I think the media is to blame as they constantly crave doom mongering stories and people living in fear.

Seems to be spreading fairly quick in swindon (40 schools) and the first person died here today. I know its all media hype n stuff but i cant help but worry about my son, no one wants to see thier child sick especially if they can help it. It's school holidays soon so he would usually go to holiday camp with hundreds of other kids but i might turn into an over protective mum and get someone to keep him at thier house whilst i work

The amount of Tamiflu that is being dispensed at the moment is phenomenal; anyone with a bit of a sniffle or a sore throat is given the stuff. The rumours are that it doesn't work anyway, it's just a gesture from the Government/PCTs so they are seen to be doing something. Pretty expensive gesture at £20+ a box.

Whatever flu I had, I didn't use medication to get rid of it.

Serious reply to Miss angry

My daughter (6 years old) has had it. Nasty bit of flu, not pleasant at all, however not worth the hysteria that surrounds it - providing there are no other underlying issues there should be no long lasting effects (such as death!! among others). In the case of my daughter, she had flu like symptoms: Severe headache; very high temperature; blocked nose; sore throught (other symptoms to look out for include aching joints, sickness, dihorrea). We couldn't keep her temperature down using the usual (Calpol and Neurofen) so took her into the clover unit at GWH where they gave her tamiflu (concealed so as not to cause alarm - these are the depths of unfounded panic some have found themselves in). The tamiflu has worked and she is now back on form.

In short: It is not a nice thing for a youngster to have but in the vast, vast,vast, majority of cases it is not much worse than good old normal flu. In my experience the hardest bit was keeping her quarinteened for the required period after she had recovered - 6 year olds are not designed to be locked indoors and can drive you to distraction!

im one of the people with underlying health issues, we have been given a lecture this morning in hospital about what to do etc.

brighton seems to be avoiding the worst of it as yet.

I'm worried for my 10 month old. He has suspected asthma (very unconfirmed though) so I hope he avoids it.

Stupid thing is, if they had said 29 people had died from normal flu I'd be half as worried, even though it is just a serious. Didn't really think I was that susceptible to media speculation  on how serious it could be.

In the last major fu outbreak it killed 40,000 people in the UK. That was just over a decade ago.

My 12 year old has had it this week.  Anyone worried shouldn't be unless there are other health factors to take into consideration.  As soon as she started taking the tablets she started to improve.

My son has asthma so that was our only concern.  Kept her in her room and him away from her and all has been fine.

It's not about this wave though, they already know that this one is relatively mild.

Rightfully a Health expert attacked the media yesterday because they are just putting front page headlines which make people panic without backing it up, for example saying 29 people have now died in the UK without stating whether they had underlying health problems so the NHS hotlines are jammed with people who are thinking the virus has mutated and is killing lots of healthy people.

Its like when the GP died last week and he had tested positive for swine flu they whacked it straight on the front of most pages without having any facts, then after the post mortem it was proved he died from natural causes.  Did the paper post apologies, did they fuck.

As the Health expert said the papers are more happy to print about the 29 that have died compared to the 55,000 that recovered fine.  Our media are cocks and should be put back in line, I hate them.

FWIW, I think they've trod a fine line between the two pretty well, they've given out factual information about the possible scale of the threat, but not overblown it. If that's been then overblown in the Daily Mail et al, well, no surprise there

Update on my "bubonic cold" as pauld put it: My paranoid wife made me speak to NHS direct this morning. They asked me some questions about my symptoms, I basically described a cold (sore throat, runny nose & a little bit of a cough) and they said I *might* have the virus so they recommend I stay at home "just incase anybody around me at work has underlying health conditions".

My (pregnant) missus has the same symptoms and now has herself so paranoid she's gone home from work to be in isolation. I really don't get it. Ok, we're both concerned for the baby's health and if she's got the virus it'd be understandable, but it's not even confirmed. They even told her that I have to go to the Chemist to pick up her prescription so that she doesn't come into contact with anyone else. So, is she supposed to stay at home and not come into contact with anybody for the rest of the pregnancy "just in case"?

That's the exact problem with a 'helpline' approach. They can't possibly take a chance of saying 'it's a cold' just in case something bad happens.

If that's going to be the approach adopted, the country will grind to a halt in about a week. Now excuse me while I buy all the canned goods and bottled water from Tesco.

I developed a sore throat, achey limbs and a slight fever yesturday. It hasn't gotten any worse in 24 hours since. I've not gone to the docs or anything fucking daft like that. To me its just a cold and I took a couple of paracetemol. However if this is swine flu then i'm really not overly concerned. Obviously I would rather the missus didn't get it, but if she does I would not be alarmed. Apparently it's temperature that causes problems in pregnancy when ill, so she will need to control the fever by keeping her temperature down and take on plenty of fluids. Plus, if she does get a mild strain of it now she won't get it later on or during labour. Then she can pass immunity on to my child.

What if that's what the kid ends up looking like?

It's doing the rounds at my work. Quite a few people have been off this week with "suspected" Swine Flu anyway. So could just be some random bug. Needless to say half the office has gone into panic mode for no reason.

Without wishing to be overly cynical, Swine Flu is the ultimate skive opportunity, diagnosis purely over the phone and it's not possible to get a Doctor's note, plus nobody will want you in even if you have a mild sneeze.
