If it is correct that Southampton are bringing over 3,000, then tonights game will be at least 11,000.

Only when I put the eye drops in, and then it's more of an involuntary reaction to pain, although the missus seems to find it funny so I guess it does have some comic effect. I might see if I can find a stuffed parrot and an eye patch for tonight, go as a Rovers fan and start chucking seats around

We'd better make some noise tonight. I'm not in the mood for standing there all evening listening to the away fans outsinging us for 90 minutes! The Town End should be pretty busy so it'll be up to loons like Fred to get the DRS joining in ;)

When we were at the ground this morning. There were a fans queuing up at the Townend ticket area. Obviously it was Southampton fans trying to get tickets, but didn't notice you got to actually go in the ticket office.
I guessing home end will have at least 500-600 away fans dotted around.

If you compare Saturday to the rest of the league, it wasn't too bad at all. I expected a lot less, and fully expect  < 6000 crowds to be the norm this season.

At Swindon or in League One in general? Finances are getting ever tighter for many so I agree that attemdances might slump - but personally I'll be disappointed if we can't keep an average of atleast 6,500. Last season we had 7,000+ for most games didn't we?

At Swindon...we had 10 sub 7000 gates last season, games like tonight especially early season, will get a crowd in, because of the travelling support, but with little prospect of value for money this season, it's inevitable that gates will tail off.

The gates for the big games, of which there are a few this season should keep the average up, but I can't see too many turning out for run of the mill stuff like HPool Carlisle Stockport etc.

No I don't think we did. Think it was just under 7000 but as a mean average we were over 7000 due to a few high gates like Leeds and Leicester. Our average should be boosted even more this year with Saints, Norwich etc...

Have lived in Southampton all my life but my dad came from Swindon and brought me up to support Swindon.

I hope we beat the Southampton cunts tonight.  All those years at school when i'd take abuse from my mates for supporting Swindon and not Saints.  At least i can say (well for the next 2-3 weeks anyway) that we are higher then that scum in the league

I'm just hoping tonight isnt a big let down and that we win !

I have 3 close mates that are Saints supporters and they have been winding me up terrible in the last few weeks, saying they still think they will win the division despite the 10 points penalty, their fans really do think they are better than what they actually are.

Actually they sound a bit like Leeds fans just not quite as arrogant.

I so wish we could wipe the floor with them tonight and send the 2,500+ Saints fans home in a miserable mood :) and that I can send out 3 gloating txts later!

Hopefully we can exploit them at set pieces as they cant defend them for shit (conceded two goals from set pieces on Sat against uddersfield and one against Millwall on first game of season  + shit load of goals when in championship)

Kieth Scott came over to me and gave me a high 5 after scoring.....I got a fuck off bollocking as I was stewarding at the time!

A sad story before the kick off some old bloke had a heart attack and died in the North Stand half an hour before the game, sadly he never saw us win a game in the Premier League :(

Thank you very much

RTFM.

I'm a bit worried about the second half, surely they (Southampton) are gonna get a grilling from their gafer,
RTFM ? Rolling on the floor masturbating?

No idea. He elbowed Paynter in the head in the first 5 mins, with the lino looking directly at the incident...and did nothing. I think Thomas must like our new home shirt, as he has a hold on Paynter's for most of the match !!

I agree their keeper kept them in the game.
No one had a bad game tonight, all played well, especially Douglas, McGovern & Jean-Francois.
I thought Wayne Thomas was probably their best player tonight in all honesty, OK, he wound our players up, got away with a few things, but he won everything he went for and was a fucking beast.

Great atmosphere, enjoyed that!

That's the sort of game we needed early on, a victory against a 'bigger' team in front of a decent crowd and an atmosphere to boot. Hopefully it won't take another 'big' team to come along to recreate half of that atmosphere, buzz and performance.

Get in! That's exactly how i'd thought we would be in pre-season. Tight at the back but not giving a lot of chances away in open play. Getting one from a set piece and then holding the lead for the win. Great stuff. Have to say our midfield trio bossed the game tonight. Douglas had a great game. Simple passing, good awareness and challenges when needed. Think we'll be sticking with this formation for Oldham and Wolves. We're getting used to playing it now I think.

Also, great atmosphere tonight. Was fantastic being in the Town End amongst it. It's exactly what I have missed over the summer. Just a shame that we won't see it again until Leeds are in town.

Fuck a doodle doo!  Great match, great performance, that is what we will need to do more consistently to finish nearer the right end of this league!

I thought Douglas was class, as was Greer and Paynter but every man in a red shirt played well, and one in a blue!

