Title: Shit support...
Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 20:44:06
...according to a post on this Udders website...

http://downatthemac.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=36747

You have to register just to read the posts which is ultra gay but is worth doing.

I've got to say that in 25 years plus of going to Town games, I have found our away support to be pretty damned good and pretty noisy. Obviously some games are going to be better than others and there are always certain grounds which we traditionally take loads to and others that aren't so popular. Like Udders in February I suppose.

As some one once said..

..thoughts?

I'd say it is fair comment..our support in terms of numbers is a bit shit.

Normally a team turns to having a go at the opposition support when they don't win. I think they call it sour grapes.

What do you mean though Reg, this season? The last few seasons? Because over the years (a lot of years) I think it's been bloody good.

I must admit, even if I had the time and money to go to today I probably still wouldn't have because:

It's a lot of miles to put on the car.
I couldn't be arsed anyway.

I'm guessing many others felt the same so they probably have a point. IOB is right though, if they're making a massive thing of it, it's just sour grapes for not gaining ground on us.

I remember the time Huddersfield had all the Stratton Bank and the Arkells and tried to buy a lot of the home seat.

Oh wait, no I don't .

I'm not sure why but I've always felt there is something inherently shit in Huddersfield and their ground, mainly that they're a big club but shouldn't be. As a result, no one can be arsed going up there. I mean, we'd take a lot more than 400 up to Leeds wouldn't we, even if it was a midweek game?

Title: Re: Shit support...

About 20 more than we took there.

Our home game was on Tuesday night also.

Hardly any. Which some one, who must have been a Town fan (of the Swindon variety) did point out. But their response was that it was a mid-week game and if the roles had been reversed and the game had been at Swindon today, they would have brought a thousand.

Good for them. Do they think we actually care or something because I sure as hell don't. 5 points ahead of them. I care about that.

I remember seeing alot of Huddersfield fans get wet on the stratton bank when we beat them 6-0 in 1996/7. Peter Thorne hat-trick.

It may be a cheap shot but I feel better for saying it

Title: Re: Shit support...
Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:09:58
If Huddersfield was a few miles down the road we'd have taken more i.e. what a load of hypothetical nonsense.

So it's a midweek game? People can take days off at work. The fixture list gets released early enough to forward plan.

Title: Re: Shit support...
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:18:03
Oh let the ferret buggerers take the moral high ground on fans and we'll just take 4 points out of 6 and a play off position. If they are that high and mighty and given the money they've forked out then they should be doing a lot better than a supposed pile of shit like us. Its a nicer feeling to overavhieve than underachieve.

Title: Re: Shit support...
Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:25:21
I was thinking about our achievements this year. Of course when Danny said we'd be in the play offs at the end of the season none of us really beleived him. He's done a great job.

I can't say I blame the lack of fans at away games, with the way things are in the financial world people are having to be more careful - people are picking and chosing more than they used to. That said, we do deserve a better home support, a season ticket can be had for the price of 3 or 4 away days out.

To be honest, we were relieved that Swindon made 400 up there today.

What were they saying about our support? Im not suprised other teams have started having a go, because our away support is shite for a team in the top 6.

Title: Re: Shit support...
Post by: Rich Pullen on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:57:47
Football is entertainment, fans don't have to go if they don't want to. The days of cheap trains and matchday tickets are long, long, long gone. For example, I don't live too far away from Leeds yet the trip to Elland Road will probably be a £100+ day. I think people will sacrifice some awaydays to take in others. Fair play to those who went today.

We're a small club within the Sky Sports generation: It will only get consistantly good again if we go up into the Championship.

I think expectation has a lot to do with it.  Many of our fans are still pinching themselves that we are in the playoff places and also, are suprised we have achieved some great results against the bigger teams in the division that a lot felt would win this league at a canter.

I can't help thinking that many are still pessimistic about Swindon and to get better attendances and prove our worth, we need to be at that play off final, or better so, get promoted to the Championship.  That in my opinion is the only thing that will get many to come back and realise that Swindon are on the up.

Its a shame, but until many see significant progress and prove that we aren't the "same old Swindon" I can't see much changing.

