take Austin off for Pericard? Austin didn't have a bad game and is far more creative than Paynter, though why not leave both on and play 3 up front? Why not switch to a 3 man defence to add more width and players in attack? Its not like it could have got much worse. This was just a bad day when things went against us, if Sheehan's freekick had gone in (or someone got the rebound) it would have ended differently. Someone said Rovers dicked us today and they didn't, what happened was we got arse raped by a donkey. I think Wilson is a bit more dispassionate and probably felt the game was dead 10/15 mins into the 2nd half when we hadn't pulled one back so move on and let it go, whereas we see if from the emotive side and want to go gungho for a miracle comeback. Once the 4th went in he had half an eye on Tuesday and getting players off and rested. He has admitted after both Rovers games that he told the players to only worry about trying to get 3 goals back, get one back and see what happens from there. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 20:31:02 kuffour's goal was a pretty good finish. you could see that greer had no chance of keeping up with him for pace.
after that goal - which came slightly against the run of play - the momentum shifted to rovers and it fell apart after that. we weren't great but i've seen plenty of performances far worse than that. on a positive note, only the second game i've seen this season and was really impressed with JP. he looks like a new player, totally reinvented. ward looks like a very promising player but kept running into a wall today. sheehan looked worse than i've ever seen lecs play. The only thing that pisses me off more than watching Swindon lose is listening to our fans after we lose. I actually left the game early because I knew full well I was going to lose it and go mad at our fans. I even shouted something along the lines of 'we're 5th for fuck sake' when we got booed off at half time. Sure I didnt like the score line as much as the next person, but fucking hell. The only thing our fans seem to enjoy is moaning. ...as for that fat beardy cunt (not me!) I dont know why the fuck he botheres every week? Things are really looking up at the CG. No one expected a play-off challenge this season and I'd really like to think that Charlie has had something to do with changing all that. Most clubs have one or two iffy results per season, Poole Town, Man Utd, Swindon Town, nothing's different, different clubs, different leagues.
DW has made a big difference and for some people to be giving him a hard time is just slightly rediculous, but I guess every club has it's minority. I've been coming to the CG since the age of 7 off and on and I really can't recall ever being so excited about things, well apart from my first game, but that was so long ago I can't even remember who it was against, maybe Villa Maybe, I'll finish this post off one day, but there is no need to be getting on the managers back, what ever happens it's been great season so far with lots to get excited by, tho today ain't one of em, but hey ho, who saw this result coming? Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Ralphy on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 22:09:15 I still don't understand why Wilson took Austin off when we're 3-0 nil down at home?? But we put him right and stayed with 4-4-2. I though Ritchie was MOTM he controlled it twice and beat the first man with both his crosses!! Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 22:38:40 What will end up bothering me most about today is Wilson starting with the same 11 players next week. No matter what the result or how bad a game someone has, at present the 11 he started with today will start every game. We do have some other options now but by not using them you risk players becoming complacent.
I'd drop Greer for Morrison, Sheehan for LJF, Ward for Ritchie and Paynter for Pericard. If only to send out a message to the players that their places are not guaranteed and that a shit result will have consequences. At minimum Ritchie should be given a start as he actually looked pretty decent when he came on. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 22:54:46 The four changes I listed is overkill but I reckon some change would be good to stop players becoming complacent and to give some of the others a chance to see what they are capable of - Pericard and Ritchie in particular. Bar Ward I'd say the other 10 players are all untouchable at the moment and could take a shit on Wilson's desk and still not get dropped.
As I said before I don't think anyone was particularly bad today, but you need to change things once in a while. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: deltaincline on Saturday, March 6, 2010, 23:49:40 Couple of quick obs on today:
Sheehan looked like was hung over. Fucking awful peformance. Granted, Pericard hasn't had a decent run in the side yet, but he's been a perenially poor sub for Austin so far. He needs to start earning his wages, let alone repay the faith Wilson showed in him when he signed him. Looks like Austin has hit a brick wall in terms of his confidence in front of goal. Dont see that being a big problem for him or us long term, just something that he'll have to learn to cope with and iron out. Surprised that we didn't go three up front 2nd half. Maybe that's Wilsons experience kicking in at a crucial part of the season though, as someone else alluded to? If the game is out of sight, why chase it? Shit happens, as they say. DW's post match comments were very good. He effectively protected the players for a crap result and then just moved on. The long term game plan will hopefully pay dividends at the end of the season  Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: juddie on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 01:19:28 Had a bit of time to reflect on this game which is a good job, as I was feeling pretty livid/downbeat all avo. Fucking wierd match. If you had said after 20 minutes that we were gonna get dicked 4-0, I would have laughed in your face.
