Snowed up here overnight, has settled but only 3/4 inch or so, so dont think there will be a problem with the game, but might be a bit slippery underfoot.

No reason why they shouldnt be at the moment.

True to a degree, and I think we have a good chance of a win, but 4-0s away from home are not common, even for the top teams in the league.

Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you may end up among the stars. (Nice corny quote there!)

Me saying 4-0 is merely wishful thinking, because you're completely right. I just thought i should make my prediction unreasonably high to look ace if we win 4-0. :)

If we are to finish in the top six, then it's games like this we need to get aresult.

I'm plumping for a three one win but a draw is not the end of the world.  If we go out and compete for 90 minutes then we know Town mean business.

Whatever happens, there's no way it'll match Tuesday night, so I'm not all that excited. I'll gladly take 3 points however they come. If Southend play well I'll settle for a draw.

We struggle against teams like southend (see, stockport).

We'll probably dominate for most of the game, and just squeak through with a 1-0 win.

Title: Re: southend united v swindon town official matchday thread
Post by: DerbyRed on Saturday, January 30, 2010, 13:00:15
I thought Revell was supposed to sign for Wycombe but couldn't because he'd already played for 2 clubs this season (i.e. us and Southend)?

In which case I guess he's without a club currently as Southend released him!

1-1 today.

Title: Re: southend united v swindon town official matchday thread
Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, January 30, 2010, 13:04:32
According to Wikipedia he has now signed for Wycombe on loan till the end of the season.

Apparently the issue was that he came to us on a standard loan, if it had been an emergency loan it wouldn't have counted as one of the two club rule. Though it sounds like they found a way to get round it or made an exception.

Southend's home record and our away record are almost identical (W5 D4 L4 and W5 D4 L3 respectively).  Anyone who thinks they can call this game is a better man than me.  If I had to put money on it, I would go for a draw.

Was thinking exactly the same thing! They better not keep pushing to get it called off.

They left it bloody late for the inspection too, A lot of fans would have already been there by then, What a joke!

I think it looks ok as well. The main thing is that you have cover in all areas with Macklin to inject a bit of pace if necessary and Ward can play up front if needed (please God he won't need to do that)

Attacking options are limited with Macklin the real only choice. Then there is Thompson and the Polish keeper both yet to play 1st team football and Easton and Marshall who have hardly played all season for us. If we are losing with 20 mins to go wont be confident anyone on the bench could come on and get us out of trouble.

Did anyone from the club actually say that or was the Adver making up shit again? (shock horror!)

Interesting to note that Scott Spencer is on the bench for the Blues today.

We had a look at him in the summer, he played 90 minutes in the Hungerford game.

Looked competent, but didn't stand out.

Caddis came on in the 85th min for celtic today, that deal is more than likely dead now i would think, wilson also mentioned in midweek about two others are more than likely dead due to being called up to their respective sides, that now leaves ademeno and one other.I would't expect to much activity from us to be honest.

Ademeno is also being tracked by Saints and apparently held talks with Pardew yesterday according to their local rag.

If we are going to make an automatic promotion slot we would need another team beneath us to hit a good run of form and take points of Leeds/Norwich/Charlton - so we need the likes of Rovers and MK to do well.

We have form in the Play Offs (having won 2 of the 3 seasons we made it there).  Need to focus on establishing a comfortable cushion between ourselves and 7th place, and being seen as one of the sides to fear when it comes to May.

We're not going to finish in the top 2...unless Norwich and Charlton both hit a sustained rough patch.  Statistically, it's like praying for snow in June.  Just about possible, but hardly worth concerning yourself with.

Gotta say I disagree with you on this one Ardiles....

If we were to win our games in hand - 7 points behind Leeds, 4 behind Norwich and level with Charlton.....

With 18 games to go (after 28 games obviously)

That is not much for other teams to slip up in order for us to get up there......

Much more chance than snow in June !!!

