Title: Favourite Bands
Post by: Doore on Sunday, March 22, 2009, 23:49:05
Simple survey - if its been done before, I apologise.  Favourite 5 bands/artists.  In order.  I love lists.

1.  The Beatles.

2.  The Stone Roses.

3.  The Who.

4.  Manic Street Preachers.

5.  Billy Bragg.

(I'm only 24 by the way, but am a stauch "they don't make them like they used to" believer)

1. Early Pink Floyd (up to Wish You Were Here)
2. Talk Talk (surprise!)
3. Siouxsie and the Banshees
4. The Clash
5. Early Humble Pie - Performance (Rocking The Fillmore) has to be one of the best live albums ever

1. The Stone Roses
2. The Smiths
3. The Fieldmice
4. Camera Obscura
5. Oasis

Top 5 lists of bands are a bit hard though really, but the Smiths and Roses are constants for me.

1. Blink 182 (and associated projects like BCR)
2. Oasis
3. David Gray
4. The Undertones
5. Frank Turner

Queue up that count down tune they used to play on the radio. dooo-do do do do-doo doo-doo doo-doo. Propellerheads?

Staying still at number 5...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/flammableben/HA6776.jpg
I dreamt I had long hair last night. Not that I ever used hairbands when I did. But I might if I grow it long again.

A re-entry, up 2 at 4...
http://www.riderz.co.uk/images/bandana.jpg
...The bandana. Here modelled by a person made of glass or water or something.

Down 1 at number 3 we have...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/flammableben/Elasticbandball.jpg
...The Elastic Band. Flicking, rolling, stretching, chewing, the all round super band.

Losing the top spot after 3 weeks at number one...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/flammableben/managed-broadband1.gif
Broadband! Somehow represented by us all about to be crushed by giant hands! Broadband will eventually lead to all our deaths :(

This weeks number one... It's a surface with only one side and one boundary component...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/flammableben/FOW7LVVN3YEWZM4WXYMEDIUM.jpg
It's the Mobius Band! Make a model of one with a bit of paper! Amaze yourself by following it round with a pen. Cut in half lengthways and be astounded by the results! Marvel at all it's potential mechanical and engineering uses.

I put far too much effort into that.

I put 2 singles artists in my "bands" list, oops.

Add (at the moment) Girls Aloud. Yes that's fucking right, Girls Aloud. And Sublime, who ought to be in my top 5 anyway.

Title: Re: Favourite Bands
Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, March 23, 2009, 14:52:09
Alkaline Trio are the only band I can listen to alot without getting bored of them, well their stuff from the 90s anyway.

Most modern favourite band is probably British Sea Power. I can't be bothered to narrow down anything older than that into a favourites list, which probably defeats the object of the thread, but meh, screw your list.

Chemical Brothers
Massive Attack
Dire Straits
Jurassic 5
Abba

Are Jurassic 5 really a band? Beastie Boys is a bit more understandable considering they can all play something (and play it well), and have done on records. Pharcyde would be acceptable too.

I'm not having hip-hop in my five. In order, best first:

Radiohead
Genesis
Cornershop
Kings Of Leon
Arcade Fire

Indeed, Cornershops 'Lessons learned from Rocky I to Rocky III' is an absolute true barnstorming classic.....

Manics
Killers
Polyphonic Spree
Meat Loaf
James.

I could list 20 easily. And eveyone else has clash and jam so i'm omitting them.

If being able to play an instrument is one of the criteria, then my list reduces to 1. :(

Most of the time he's been either with CS&N or Crazy Horse, so guess he can sneak that through.

Fair enough, I prefer the C,S, and N without the Y.   Might upset Adje though.

I'm off to see him in Nottingham in June. Saw him last year at Hop Farm and he was superb. He's still an angry old bastard at 63 and long may it continue.

Title: Re: Favourite Bands

1. Dire Straits (Knopfler should knock off the artsy-fartsy stuff and start rocking again)
2. Shads (Wouldn't have all the later guitar heroes without Hank Marvin)
3. ELO (By virtue of "Time")
4. Traveling Wilburys (Roy Orbison, couldn't that guy sing!)
5. Booker T and the MGs (the Colonel is the man, re. Blues Brothers)

There's some great bands currently (even though I'm an old git), Killers, Coldplay, etc, REM are always worth a listen.  Blondie get an honourable mention, well ahead of their time.

Boomtown Rats were fun.  In the early days of punk, the "Rats" spat on the audience who spat back and at each other.  I claimed a Geldof flob at a concert when the Rats were just breaking into the charts.

1. Pink Floyd
2. Bon Jovi
3. R.E.M
4. Muse
5. The Killers

A whole hatful of honourable mentions including Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastien and Manic Street Preachers, but that's just getting greedy.

I would have honourably mentioned Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets, owing to the sax player playing on his back and the piano player playing the keyboard with his arse, but they were from somewhere near Cardiff, hence they don't count.

That was a great gig-despite the weather and car park debacle."A Day in the Life" was worth the entrance fee alone
