Title: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: News Monkey on Monday, July 20, 2009, 17:00:17 Wilson keen to make more signings
Swindon manager Danny Wilson wants to add another two or three players to his squad. http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/swindon_town/8159724.stm Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: redmoonraker on Monday, July 20, 2009, 23:49:30 'got until the end of august to make the signings?' What is he on about, I for one will be worried if we havent got a quality forward or two in by 8th august - paynter on his own up front no thanks!
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: DV on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 13:32:35 Wilson seems to keep hinting towards a one up front different formation.
I personally do not like the sound of that one bit. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Nemo on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 13:36:56 I don't think it will actually happen, I think he's just trying to make it sound like we're not desperate for strikers as otherwise prices will start to go up (especially as the Cox sale price was fairly well known)
Wilson has always really played 4-4-2 and has stated a preference for it here as well. I can see us moving to 1 up front away from home against some of the bigger sides perhaps but not much else. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 13:37:06 I have to agree with DV to pull off a 1 up front you need to have a great ball winning and holding the ball up striker, which I am sorry but Paynter just isn't.
Wayne Allison or Parkin or even Mooney were the last strikers we had that could play that role, Fallon at a push but not Paynter. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: DV on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 13:48:56 Paynter will do an ok job of it. Nothing more, nothing less.
He did the role last season purely because he's a slightly bigger build than Cox. You can tell its not Paynters strongest points but he did it well for the team and it allowed Coxy to be Coxy. If true and he is actually fit then surely getting rid of Barry Corr looks like a big fuck up just about now? Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 13:55:49 Getting Corr fit is fine keeping him fit was the issue
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: jayohaitchenn on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 14:11:11 Forget Corr.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 14:20:56 Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: juddie on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 14:30:49 surely wilson is only talking about using one up front because that is all he has at his disposal right now? I cannot understand anyone panicking about our lack of strikers when the season is still weeks away? If we're in this siaution in three weeks, then yes...
he can hardly play two up top if doesn't have em, and playing with one is not a bad apporach to have on the road. I don't get 'the beef' Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: DV on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 14:38:37 because 3 weeks was at one point 4,5,6 weeks.
soon it will be 2 weeks, then 1 week.... before you know it we'll be off to Gillingham and playing 1 upfront. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 14:54:31 That's not fact is it. We always knew this would be the main area we would struggle to recruit
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 15:38:10 I'm hoping Wilson is just making sure the right option is signed, or the best of what we can get - I'm sure he's working on it and negotiating transfers every day.
If we have to spend a million or so on a striker then what was the point of selling Cox? I think we may end up with a few gambles if we can't sign our preferred targets. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 16:01:30 I think we will go for a journey man type and a young Loan player.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: DV on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 16:02:50 I think we will go for a journey man type and a young Loan player. Yeah at this rate you'll be the journey man and I'll be the 'young' player!! Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Nemo on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 16:03:23 Or Samba could easily be both?
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: juddie on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 16:15:32 I'll reserve judgement until the last day of the transfer market. Lets face it, Wilson has made no seecret of the fact that it's strikers he's after. I don;t see any problem whatsoever with playing with one up front in pre-season, that's what pre-season is for.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: redmoonraker on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 21:36:29 I'll reserve judgement until the last day of the transfer market. Lets face it, Wilson has made no seecret of the fact that it's strikers he's after. I don;t see any problem whatsoever with playing with one up front in pre-season, that's what pre-season is for. the last day of the transfer market (although better late than never) is still not good enough. fitton has already talked about this season and the fact that it is CRUCIAL we get off to a good start (which I agree with). By the end of august thats 4 games or so in, if we only have paynter as striker for those games we are in trouble.(he could get injured aswell - peacock or macklin anyone?!) ok we may not concede many but I cant see where the goals are coming from, so if we went 0-1 down in a game we may suddenly find it difficult to get back into it. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 21:45:04 I'd prefer us to start with just Paynter and look at the loan market later on then panic buy and reduce our budget when we need to get another replacement at Christmas.
We seem to be doing a lot better at signing a better calibre of player so far this summer than we were last, so I'm willing to keep the faith for now. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:15:18 Agree Ben
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Arriba on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:20:00 but are we going to win games with just paynter upfront?