It comes as no surprise really when most are likely saving their money for trips to the likes of orient, southampton (new ground) and leeds,at the end of the day who gives a fuck what they think,It's just sour grapes from them because they could't beat us.

I thought leeds fan's was bad enough,It must be something in the water oop there.

The fact is there is a recession on (apparently Swindon is the worst affected town in the UK), and it is not cheap to go away.People will choose which games they want to go to, as proved when we took over 2,000 to Brentford. Orient, Southampton and Leeds will be popular, and I can see us taking quite a few to Millwall on our last game of the season.

This year? We only took 1200 to Brentford. I do think we'll take decent followings to Orient, Southampton and Leeds though as you say. And unless we've really messed it up by thw time May comes around, we could even sell out the away end at Millwall. We'll probably sell out the away end at Wycombe too.

I dont know whether the away support woruld improve in the Championship. You get the same old 'new ground' thing for a couple of years.

Bristol City looked like they took less fans to Sheffield United than we took to Huddersfield. If anyone wants to take comfort from that?

Its a shame. Would be nice if the football league took some steps to encourage away supporters. But the way you get treated by stewards at some grounds I would say the opposite is true.

I think the special offers tend to be "Get X free when you travel to Y by train", rather than "Get cheap train tickets when you go to Z". There is an incentive for the train companies there because they lose no money on tickets and may get extra passengers. If your suggestion could work it would be great, I'm just not sure anybody would be willing to finance it.

Away teams used to get a percentage share of the gate in FL games? Train travel is scandalously expensive in this country, an absolute disgrace to the last 20 years of UK governments.

Another factor (excuse whatever) is that quite a few people I know are keen on the snapping up the Town End offer. When you can get a season ticket for £200 or go away for £60 (minimum), the sums dont add up.

Title: Re: Shit support...
Post by: Dr Pierre Chang on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 15:45:04
I haven't seen the comment, but bar a few games in recent seasons, our support has been fairly shit away. In numbers it has anyway, but we always seem to make a decent bit of noise.

I mean, didn't we take 500 to Rovers in 2008? I know it was a tuesday and nothing to play for, but when they came here at the end of last season they had around 2000, whereas we took 1200 (I think) to theirs last season.

I don't know if it will improve, I think Wycombe is certain to sell out, as we did in League 2 on a tuesday and the end of 03/04. Not sure how many we'll take to Orient and Leeds, I expect around 1000 max at Orient and no more than 1200 at Leeds.

It's annoying that Southampton and Franchise are on a tuesday night, but would of thought there would be around 1000 at each of them. Millwall on the last day is hard to predict, I hope we don't have to go their needing anything, as that will be very difficult.

when we took over 2,000 to Brentford.

1.   According to the STFC programme, Town took 1,244 away to Brentford this season.

2.   You are very cheeky to use a name similar to mine.

3.   When STFC played Huddersfield in 2006 in Ibiza to win the Copa Ibiza. Town had approx 30 fans. Udders had about 150 (there are reasons for this which I can expand on if anyone is interested).

4.   I have a teamsheet from the above game (extremely rare) which I am willing to sell so that I can go to the away games at Wimbledon, Brighton & Southampton. Any offers?

That's not actually correct, France and Greece both charge more and I'm sure there are others.

Good effort for those who did go up to Huddersfield, I'm surprised more didn't make the journey all the same.

I think 400 to Huddersfield is poor. I can't really talk tho cos the only away trips I've been to this year are down the road to Rovers and to Fulham.

As a Northern team in a league that is mostly Southern their fans probably take long away trips in their stride more than ours do.

As I've already said, I'm pretty sure we'd have taken more up to Hudds if we didn't have a whole load of Southern-based away games coming up over the next few weeks.

Not getting picky, but - when did you last go to Greece?

A litre of unleaded costs about 1.18 euros and always increases in the summer by 10% for the tourist trade, especially on the islands.

A litre of petrol is just over 1.00 Euro in Luxembourg which apparently is cheap compared to neighbouring countries. I am driving to Eindhoven on Saturday so will see how expensive it is in Holland. Pretty sure Germany is around 1.40 Euro a litre. This could be bollocks!

