Title: The plague is coming. Post by: BANGKOK RED on Sunday, April 26, 2009, 16:51:33 Quote National public health bodies are co-ordinating their work to prevent the spread of a new swine flu virus, the World Health Organisation says. . Mexico has reported 71 deaths but "we don't know how many are new swine flu infections," Dr Keiji Fukuda said http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8019566.stm I do hope that bacon sarnies don't get too expensive. Title: Re: The plague is coming. Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, April 26, 2009, 17:06:07 I'm surprised at this, I thought the scare story cycle would go for Asteroids or Giant Solar Flares or something else spacey before we had another flu effort. Surprised and Disappointed. Space is cooler than germs.

Quote There have been no confirmed cases so far in Europe. Chris Clarke, a British businessman from Northampton, had a false alarm when he began to feel unwell after flying out of Mexico on Friday. He told BBC News: "I was watching the [BBC] News channel last night - clearly the story was escalating. I have two young children so I am conscious I don't want to bring anything back. I called NHS Direct. "They said there were lots of things that could cause my symptoms but said I should be seen by my local practitioner and asked me to call my out-of-hours service, which I did." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8018887.stm Mind you, I might be able to blag a week off work because of this if I play my cards right. Title: Re: The plague is coming. Post by: pauld on Saturday, May 2, 2009, 08:46:47 Whatever happened to SARS eh? See, that's the problem with your modern scientific experts, just not prepared to stick with the pandemic they've got, if it doesn't take off and lead to massive piles of bodies in the streets in the first couple of months they get bored and move onto the next one. Not like the old days, then they really knew how to do pandemics - look what happened back in 1917-20. Bit of a slow burner, granted, took a little while to get going but did the scientific experts back then just get bored, give up and sulk about waiting for the next trendy pandemic to come along? No they did not, they rolled their sleeves up, got stuck in, worked with what they had and within a couple of years they had a lovely pandemic, killed millions right across the world, piles of bodies in the streets, the whole works. But you tell that to your modern day scientific experts and they just roll their eyes at you and sulk off to their rooms to ring the Daily Mail with another scary quote. Bah, scientitic experts these days, expect everything served up to them on a petri dish

Title: Re: The plague is coming. Post by: STFC_Chris on Thursday, July 16, 2009, 22:11:53 The amount of Tamiflu that is being dispensed at the moment is phenomenal; anyone with a bit of a sniffle or a sore throat is given the stuff. The rumours are that it doesn't work anyway, it's just a gesture from the Government/PCTs so they are seen to be doing something. Pretty expensive gesture at £20+ a box.

My daughter (6 years old) has had it. Nasty bit of flu, not pleasant at all, however not worth the hysteria that surrounds it - providing there are no other underlying issues there should be no long lasting effects (such as death!! among others). In the case of my daughter, she had flu like symptoms: Severe headache; very high temperature; blocked nose; sore throught (other symptoms to look out for include aching joints, sickness, dihorrea). We couldn't keep her temperature down using the usual (Calpol and Neurofen) so took her into the clover unit at GWH where they gave her tamiflu (concealed so as not to cause alarm - these are the depths of unfounded panic some have found themselves in). The tamiflu has worked and she is now back on form. In short: It is not a nice thing for a youngster to have but in the vast, vast, vast, majority of cases it is not much worse than good old normal flu. In my experience the hardest bit was keeping her quarinteened for the required period after she had recovered - 6 year olds are not designed to be locked indoors and can drive you to distraction! Hope this helps Title: Re: The plague is coming. Stupid thing is, if they had said 29 people had died from normal flu I'd be half as worried, even though it is just a serious. Didn't really think I was that susceptible to media speculation on how serious it could be. In the last major fu outbreak it killed 40,000 people in the UK. That was just over a decade ago. Post by: stfctownenda on Saturday, July 18, 2009, 13:17:52 Scare mongering? So you'd rather they say nothing and hope it just goes away? Rightfully a Health expert attacked the media yesterday because they are just putting front page headlines which make people panic without backing it up, for example saying 29 people have now died in the UK without stating whether they had underlying health problems so the NHS hotlines are jammed with people who are thinking the virus has mutated and is killing lots of healthy people. Its like when the GP died last week and he had tested positive for swine flu they whacked it straight on the front of most pages without having any facts, then after the post mortem it was proved he died from natural causes. Did the paper post apologies, did they fuck. As the Health expert said the papers are more happy to print about the 29 that have died compared to the 55,000 that recovered fine. Our media are cocks and should be put back in line, I hate them. Title: Re: The plague is coming. They asked me some questions about my symptoms, I basically described a cold (sore throat, runny nose & a little bit of a cough) and they said I *might* have the virus so they recommend I stay at home "just incase anybody around me at work has underlying health conditions".
My (pregnant) missus has the same symptoms and now has herself so paranoid she's gone home from work to be in isolation. I really don't get it. Ok, we're both concerned for the baby's health and if she's got the virus it'd be understandable, but it's not even confirmed. They even told her that I have to go to the Chemist to pick up her prescription so that she doesn't come into contact with anyone else. So, is she supposed to stay at home and not come into contact with anybody for the rest of the pregnancy "just in case"? Title: Re: The plague is coming. Apparently it's temperature that causes problems in pregnancy when ill, so she will need to control the fever by keeping her temperature down and take on plenty of fluids. Post by: Spy on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 10:29:25 Without wishing to be overly cynical, Swine Flu is the ultimate skive opportunity, diagnosis purely over the phone and it's not possible to get a Doctor's note, plus nobody will want you in even if you have a mild sneeze. That's true but what if you claim to have it and have the week off then actually get it afterwards. That could look a bit bad. Title: Re: The plague is coming. Title: Re: The plague is coming. Post by: pauld on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 19:43:34 There's a kid at my youngest's nursery got it apparently. So given that the youngest is the finest carrier of diseases of all forms known to man that'll be all of us laid up with it, just in time for my first full week off since Christmas next week.