Still, my take: Maybe they're just one of those teams we can't deal with? Remember playing John Beck's Cambridge? We don't have to play them again, and last time we got preoper tonked we had Franchise away... look what happene then. Defensively we were poor today. Their front two, especially Kuffour, were lively as fock. A rare off day for all four at the back. Our distribution from the flanks was particularly abysmal, from sheehan and manky. Douglas was poor today, and I didn't agree with Ferry coming off. Thought he was one of the few bright sparks. Crosses: we have to lift the ball over the first man - fucking infuriating. Think only Ritchie managed this all game. He looked pretty tasty when he came on I thought. Ward running into players has been covered, so I won't dwell! I thought he would have had enough to rinse their full-back if he's just gone around them? Rare off day for the front two as well. Had Austin scored it's a different game but I'm not gonna criticise. However, from what I have seen I really do think Pericard is pap. That said: You have to treat this game with some perspective. It's gone now, so what matters is what happens Tuesday. Win and no-one will remember this. And seeing as though Hudds and Millwall both failed to win, we haven't actually lost out too much. As long as we better them between now and May we're in the play-offs. And it's good to see all the teams bar Nowrich looking as capable as throwing points away as each other. I would have had Leeds, Hudds and Millwall down for a win, so they're all gonna drop points too. Thought Wilson spoke very well after the game. Thing that fucked me off most today? at half-time I overheard someone say: "this is why I don't come very often". I was speechless. In fact today has left me pretty speechless in general. Roll on Tuesday. I cannot bear away fans taking the piss like that. Reminds me of that season we kept getting dicked at home. Rovers, stoke colchester...00/01? anyway, onwards and upwards. I'm still believing... Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Freddies Ferret on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 01:46:58 irene can go amd fvck herself! Sttpid cunt

Soft defending, limp strike force. Not sure how its possible to miss our entire seasons results though ) Looks like Austin has hit a brick wall in terms of his confidence in front of goal. Dont see that being a big problem for him or us long term, just something that he'll have to learn to cope with and iron out. I disagree with this. I think he's had one good chance (yesterday) and two half chances since his scoring 'stopped'. I think that's the issue - we've created less clear cut chances. I don't know whether it's managerial naivety or player mentality, but we just don't seem to have a plan for turning a game around when we go one down. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 12:29:34 Would I be correct in saying we haven't won all season when we've conceded first? I don't know whether it's managerial naivety or player mentality, but we just don't seem to have a plan for turning a game around when we go one down. Something Wilson said post-match was that the players may have an expectation that they will always grab the first goal, so tried to force it and hence left themselves open at the back. We have not won once conceding the first goal, although this has only happened 8 times. Those 8 games resulted in 4 draws and 4 losses, so a total of 20 points dropped from maximum. But we've dropped another 19 from maximum when we've scored the first goal/not scored at all. So I don't think it's much to do with the not being able to come back from conceding first at all. It's worth noting that most of the time (6 out of 8 games) it's been away from home too. Late goals seems to be the problem, which we all know. These odd freak results are just that. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 12:31:16 Bristol is a shithole, thats what puts most off going Mr Gashead. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: leefer on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 12:51:43 This is my input for what its worth.