OK.  This is where I have to commit to doing something comical and hilarious if we finish 2nd in May.  That way, the Adver will be able to run a piece about a 30-something Town fan painting his arse red & white and running 5 laps of the County Ground pitch naked at midnight after the final game before being arrested and spending a night in the cells.

I suppose there's no harm in dreaming...as long as no one is on a downer in 4 months time after 'only' making the Play Offs (which, incidentally, is not a foregone conclusion.)

I smell the return of the much loved pessimism. We didn't lose, so better than a kick in the teeth. We needed regrounding and to drop a 2 goal lead and not lose is a great way to get everyone, including the team, to stop thinking we're unbeatable. Better that than a loss, worse than a win.

I meerly meant that we conceded another late goal. I'm not exactly saying we are going to lose every other game and get relegated. I meant that if we concede 2 late goals to mid table teams then we wont get automatic. I still firmly believe we have an extremley good chance of reaching the play offs and a point isnt a bad result, but the way we dropped 2 points, thats frustrating.

Prehaps i phrased it wrongly.

I'm more concerned that most of the chasing pack won. If the unthinkable happens against Charlton, we could be out of the play-off positions.

Not enough effort in that second half, but we can excuse them for the occasional bad game.

You have to remember that both Millwall and MK have played 2 more games than us. Our home form is the key factor in us being up there really. 2 home games coming up. I think we can win them both and then everyone is happy again. Really we're in the same position we were in before the Leeds game and another 2 games have passed so that can only be a good thing. I think it's between 8 teams now for the top 6 as Rovers seemed to have slipped out of the race in recent weeks.

Well I am not gutted. In the past I might have been but i'm looking at things more positively this season. Of course, giving away a 2 goal lead in the last 5 minutes is frustrating, but I'm not going to slit my wrists over it. 85 mins (GOAL 1-2 Spencer): Francis curls a 20-yard free-kick on target which is met by a stunning one-handed save by Smith.

The ball flies up in the air, however, and is bundled over the line by Spencer as a handful of players from either side fly in.

89 mins (GOAL 2-2 Baldwin): Scannell wrestles away from his marker before lofting a ball to the far post. Baldwin is there and leaps highest to head home from a couple of yards

Been on, chasing targets, no names given, hopeful by Tuesday but he's always hopeful, so who knows. No interest in selling Cuthbert et al unless silly money is offered.

Dissapointed to lose the two points but not devastated, team a little tired from Leeds game.

team a little tired from Leeds game.

I'm surprised that hasn't caused us more problems before now, there are 9 players that are playing week in week out at the moment and 8 of them have played pretty much every game this season. It has to start catching up with some of them eventually.

Which brings us back to the weak bench and little decent cover throughout the squad. Unless Wilson can bring a few players in it could really hurt us come the end of the season.

The way some are talking, you'd have thought we were hovering above the drop zone! We've only lost 4 times all season and the unbeaten run continues, especially away to what could almost be described as one of our bogey teams!!! Our strikers both got on the score sheet again and I'd certainly take a point at Roots hall!

I'm just glad the game went ahead and didn't add to the games in hand we already have.

Someone asked earlier how many yellow cards Gordon Greer has received this season.

By my reckoning he's only picked up four (Brentford away, Norwich home, Wrexham away and today at Southend).

However, the matchday programme for the Leeds game lists Greer as having four yellows, so today's yellow card would be his fifth if the programme is correct. Which game would Greer miss if the programme is correct? Charlton on Saturday or Oldham on Tuesday? No offense to Oldham but i hope it's Oldham!

Which would mean a return for Sean Morrison who's been very unlucky to be stuck behind two very consistent centre-halves for the majority of the season.

He won't miss any, due to the time of the season it is now 8 or 10 before a suspension kicks in.  Believe that started on 1st Jan.

