Title: Getting a credit card... Post by: DMR on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 00:51:54 ... If you go in and see someone at the bank can you get one there and then (OK, so they have to post you the card but say 2-3 days then you could actually spend) or does it take longer?
I have no money. And my halls rent is due. I fear homelessness. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: yeo on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 01:06:45 Ive never got one by seeing someone at a Bank.
Apply online, theres bound to be Student deals. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: DMR on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 01:09:14 But I need it immediately.
Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 01:22:02 It's a really dangerous game using credit cards when you're a student, especially in your first year (I assume you're still in first year). I'm still paying all that shit off. Naturally you think you'll sort it out when you finish uni, but by then it's too late.
If you can't pay the rent now, you may struggle with the repayments and the interest will rape you, unlike your interest free overdraft. When does you student loan come in? Is it possible to get an advance from your parents and make something up about buying loads of books? Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: DMR on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 01:41:13 End of April next loan cos of the wanky laste Easter.
And I've already spent the parents rescue money twice over (one for "books" and one for "cricket tour" which I am actually going on but not paid). :/ Title: Re: Getting a credit card... I suppose you could get a credit card and make sure you pay it off when the loan comes in. You won't keep on top of your repayments or interest otherwise. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: LucienSanchez on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 09:00:15 I'd advise opening another student account with tasty interest free overdraft, thats how a few of my mates got round financial issues for a bit. Then they had to work a little bit to gradually pay it off at weekends/between terms.
Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Foggy on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 09:04:05 Dave,
Sell something on Ebay until Easter, look at it long term mate, credit cards will fucking ruin you. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Sussex on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 09:35:13 Dave, paying for everyday expences (this includes rent) on a credit card is a very bad move.
Beg mum and dad to get you out of a hole, one last time, and think about where you're pissing your money away.. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 09:35:53 Is this to pay for toilet breakages?

Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Batch on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 09:40:31 I just switched credit card after Capital One tried to stiff me for 22% on purchases.
I was amazed how easy it was, apply on line, they check the electoral role and the credit card turns up ready to go (too just over a week). No signing anything in ink at all, except the new card. However as you are a student I doubt the process will be as quick. Firstly you aren't going to be on the electoral role at your current address, so I'd imagine that'll delay things for a start. That's it - I don't think you'll get it as quick as you need. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Cards and PINS are issued centrally so that they don't arrive at the same time. 7 day wait minimum. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: nevillew on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 13:00:32 Good time to be a student really, with an interest-free overdraft and 2% loan etc, with a bit of luck when I come out things will be on the up again. Can't help but think some of you are being a bit naive though saying your job/company is safe, Ring any bells ? You're on a slippery slope . You need to get it sorted, quickly. You've got two fines against you on the files, about to go into rent arrears. How are you going to get accommodation next year? Do you think people don't take this into account ? A credit card is the last thing you need right now. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Rich Pullen on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 13:03:44 In my experience, housing in university life is far different than outside said bubble - as long as landlords get their money they couldn't care less about a students financial past!
Although I don't know DMR's situation - my student loan installments covered rent. Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: STFCBird on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 13:15:31 Get a job! I've had to apply for a second job because we are skint!

Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 15:29:09 Get a card Dave but just make sure it’s not in your name. If you’re in student accommodation there’s likely post arriving for residents long since departed.
Have butchers at the post pull out half a dozen names that have long since gone and apply for said cards in their name using the old electoral register to fill in the gaps. Out of the six or so you’ll apply for the law of averages will probably mean that one will hit fruition and away you go. Just don’t make all of the applications to the same company and raise the old alarm bells! Remember CC fraud is handled by banks and not the police and it’s got to be pretty hardcore to be referred to the boys in blue. If you get a bit twitchy use it as a cash card (watch the CCTV), empty it and job done. The victim may not ever find out and if they do they can (with evidence) eventually get it written off. Victimless crime - see! I shouldn’t really be encouraging you should I? :D Title: Re: Getting a credit card... Post by: DMR on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 15:31:10 That's fucking brilliant. Stroooood posted about it a while back. I've made about £800 but I've been too lazy to continue or not had the cashflow. I think STFC_Manc has made loads more than that though. Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 18:47:53 Credit cards are fine as a short term measure, especially with 0% on balance transfers and other such offers. Unless you're a muggins you can swap your balances about for a bit, and it won't cost you a thing. Only advisable if you're sensible with money and know for sure that you will pay them off at a fixed short term date.
I see you've now solved the problem, but in my experience it takes a while for CC's to get to you, and be operational. I needed some short term cash last year and got 3 credit cards delivered a couple of weeks after I'd found better solutions. You'd think that with the irresponsibility of the banks/firms involved they'd special delivery them to you on the day of application. Or instead of spending money on drinks, you could nick them off the side. A cheaper alternative to coke could be icing sugar. Baby teething powder. Looks identical and numbs the mouth so the fools think its good char. |
