Title: The Noughties.
Post by: herthab on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 14:22:20
What do you think this decade will be remembered for? When I first thought about the first decade of the 21st century drawing to a close I couldn't think of much of note that had happened, apart from the usual war and violence shit that seems to happen every decade.

Has it been as meh as I'm remembering, or is it just my memory is going?

I missed that.

Sad maybe, as with all (or most) deaths but tragic?. Tragic to whom apart from Gary Stanley?

I can only remember good sporting achievements, so I'll go for the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2005 Ashes.

Fred's descent into alzheimers will be remembered by most except for, ironically, the man himself.

The recession.

It's not likely to be a decade that will be reflected upon as a particularly good era in the future innit.

Probably the rise of Swindon Town under the leadership of DW.

Premiership Champions 2011/12 with the FA Cup following the next season and the Champions League the season after. Selling Macca to Real Madrid for a staggering £150 million the year of the Champion League win. Ronaldo who!!!

9/11 was a pretty big event!! there are few events through history where you can truthfully say i know what I was doing and where i was when it happened.

Liverpool winning the 2005 Champions league against AC Milan for sheer sporting drama

The boxing day Tsunami will probably rank highly, along with 9/11, and the global financial crisis

Being raped and pillaged by a big fat greek, crap football being played for a lot of the time, getting depressed about "my" team and deserting them, Bushey forcing me back to where I really belong.  And talking of Bushey what a let down he has become, women eh!!  Finding the TEF, taking the piss out of Fatbury/Gazza, Mr Whippy, getting to meet Fred Elliott (memorable, second thoughts!) - oh, there's a lot to remember the noughties for!

9/11 was likely the biggest world changing event, followed the the recession (not so much that it happened but more the way it happened).

The tsunami, although a mahoosive event which will also be remembered was at the end of the day just a natural event that is unlikely to have little impact on the world asides from those affected.

The slow realisation by the major players, that climate change has to be addressed, as Obama said "the threat from climate change is serious, it is urgent, and it is growing."

"Our generation's response to this challenge will be judged by history, for if we fail to meet it - boldly, swiftly, and together- we risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe."

Unfortunately the Hun bred so there are more inbred Huns lined up to take her place for imbeciles to fawn at and to keep propagating the classes. They should sterilize every one of the fuckers - they would still keep shagging each other but at least we wouldn't have to pick up the tab.

9/11 still seems unreal to me...the war in Iraq with Saddams hanging..England winning the ashes!
On a personal level Jan the fat dutch lorry driver with a gold tooth and waring clogs rying to entice me into his passion wagon was a very worrying incident....shook me up for along time.

War on terror, climate change, the rise of the internet and financial meltdown.

This will be the decade when people clicked that globalisation really happened. When people's daily lives were affected by people with sub-prime mortgages in Louisiana*, opium-dealing warlords** in Afghanistan, Wahabi militants in Saudi Arabia*** and coal fuelled power stations in Shanghai****.

Random stuff, thousands of miles away, is connected to your daily life in a new way.

*This is why you can't get a mortgage/got fired
**This is why there are so many parades in Wootton Bassett
***This is why there is such well-funded anti-western terrorism
****This is the biggest new source of climate change

Well, what a fucking numbnut ! Are you a first year student Iffy ? Nothing is really new - it just takes different shapes, forms and guises. But, rest assured, on my death-bed I shall be reflecting on how the Wahabi militants became such an influence in my daily life.

Hammer, feel free to disagree, but don't be a nob about it.

By the way, I think that's your phone. Some prostitutes want picking up from the station. I'm sure they'd be fascinated to hear about your well-thought out views on global politics.
