Title: Gordon Greer
Post by: michael on Thursday, March 19, 2009, 00:09:23
If we do try and sign him do you agree that the stipulation should be that he brushes his hair and has a shave?

He is very scruffy and his appearance sets a very bad example for young players and fans alike.

God knows what would happen if we played Hull City and Phil Brown saw him looking like that.

I think we're still recovering after Steve Jenkins to be honest. He's clearly to blame for leaving some kind of dirty gypo legacy.

DANNY Wilson has set his sights on securing the long-term signature of Gordon Greer, once the centre-back helps Town successfully stave off the threat of League One relegation.

The 28-year-old is currently on a three-month temporary spell at the County Ground from Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers, and has been such an influence since his arrival that he is currently captaining the side.

But, with the defender out of contract at his parent club in the summer, Wilson believes Swindon will be one of a number of teams trying to get Greer to put pen to paper.

“He’s had such an impact in the club that I think it would be foolish not to be thinking longer-term,” revealed the boss.

“At this moment in time I guess Gordon will just be trying to get the games under his belt - which he came for in the first place - and then play as well as he possibly can and see what options are available to him at the end of the season.

“I think anybody who looks at the contribution Gordon has made and doesn’t think he can be an asset to us in the future is a bit foolish.

“His leadership and the way he has helped turn things round in terms of the defensive work has been fantastic.

“As far as I’m concerned I would like to do something long term, but it’s a little bit early to do anything at this stage from Gordon’s point of view.

“As Gordon would say himself, there’s still a long way to go yet and I’m sure he won’t be satisfied until we get ourselves safe in the table.”

Greer led Town to only their third clean sheet of the season on Tuesday night with a superb performance alongside fellow defenders Kevin Amankwaah, Sean Morrison and Jamie Vincent.

That rearguard have now started four consecutive games and, for Wilson, consistency in selection is going to be key if his side are to avoid the drop.

“It’s important that people understand and feel comfortable with each other in those back positions because it’s obviously a main part of the team,” he said.

“And if they can play together for as long as they can then that understanding will become second nature.

“But it’s consistency that I’m looking for.

“I don’t like to keep chopping and changing teams.

“I want my players to go out and feel that they can just walk on to the pitch and know exactly what their teammates are going to be doing.

“Changing things has been a necessity at certain times, but in an ideal world I would like to keep it as settled as I possibly can.”

Can't imagine that other L1 teams will want to sign someone who looks so messy.

Take pride in your appearance Gordon and you might get a decent wage in these times of global economic downturn.

He's been pretty solid from what I've seen, mainly alongside Morrison. If I stop taking the piss for a second I wouldn't mind a Greer Morrison back 2 next season. It would be nice to have some solid back up for them though. Not some unreliable cunt who needs someone reminding him to breathe in case he collapses and lets their forward through on goal.

I agree. We need someone who is an better all-round defender, as whilst Jerel's pace and strength are great attributes, his distribution and concentration are not good enough.

He may well do but there's a chance to come here and get regular first team football as a captain. He's enjoyed playing here and he's even admitted that himself. The only factor to stop a move would be money I guess.

I know that an English club, such as our own, cannot officially until his deal expires.

Oh, so it means Scotland.

I think its only players in your own league you can't offer a pre-contract to, so a Scottish club could to a player with an English club. But that hasn't happened has it, someone would have said something by now - its not like they're a secret or anything.

I can't see him going there for footballing reasons. Possibly for money, but provided we offer him something decent I'm sure we could tempt him - plus he'll be captain and playing every week. We really need to push the boat out and get him to stay, I reckon he's our best player after Cox and will give us something solid to build around.

Fitton or Wilson said a month or so ago that they'd already made it clear to Greer that there was a contract waiting for him at the end of the season. I'd be surprised if they hadn't been talking with his agent for a while now.

I reckon any competition for him will come from another League 1 club, same as with Cox.

Yep. He was well chuffed, something which I thought was great to see. Yes, it's annoying that we've been crap this season but to see players like Greer, Smith, Easton, Paynter and Cox looking as delighted as us with the result was great.

I really hope Greer stays. He's been a huge part of the changes that Wilson made and made our defence look infinitely better

Ummmm....relocation perhaps? Used to being up north..

He turned down a contract extension at Kilmarnock (who were in the SPL) for Doncaster (who were in League 1).

If staying up north was important I doubt he'd have come here on loan for a few months, seems that playing regularly is more important to him and that he doesn't mind it down south too much (even Doncaster is "down south" if you live in Scotland).

Considering he's still their player, Doncaster are perfectly within their right to field him - They were facing a relegation run-in when Greer joined us. However, his loan spell coincided with Donny finding good form so, it's not as though Sean O'Driscoll is preparing a 3 year deal. Greer has indicated that he wants to leave aswell.

My concern is that we're all (well a lot of us) building this up to be a big thing, then if he goes elsewhere for better terms/location it'll be a 'lack of ambition' slag off.

The Board will have their idea of worth, and won't break the bank. Who's to say, regardless of his impressive spell, that we couldn't find someone else as good ?

Not quite:). however, the piece on him being in the Doncaster side this weekend suggests that he'll come here because he keeps saying "we're" as in "we're safe", so he still feels he's part of our squad, well thats what i got out of it.

What are tha chances of getting that Tudor-Jones fella to boot?

When he arrived he had been out of the side for a good while and hasn't featured for the Sheep bummers much (if at all?) in the Chumpionship.

Whatchooooo think Willis?

I like him he breaks up play gets box to box he has been lacking lately mainly due to easton running round like a headless chicken leaving him to do 2 jobs

Going back to Greer, im pretty sure he will sign. Wilson must be pretty confident as he wouldnt make a loan player whos only going to play 10ish games captain. He will sign :D

Tudor Jones is a better and taller version of Easton.

I think he's shown glimpses of quality, but an abundance of shiteness. His freekicks are woeful, as are most of his attempts at passing.

If we can't/don't get OTJ then im sure wilson can get easton back to his best over the summer. albeit otj does giv us extra height in the box.

Mentioned it in another thread but he's been released by Doncaster.