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: 4D on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:28:03 Last season seeemed to be a case of scoring a couple of goals per game but conceding 3. Next season as it stands could be a case of watching many low scoring/conceding games (hopefully I am wrong). Obvious I know, but we need to score goals and surely we need to strengthen there.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: RobertT on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:32:34 No shit sherlock. I presume 15+ a season strikers are being released at a rate of knots by clubs around the Country but we are just not interested in them.
Given the summers track record for potential calibre of signings, I'm more than happy to have faith in the Management team who have made it abundantly clear that we need at least 2 more strikers. Hardly a desire to go with a one up front. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Arriba on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:34:41 i dont want, like anyone else to see panic buys.but it is blatantly obvious we need at least 1 striker of quality and sharpish.i dont care if it's a loan but we need one nonetheless.
easier said than done,i know. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: 4D on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 22:59:46 agree
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: stfctownenda on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 10:47:02 I still don't understand why having brought unproven players like Spencer and Samba on trial that we did not bring Dean Bowditch down for a look, think he would be worth a punt even as a 3rd or 4th choice striker. I still however have faith that Wilson has a couple of great strikers up his sleeve and will secure them in advance of the first game.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: BANGKOK RED on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 10:49:47 Strikers are so 2008
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 11:08:09 I still don't understand why having brought unproven players like Spencer and Samba on trial that we did not bring Dean Bowditch down for a look, think he would be worth a punt even as a 3rd or 4th choice striker. I still however have faith that Wilson has a couple of great strikers up his sleeve and will secure them in advance of the first game. I'm not sure that Wilson has much of a record for getting good strikers. It might be interesting for someone like DV to do a bit of research, but I think Georgi Hristov at Barnsley was one of his...he of the Yorkshire women were beer swilling pigs quote...Lee Miller at the Shitheads...comical missed header at the CG. Clive Platt at MKD, bit of a donk. Richie Barker at HPool, did a job I suppose. At Sheff Wed he got shot of Di Canio, and replaced him with er nobody I can think of, although Juan Cobian got a few games. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 15:17:21 we'll end up playing a FM style formation, the christmas tree 4(DEF) 1(DM) 2(W) 2(AM) 1(ST)
O O O O O O O O O O O Something like that Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 16:15:05 we'll end up playing a FM style formation, the christmas tree 4(DEF) 1(DM) 2(W) 2(AM) 1(ST) O O O O O O O O O O O Something like that Which way round are we playing? Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 16:25:16 either way haha, but above is top is striker bottom is GK
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 16:51:40 either way haha, but above is top is striker bottom is GK I like the look of the other way round :) Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: leefer on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 17:16:38 Now ive been impressed with how the club has been starting to get a grip...the signing of Douglas and Lucas was top notch...Cuthbert to but ive got to say that not getting a striker or two is going to cost us unless DW gets one very soon...Paynter only has to get injured v Gills then we are knackered...lets face it Fitton and co have known for months Cox was going so IMO it should have been first on the list......even if we get a striker next week weve seen in the past(Shearer and Fjortoft) how hard it is to settle in the team.....so i for one is very dissapointed not to have at least one striker braught in...though i think we need three...it dosnt matter what formation or style we play..as i said injuries at LGE 1 level isnt uncommom and we need strikers whatever the formation.
Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 17:32:08 Why is everyone so worried?
All the players Wilson have brought in over the summer have been decent, or at least appear to be. He's obviously waiting to find the right strikers rather than bringing in a couple of donkeys that we get stuck with for the next few seasons. Sure the start of the season is getting close, but he'll find someone in time - even if it is a short term loan signing. I don't have a problem with Paynter up front on his own, the concern is whether the midfielders will be able to chip in with a decent number of goals to support him. Title: Re: BBC News: Wilson keen to make more signings Post by: grubby on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 17:55:11 I was also worried why we haven't got any strikers in yet. But after last night at TCG I'm not so worried. DW will get a couple in time for the start of the season but is not rushing. There are so many professionals out there at this time that they do not need time with the squad to do a job for STFC!