Atmosphere was the best I have heard at the CG for years as well!

Get in!

Where is that effort every week?  Midfield three were excellent, as were the back four, though a couple of those through balls towards the end were living on the edge!

Lescinel made a horrendous error of judgement early in the second half when he let Fatty Lambert run behind him, but in general they were excellent and didn't give the Saints a sniff.  That "tackle" on Lescinel in the second half was awful and should have been a red.

Paynter was very good, and Macca was brilliant when he turned it on and got the ball where he wanted it.  The new boy worked hard and got into some good positions with some good runs, but didn't seem to have the confidence (skill?) to actually drive it on tand either go past or come inside his marker.

Crowd were good, but where are all those people when we play Huddersfield? What a difference it makes when the crowd are singing for the team, and not picking out particular players or moaning.

That was the biggest 1-0 thrashing I've seen in a long time. Southampton weren't that bad, but we just totally bossed them for pretty much the entire match. 3-0 would have been a fair score and I doubt many Southampton fans would have felt hard done by if it was 4-0, though we could have thrown it away at the end.

How the ref got 5 minutes injury time at the end is beyond me, as is how he then managed to extend that to nearly 7 minutes - I'd say 3 minutes would have been pushing it. Not sure how experienced the ref was but it came across a bit like this was a big game for him (the mighty Southampton) and he went out of his way to do a good job.

Lucas is looking better and better all the time, another couple of excellent saves tonight. The new bloke on loan looked a lot better tonight and has potential - I can see him staying the rest of the season as he really needs the games, there is no way he will be ready for the Premier League this season.

I'd imagine a lot of Southampton fans are realising just how big a challenge this season is going to be for them. That's 3 games gone and they're still 10 points adrift, if they don't get some wins soon it could be a really bad season for them.

what a cracking game it is long time since we can say that are midfield bossed a game Douglas is going to be our key player this season. Got a bit nervy last 5 minutes but we should have been out of sight by then.

VERY happy with that performance, thought we were excellent all over the park.

As others said, the midfield three absolutely took control tonight, each were superb.  The JP from last season is long gone and we have a superb player on our hands now.

The back 4 were brilliant, Lescinel much improved and I'd be happy with them as my first choice back 4 if I were Wilson.

Lucas - great performance tonight.  Made some excellent saves and really commanded his area.

Everything is really echoing the sentiments of others !

Thats a good three points but fuck me Soton were woeful. They were absolute dogshit at the back, it didn't matter if the ball was in the air or on the ground. As already said their no 3 was a complete cunt - gave it but ouldn't take it and should have been red carded for his first elbow on Paynter which was in the box. he should certainly have walked for the 2nd elbow. also agree about the 2 footed assault on Lescinel.
I thuoght every one had a good game. Great header by Morrison. Douglas MOM - he looks as thuogh he could be the midfielder we've been waiting years for.
Althugoh its a win I'm still quite cautiuos. Soton were there for the taking - their players were getting on each others tits and their fans got on their backs a few times. A decent team would have ripped them apart. I think if Paynters header had gone in we would have won by 4 or 5.

When did we sign this McGovern lad?  Cracking little central midfielder, lets hope we don't waste him on the wing.  Seriously, I've never been that down on him, but he immense tonight and was pretty good in an abject performance on Saturday by the team.  Probably helps to have Douglas in there who seems to be exerting an influence.

I think Lucas could be a very good signing, he doesn't necessarily command his box but he controls it with confidence and doesn't let any little slips get to him.  If he misses a cross, he's out giving the next one a good 40 yard punch.  Must give the back 4 a good deal of confidence.

Thought Morrison and Greer did pretty well tonight and Lescinel is growing on me.  He could develop into quite a handy little left back, sort of blossom like Comminges did.  Manky has made the right back spot his and I'm beginning to think this formation is suiting us, maybe just a single striker needed.

Overall, a good old night supporting the Town.  All over them at times, but never far from your thoughts that we could slip up at the end.  Looking a little more positive than last season I think.

That was fucking great.  My 6 year old daughter's first visit to the CG.  She didn't like the first half but filling her up with chips, capri sun and fruit pastilles meant I managed to persuade her to stay for the whole game.

Any comment would just be an echo of everyone else.  We played superbly.  Should have been 3, maybe 4.  Paynter had 2 close range headers excellently saved by their keeper.

Great atmosphere, great to see their players getting well chippy.  Should have seen red a couple of times, but whatever.  As Johnny 72 said, the biggest 1-0 thrashing in years.