...and the price has recently gone up due to tax increases as part of the austerity measures their government is bringing in. Along with a civil service pay rise freeze, increase in the retirement age etc. The Greeks don't like that sort of thing, I can see yet more violence on the streets. Hopefully they will eventually pull out of the Euro, get the Drachma back and devalue like buggery. Cheap holidays again - happy days!

The scary thing about Greece and has been for the last four or five years is the Mafia. No dont laugh it is bloody true. Who do you think has been burning all the land around Athens to build new property.

The Drachma will never come back I'm afraid even though the Greeks would love it to. When you go to the markets you will still find fruit and veg marked up in Euros and Drachmas, the local yokels hate the Euro.

PS I flew back from Greece late Monday night and nothing has increased drastically since I visited last year, it will of course and Greece is not going to be a cheap place to go to in the future for holidays which again will kill the economy which is already totally fucked.

I'm going to PSV v Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday. Now PSV Eindhoven have shit support. Went last season at home to Roda JC. Stadium was sold out, and we were nice and toasty thanks to heaters in the roof of the stand!! And you can drink beer in the ground as well!

Roda won 3-2 and the PSV fans only sang just after they scored, it was as if they expected to win (they should have done on paper being top of the league) Roda fans were great and never stopped singing from 1st minute to last (I think even if they had been hammered they would still have sung).

Hopefully the atmosphere on Sunday is a little better, although I expect I will have the hangover from hell as going out in town Saturday night.

Nope, not as far as I am aware OST. We've been able to get tickets both times very easily. Maybe they still have ID cards for the bigger games against Feyenoord and Ajax. That said, there was a large police presence looking after the Roda fans before the game, I know Rotterdam is a bit of a rough place so I am guessing Sparta being in the shadow of Feyenoord might have a bit of a tasty support. We'll see!

I might be totally wrong, but I think that video was about Sparta Prague.

Read somewhere that Sparta Rotterdam are the oldest team in Holland, formed in 1888. Their home stadium is smaller than ours as well!

Random as I went to the Sparta v PSV game in Nov 09 and PSV fans did not stop singing for 90mins, not a peep out of sparta, bar me and 11 mates asking the homes fans for an SSSSSSSSS,  WWWWUUBBBBBUUU,  IIII, N, D, O, N,  Who hate sthe Oxford?  S-Win-Don.   Didn't get much of a reaction and the PSV fans looked confused

I thought you had to get an I.D card to attend any game in Holland  (top flight games anyway) Is that not the case any more?

Nope, although did pre-order tics from UK

Must be the usual away fans with decent vocal support as opposed to the home supporters.

Just back from Eindhoven. Sparta equalised in injury time, the natives were very restless!!

The away section at PSV is very clever. Straight out through a metal tunnel to a train station right outside the ground and to coaches. Seemed like it would be very difficult for there to be trouble after the game.

Got tickets reserved for PSV v Feyenoord on Sunday 11th April. Hopefully there should be a bit of atmosphere in this game!!

IIRC, is that not what they do at Millwall?

If our last game of the season puts them out of the play-offs, those going might want one

Yes thats what they do at Millwall but you still share both london bridge and south bermondsey stations together, the tunnel is at the bottom of the steps at s.bermondsey and come s out at the away end.

After browsing Millwall's forum after we played them I've decided not to go to The Den on May 8th!

The Kevin Amankwaah incident has really pissed them off. Scary club.

You'd really let a reputation and some stuff you've read on the internet to put you off going to a massive massive game like that? I've been to Milwall a couple of times, and unless you're very unlucky or go looking for trouble, you'll be fine!

Millwall is fine if you get the train. I remember going a few years back and having to walk to the ground because the taxi wouldn't take us any closer. That was ALMOST as scary as the walk back to the tube after the game. I'll definitely be going for the last game of the season. Should be a good day unless we royally screw things up between now and then, and I'm sure the old bill will be out in force anyway.

I always thought that it had something to do with Internet Relay Chat. It was as thought Davis (our main user) had a fetish about Messenger or something...