Just got back. A fantastic start, Southend were all over the place. We didn't look all that solid at the back but they didn't look threatening either bar the odd chance. When we passed the ball around we tore them apart but we failed to make the most of it. At half time the game was far from won. Unfortunately nobody told the players, and we came out completely devoid of urgency and desire. Paynter and JPM both put in good shifts today but most of the midfield went missing throughout the second half and our defending looked very suspect at times. Laurent was about the only decent player in their side - they weren't very good and this was definitely 2 points dropped.

Thank you Ronnie21. Had a delve a little deeper and the discipline situation looks like this...

Jean-Francois 6 yellows
Greer 4 y
Timlin 4 y
Amankwaah 3 y
Douglas 3 y and 1 red
Morrison 2 y here and 1 red (at Yeovil for Southend)
Paynter 2 y
Cuthbert 2 y
Sheehan 2 y here
Lucas, McGovern, Ward, Ferry and Austin all on 1 y.

The improvement in discipline under Wilson has been a 'silent' highlight. We're never going to sing and dance about it but it really could benefit us in the long run.

Been on, chasing targets, no names given, hopeful by Tuesday but he's always hopeful, so who knows. No interest in selling Cuthbert et al unless silly money is offered.

Dissapointed to lose the two points but not devastated, team a little tired from Leeds game.
I thought the transfer deadline was monday or am thinking of something else.

Just got back, Definately two points dropped but we deserved all three without doubt. First half was superb, faultless. Second half we weathered an early storm and should have extended the lead, but Mildy made a couple of good saves.

To the two goals...In my opinion there is no doubt Smith was at fault for the first. Feel free to shoot me down but the freekick wasn't that good, he didnt even have to dive and the keeper should ensure that ball doesn't end up in the dangerzone. Tip it over, wide, anywhere! Lucas in goal and that doesn't happen for me.

Second goal came from a freekick that should have been given the other way for a foul on Ward, and JPM should have cleared his lines instead of shepperding the ball behind when 2-1 with 5 to go. Just clear your lines and reorganise.

Irrelevant of scoreline, it was a good performance. Would have taken a point at the start and although its disappointing to concede in the manner we did, we shouldnt let our heads drop over this, and four points from Oldham and Charlton and we'll still be in great shape!

Front two were superb, particularly Austin, who's overall game and workrate was superb. Also impressed with Cuthbert and Ward, but the full-backs are still the weak link in my eyes and we lack depth, Kev was injured for alot of the second half it seemed but we only had young Nathan Thompson who could fill in.

One final note, the handful who booed at the end are absolute tosspots. I went to Southend just over two years ago when we were on the brink of extinction, and the progress and effort by everyone deserved more than to get booed for a dodgy five minutes. We were still by far the better side.

Behind me, towards the back behind the goal, there were definately as few boos, but irrelevant. Today was far from a disaster, the performance was fine and we were unlucky/careless

Just got home.

I think Southend deserved that point. We got punished for thinking we could defend for 45 minutes, and rightly so.

First half we looked good, with Southend a shambles at the back. Danny Ward was causing hell down the left and the top two as per proved a handfull.

I knew we were in trouble as soon as the players came out for the second half, Southend players were geeing each other up while ours merely stood around waiting for the game to restart.

Ah well, another point on the board I guess, and it'll at least keep us grounded. We should have had that won by half time though.

Oh and a special mention to those twats who were shouting obscenities at Paynter when he applauded us at the end, don't bother going next time, we don't need fans like you. Pissed me off no end that did.

I didn't hear that either, we were cheering BP. I thought the support was excellent today, Southends however was appalling, quietest home fans i've ever heard. The only noise was that god awful amplified bontempi drum that randomly started up in an empty part of the ground. I'd be well embarrased if anything like that was at the CG. Been there before but only at night, and thought in cold light of day the ground was shocking, less said about catering and toilets the better. They did let me out for a half time fag though. The game, 1st half Brazil, 2nd half brassieres, not too down though, point on the board yadda yadda.