Get the fuck in a 10 fold improvement on the previous league matches, the midfield worked properly and bossed the game and the wingers were always an outlet. Paynter ran his bollocks off and by the time he gets a strike partner he's gonna be super fit.
The back 4 are getting better and JFL was finally the player we saw in preseason today and showed he's more than capable of being a league 1 left back. Amankwaah and JFL could prove to be a good full back pairing as both are well built, strong in the air and pretty quick and obviously offer a good threat at set pieces along with Morrison and Greer. With the height we have it must be quite hard for the opposition to choose who should mark who at set pieces I would imagine.

Also there's nothing like losing with dignity and Southampton today showed no dignity whatsoever. Constantly whinging, back chatting, throwing elbows, late challenges they were just a bunch of cunts tbh and even tried to have a fight at the final whistle.

On a side note anyone who's slags our fans off needs to look at the Southampton fans, they were abit of a joke. OK a fair few came but what a bunch of nobs, after about 15 minutes they were booing the team, and in the second half even started singing 'make a sub, make a sub' etc. I wouldn't like to be Pardew, as it looks like instant success or the chopping board for him.

I can't say much that hasn't been said already...

Really enjoyed the game tonight. It was a fairly solid performance with plenty of creativity going forward, and a huge amount of determination to win every ball from the midfield. The crowd were fantastic too - the Town End was rocking and the DRS got involved. It really makes a difference, so hopefully we can replicate that in the coming weeks against lesser opposition.

Southampton remind me a little bit of Forest and Wednesday when they came down. The reason I didn't say Leeds is because they're not quite that bad. They expect to go up even with that deduction. They should know better especially after the last few years they have had. They can count themselves lucky that they have a rich backer and are no longer in danger of going bust.

All players played well but my motm was Amankwaah.   Very composed on the ball, make solid tackles and played a great game.

He also played very well against Franchise.

If he performs like this on a regular basis then i can see a championship side signing him.

Douglas was class too, another player who was excellent on the ball

Take nothing away from town tonight it wasn't so much southampton was shit it's just we (Swindon) never let them play the way they wanted.

We closed players down and generally hassled them when they had the ball.  JPM is like a new signing at the moment and long way he continue in this role whilst he's playing at the effort levels he is.

Douglas is vastly becoming the signing i expected. Great intelligent player.  Lucas too fills me with confidence in goal.

The new lad felt a bit sorry for him tonight think he's trying to hard but i still believe he will come good for us.  The potential is there to see.

Overall great performance from all the lads

Keep it up

Really enjoyable game ...
Some of the one-touch football especially in the first half was brilliant.
We could have easily walked away winning by three.

Question: how the hell did that header from Paynter in the first half not go in, I had a bad view low down in the DRS this evening, what did the keeper stop it with.

Good atmosphere, to be truthful I thought the Saints fans were OK, especially when they were telling Pardew they needed a sub. Now that is something to copy, I thought it was hilarious seeing all the Saints supporters giving the rolling arms bit.

Had a neutral with me tonight who was very impressed with the way we got the ball down and played football.

Macca was good, but JPM and Douglas were different gravy, with Douglas holding it gives Mcgovern licence to run around like a nutjob, something he's bloody good at. Not overly impressed with Tope, he's played too much Prem reserve football, always looking to do to much. The sooner he realises that he's got a split second to make his mind up and do something the better, he overan the ball on so many occasions.

Our work rate and tempo off the ball, both defensively and attacking, was the biggest difference I noticed between this season and last though, unreal hassling and so lively up top and out wide when we've got the ball deep.

Atmosphere was top notch, their fans were absolute dogshite though.

poor ol billy, if we were playing a team without an awesome keeper he'd have had atleast 3. his link up play was awesome and generally pissed off their centrebacks which was nice to see.

soton's cheating annoyed me immensely. Thomas going down under a challenge on the touchline where the ref gives BP a talking to for er closing him down.

obadeyi's late run in the first half he hurdles their feller and the feller stays down with a magical injury. the ball breaks out, he gets up and is suddenly fine.

what an brilliant performance though, i just hope this is STFC of 09/10 and not a blip

went to york road chippy and there were some soton fans saying how they'd paid £1million for thomas, which seems a lot for a footballer who seemingly can't pass or do much but head a ball. to an extent i think it shows that people moaning we should be "emptying the coffers" (as i heard someone moaning to the same fan) and we'll hopefully be a lot more secure and it doesn't always pay off

Pretty fair summary from a Saints forum:

Quote
Tonight was virtually a carbon copy of the Huddersfield game - a shaky defence, the midfield almost non existant and a willing frontline forced to feed off scraps. It's alright having quality strikers like Lambert but pointless if they are not getting the service. Once again tonight Super Kelv saved us from humiliation, make no mistake 1-0 flattered us. Swindon had two fast tricky wingers, especially McNamee on the left and they ripped us apart. They looked comfortable on the ball and moved it around well whilst we were panicky in posession and usually ended up hoofing it forward aimlessly

Morrison's throws are stupidly long now, he doesn't even need to lever himself into the throw that much.