With attacking fullbacks you are going to get exposed to pace...Cuthbert and Greer were left on there own against Kuffour....thats the gamble you take when Amankwah and Sheehan are bombing forward. We didnt play too bad but there defence blocked everything. A draw on tuesday will suffice as MK and Rovers are running out of games...you always get blips,Saints played Norwich off the park two weeks ago then stuffed Hudders...they got beat at Tranmere yesterday. This result is History though fair due to Trollope as he must love it when he turns us over after we bombed him out as a youngster. We are in a great position for a playoff place and even in defeat yesterday we played some cracking football..i am happy with that. That was until yesterday, after the 4th goal went in I said fuck it and headed back to the County Ground Hotel. Having all those 14-15 year old kiddies chanting "loyal supporters" got on my tits a bit, where the fuck where they when we got relegated a few seasons ago? Any way I left for 2 reasons, a) we were shit and weren't up for it in a local derby, b) I had seen enough and hope its just a "blip" on the radar, the gutless performance up until that 4th goal pissed me off enough to say, see you later I'm off. Let's hope normal service resumes at the Franchise! Gutless? We had more shots than them Gaz. I really don't get this whole "we weren't up for it" bollocks. Sorry but if that free-kick from Sheehan or that Austin chance goes in we go on to win the game. We were well up for it before the scored and it knocked the stuffing out of us. We never gave up either. We still went at them but it just didn't happen for us. I stayed till the end just in the hope that we may see a consolation goal or 2 but sadly it wasn't the case. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Bob's Orange on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 19:38:15 Somebody already mentioned that it was an odd game and it was. Thought we were excellent for the first 20 minutes or so and had we been 1 goal up the game would have been different. Then Rovers scored with their first proper touch of the ball and the game changed. I actually think that we could have been accused of being 'over confident' as we kept playing the ball around, even deep inside our own box. (which led to the second goal eventually). 3-0 its game over really and was goal of the game.
Second half we huffed and puffed and how many times did the ball hit a Rovers player throwing themselves at the ball. Unfortunately I think Rovers players wanted it more, what summed it up for me was when their keeper tipped a JPM shot round the post and his defence were congratulating him as if he had won them the League. Player wise, Sheehan was woeful, Ferry was busy, JPM probably deserved his man of the match and I liked the look of Ritchie when he came on. Lets hope that this is merely a blip and we can bounce back against Franchise. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: STFC_Gazza on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 19:42:08 Only funny part of the day (when it shouldn't have been) was when the fan who chanted RED ARMY (Twat) during the minutes silence for Keith Alexander and everyone telling the twat to shut up and for the Town End all in unison keeping quiet for the remainder of the minutes silence giving the wanker sign to the Rovers fans!
Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: No Longer Posh Red on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 19:43:55 Actually I thought we were far from Gutless, and that one of the few positives from the game was that the players didn't give up, unlike me as I left with 5 mins to go.
The problem was that we simply didn't play very well, too many players just had an off day, not really shite or anything, just a bit off form. The passing just wasn't as good as it has been, and that was all over the team from the defence through midfield up to the front two. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: STFC_Gazza on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 19:45:09 Our defensive game was extremely gutless. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 19:48:22 If Sheehan's free kick is an inch the other way it goes in and we win easy. Did fear the worst when they got a breakaway goal, because Rovers always have a determined defence in the last few years.
Swindon fans are getting used to being a bit more philosophical about it. Its not all just about players slogging their guts out anymore. We try and play football and sometimes things just dont run your way. Losing one game 4-0 wont send you crashing down the league, losing 3 games 1-0 will. Having said that, I have heard Wilson went completely apeshit in the dressing room after, which is what was needed in my view. There were too many passes behind the man, too many loose balls. Too many fans devastated. It was an action replay of the first game. Were the better team, but the game just ran away from us after the first goal. By the way, I was in the home end for that game, and I know a few others who were, and there wasnt that many Rovers there either. Certainly not 5 figures anyway. We'll bounce back. Weve got the class. They havnt. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: Batch on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 20:15:47 Actually I thought we were far from Gutless, and that one of the few positives from the game was that the players didn't give up, unlike me as I left with 5 mins to go. I don't think we were gutless in the traditional sense. We tried and didn't going hiding. But it needed someone to nail Kufour early on, even at the expense of a yellow, and we didn't really mix it up that way. Still as said, one game isn't a concern even though its gutting it was Rovers. Tough month still to come, we will now more thereafter. Title: Re: Swindon town V Bristol Rovers official matchday thread Post by: RedRag on Sunday, March 7, 2010, 20:24:36 Nail him or not it seemed to me that Greer was generally against Kuffour (in the first half at least) and I would have been happier to have had Cuthbert's pace up against him...

Seemed to be more younguns than usual in the Rovers end. In the past their support has been proper old boys. Its always a more volatile fixture because the Brizzle fans seem to have more knowledge of Swindon. Just knowing the names of parts of Swindon, or a backstreet pub can make them a lot more slippery.