just got in and i'm gutted at the result.i thought the perfomance overall was pretty good.we were by far the better side and in no way deserved to be robbed like that.2 scrappy goals and they fucking got out of jail the cunts.
charlie austin is fucking ace.not just a natural goal scorer but his link up play and chasing down was spot on.mom by a mile.
have to big up ltj leshinel too who had a very good game, especially first half where he was different gravy.got skinned a couple of times second half but so did a few of them.
i've said this before but we desprately lack goals from midfield.for all their hard work none of them can hit a cows arse with a banjo.best move of the match ended with ward hitting it near post with the goal begging.3 niland it would have been game over.that said, apart from infront of goal he was excellent.
greers lack of pace was a problem today and his silly foul after getting spun led to the first goal.
overall though we did well and football has a habit of dishing out what you dont deserve.southend is a shit hole, their fans are shit, and the staff at the ground are mutants.

Most other teams around us in the play off race dropped points aswell (bar Huddersfield) and we also have games in hand over most of them, we do definatley need a couple of players before monday though. Not players that will come straight into the first team because our 1st team is perfectly strong but good backup players because our bench isnt strong enough and with a few injuries imo it would decrease the strength of the team.

Our 1st team is strong but if they play 90mins week in week out they will definately start to pick up injuries. We do need to bring in some cover, not just to sit on the bench to to prevent injuries by resting some of our key players.

No we don't. Or not before Monday anyway. Monday 5pm is the deadline for permanent signings, but it seems the ones Wilson has been after and may have missed out on because they're now getting time in their own first teams are loan signings, which we can make any time (until late March anyway). So there is no need to panic and about the worst thing we could do is make some panic signings. I was reassured to hear Wilson say he's not prepared to sign players just for the sake of it - panic signings tend to have more impact on the balance sheet (downwards) than they do on the team sheet

I never realised that, so its possible to bring in loans after Monday, which means there is no need, as you say, to waste money on permenant signings.

Been talking to my brother today and anylysing why we drew. I said to him we seemed to be less effective after manky took that whack early in the second half, certainly dont remember him getting forward again, and both of their goals came from down that side. Wonder if he should have gone off, guess with only Thomspon who hasn't played to my knowledge DW thought that might have been too risky?

I thought Smith was at fault on both the goals, especially the first, but to be fair the entire defence looked a shambles on both of them. Reminded me of last season with the defence turning to shit for the last 15 minutes.

I'm more concerned that we're not finishing teams off that are there for the taking. Leeds was a good example, sure it was a great performance and we won 3-0 but it should have been more than that. The same applies to a number of other games this season. Its not just about the dropped points from failing to kill of teams, our goal difference isn't very good either which could be important come the end of the season.

Austin and Paynter are being relied upon far too much for goals at present, the rest of the team should be chipping in as well and they're not. The midfield are especially to blame, they've scored just 6 league goals all season which is exactly the same as the defence.

All that proves is that the ball was in the vacinity of the goal.

At least the lino was in the right place though, so it probably was a goal.

Doesn't really prove anything. The balls not fully over the line there and there's no indication of:-

a) how quickly Smith's hands, or the ball are moving
b) if that is Smith about to save it, or pushing it away.

Either away I'm gonna say we were cheated and that damn referee cost us two bloody points.

It's just about to be - Smith's not going to push his hands forward before the ball gets to him. It's a goal. Second goal the ball might well have gone out on the byline - see 3rd last pic. But the lino wasn't so well placed to judge that. Don't think we can complain about either decision.

But Smith should probably have turned the freekick round rather spooning it up. Anyway, onwards and upwards.

Agree that Ward had the chance to seal the match.

We battered them first half and could have been 5-0 up. Second half was more even, but we had the better chances, Ward should have scored and that was a bit of a turning point in the game.

Their two goals were just bundled over. But really enjoyed the game. One of the rare away games where I enjoyed the match more than the day out.

This team should be looking for goals throughout the 90 minutes, like Man Yoo do, whether we are 3-0 up or 2-0 down. Weve got so many goals left in us its scary.

Genuinely good support as well. Not enough of that this season.