Something Wilson said in his post-match interview makes me think we'll work on this in training. We absolutely need to because we're not putting that throw to good use at the moment. I think we'll see a few goals come from it before too long though.

Players that stood out for me...

LUCAS (I'm so glad we've got him in goal now. He's does dominate his area and reads the game well. Very focussed and can already see him becoming popular with the crowd)

Morrison (good again, great to have a consistent performer at such a young age)

Amankwaah (exploited the space we had down the side and like others pressured Southampton when they had the ball)

McGovern (good attacking, continued form from Saturday, a lot of effort)

MacNamee (great runs as usual, a nightmare for defenders to play against)

Greer (solid, so glad he's captain now not Aljofree) and Timlin also deserve a mention.

Like others have said I'm chuffed with how we were focussed and held on to the lead. But also we didn't just sit back. We were still attacking and putting them under pressure without getting stupid and leaving ourselves exposed at the back.

Atmosphere was great. My favourite bit was when we got ambitious and tried to get the Arkells involved, saying Arkells give us a song then trying to get them to do the Wilsons Red and White Army call and response thing - then when they everyone singing "WAKE UP IN THE ARKELLS STAND"  :D :D :soapy tit wank: :soapy tit wank: priceless.

The problem is that - for years - we have been consistently inconsistent.  It would surprise none of us if the same team played against Oldham and had a dog of a game.  If Danny can get the lads performing at this level most of the time, we'll be OK.

While I wasn't at the game, I will add one comment regarding a player.  JP McGovern has had a cracking start to the season, by all accounts.  He showed so much promise when he first signed, and then drifted.  Now, he seems to have recaptured his form.  We need to keep him playing like this for the rest of the season now.  He could be a key player for us this year.

Overheard some Saints fans moaning like buggery whilst walking back to the car, general concensus was that if Kelvin Davis hadnt played it wouldnt have been unfair if we had scored 5!

Fair enough I thought, I bet Billy is still scratching his head this morning wondering how he didnt score at least one last night.

I take everything back I said about Jean-Francois, the guy's obviously a defensive collossus.... Ignoring the Gills debacle, thats only one conceded in 3, and that was a penalty.

Great performance. This is the midfield weve been looking for. But it only works if everyone keeps at it, 100%.

Our crossing was absolutely fantastic. Should have won 3-0. Their keeper played a blinder.

Lambert should have been sent off for the tackle on Lescinel. Their right winger did the worst feigning injury/get up again I have ever seen at a Swindon game (cheat!).

Every player gets a good review.

Fans have to remmember that just because Southampton brought 3000 fans and have spent money, it doesnt necessarily make them the best side in the league. Its a big crowd and its easy for our players to get up for it. On the flip side, they cant stand losing to us, but we were a far far superior side to them. Just saying that smaller teams like Leyton Orient, Colchester or Gills may well have good sides this year and fans have to patient sometimes.

Southampton looked like a team that have come down and think they are too big for the league they are in.The petulance and whinging from them was very annoying. Also i have never seen supporters singing and making hand gestures for a substitute  :)

All in all good night. If we can keep putting in performances like that we will be fine this season.

I thought Paterson did the two footer on Lescinel? I could be wrong as anger took over - it was a terrible and needless challenge.

Oh come on, trying to get the Arkells singing is pretty ambitious. How awesome would it have been to have all 3 stands singing in turn tho?!?  ;D

I was in the arkells as it was my kids first match and I thought she might be a bit overawed by taking her into the townend (where I usually sit).  It was pretty quiet.  Missed being in the TE.  And I couldn't swear.  That was tested when that right winger did his miraculous recovery.

Anyway.  Wank, fuck, shit, bollocks, cunt.

I feel better now.

A good performance all round, fortunately Lambert wasn't able to take advantage of Morrison's cock-up in the first half, but on another day we could have had 4 or 5 goals - some good goalkeeping by their guy.

Wilson's right though, it won't mean a thing if we don't carry on that level at Oldham. Any news on Morrison's apparent injury ?

i can't get over pardews comments on the saints official website.

Bossed in parts?
Had numerous scoring opertunities?
On top in the second half?
if you'd scored you could have won?

Pardew seriously you were watching a different game.
you had ONE chance where Morison cocked up and Lambert couldn't beat Lucas. that is all you had.

We had at least 3 goal line saves/stops. Your keeper simply kept the score down to one when it could so easily have been 3 or 4.

And for your fans to say there better than us and thinking we are one of the crap teams in this league? well it's another example of big club lower league syndrome. Leeds had it and look where they still are!

Good results and performance, Paynter should have got at least one but oh well we still won...

Lucas very good

ammankwaah played like usual, looked good coming forward
Lescinal did okay, good in the air and cleared his lines well
Morrison and Greer were solid at the back, apart from morrisons mistake in the first half which lambert amde a mess of

Mcgovern worked hard again like always, putting in great tackles, great corner to set the goal up, he is the key for set pieces
Timlin was good all round i though
Douglas won man of the match obviously for a reason
Mcnamee very good on the ball, put some good balls into the box, very good!
Paynter worked hard chasing up front again, should have scored at least one header, but good saves
Obedayi quick, sometimes had a dodgy first touch put was okay

Atmosphere was great also (townend)

taken from a Saints fans site

Quote
We were awful, and I can't believe AP said on the official site that there were some good performances out there and that we deserved something from the game! One good performance from Kelvin - that's it.

Last night was a lesson in pace and movement, Swindon's wingers ran James and Harding ragged - especially Harding because he had no help from Lallana. I know we all agree the quality isn't there and we're in a transitional phase but I've never seen a professional football team so static when they're in possession!

In the first half I remember us winning the ball back on the halfway line and Wotton fed James at right-back....he looked up and there were three Saints players with their feet planted like statues, all about ten yards away from him! The Swindon lads could have had a cup of tea and a fag before telegraphing a pass and cutting it out. So James hoofed it looking for Lambert, a familiar sight at Huddersfield and last night.

And don't even get me started on throw-ins down the right. Paterson, Mellis and Lambert, all stood in a line, not a flicker of movement from one of them. So James gives it short to Schneiderlin, Swindon close down, Schneiderlin goes back to James or Lancashire for an optimistic hoof to no-one.

What with that and defending set-pieces, AP's got a lot to get on with on the training ground!

If we play like that all season we probably would be. However, I'm not booking my Wembley hotel room just yet :)

I must confess I went into the game with a certain amount of trepidation, as I took two work colleagues along - one a Saints fan who couldn't get tickets in the away end, one a neutral, Indian guy who's recently moved to Swindon and me a Rik (the Saints fan) told him he had to come and support his new town. And Rik brought along a mate who's a Liverpool fan. So I was a bit nervous that we might have a mare and that the atmosphere might go flat, as I'd then have months of "You pay to watch that?" etc etc

Needn't have worried, all very impressed. I can only repeat what's already been said by others, but the comments from my colleagues were interesting:
Rik - "Your wingers tore us apart" "We couldn't pass wind" "I wish we had a midfield like yours" "You should have scored a hatful" "Very disappointed with our supporters but yours were great"
Brahmesh - "English football is brilliant. Can I come again next time you play a team as bad as Southampton?" :)

And as it's school holidays, took Joe to see his first competitive evening game. He was ecstatic.

Utterly fantastic night, one of those nights that reminds you why you love football so much, if only I hadn't succumbed to some kind of lurgy to add to my pirate eyes so I could go into work and assert my bragging rights!

That's the plan Ardiles, one step at a time. Good job we took him to his first game last night and not Saturday. So, I fall on the wisdom of the TEF, which game should I take Brahmesh to next to continue the deceit that "It's always like that watching Swindon"?

loving the sky sports take on the match

Quote
Alan Pardew's under-performing Southampton side remain without a League One win after being comprehensively outplayed by Danny Wilson's Swindon, going down 1-0 at the County Ground.

The home side dominated from the off with wingers Anthony McNamee and Jon-Paul McGovern tormenting Saints full-backs Lloyd James and Dan Harding at will.

The hosts grabbed what turned out to be the game's winner in the ninth minute after some trademark McNamee trickery down the right had earned a corner.

McGovern's inch-perfect delivery found centre-back Sean Morrison who thumped a header past a sprawling Kelvin Davis in the Southampton goal.

The Robins should have been 2-0 ahead five minutes before the break when man-of-the-match McNamee's whipped centre found Billy Paynter unmarked five yards out, but his diving header was superbly saved by Davis.

The Swindon onslaught continued throughout the second period and despite failing to get the second goal their fine play deserved, an unlikely point for the visitors never looked like coming.

apparently JPM is now a winger
