Title: Byrne Staying On Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, December 12, 2008, 07:16:45 Quote ANDREW Fitton has hinted that caretaker boss Dave Byrne could have a long term future at the County Ground, no matter what the outcome of Town’s marathon managerial race. Byrne remains a contender to succeed Maurice Malpas in the Swindon dug out, although recent results appear to have dented his chances. However, Fitton believes continuity is crucial to ensuring success in Wiltshire, and admits he is unlikely to appoint a manager with a sizeable coaching entourage. Asked if Byrne would be kept on under any new boss, Fitton said: “I would like to think so. “Dave has done a good job with the youth team and brought some good players through, and that’s an important part of the job. “He has been very unlucky in that he has made some bold managerial decisions in his short time in charge, and they haven’t quite paid off. “Unfortunately for him the team seen to have developed last-minute-itis, or whatever you want to call it. “But I also think it’s wrong to allow managers to just come in and clear out the backroom staff, because it destroys continuity at the club. “People like our physio Dick Mackey, and the kit man, Roger Jones - their contribution is invaluable. “These are the people you need to keep hold of.” Byrne has made it perfectly clear he wants the Town job on a full-time basis, but says he would not hesitate to accept a role as number two to any new appointment. “I don’t want to leave Swindon Town Football Club – I’ve made that perfectly clear to the chairman and the board,” he said. “If that means that I drop back into the coaching staff, then so be it. “The one thing the new manager will have is my 100 per cent backing. “The fact that I’ve gone for the job, he may feel there’s a threat coming in from behind. “I wanted the job last time but I knew deep down I really wasn’t ready for it. “But I still gave Maurice my 100 per cent backing.” Should Byrne be shown the exit door under any new regime, the former head of youth insists he can leave with his head held high. He continued: “If a new boss comes in with his own backroom staff it would leave me with a P45 and looking for new job. “But that’s the business that we’re in and the business I’ve chosen to come into. “I’ve introduced the youth system here back into the world of youth football and we’re now up there with the best. “There’s scouts coming to look at the kids that have come through – Sean, Joycey, Tozer, Lukas, Callum, Chris Allen. “We’ve put Swindon Town back on the map and we’ve got assets – valued assets who are worth money. “So I must have done something right. “If I do leave Swindon Town at least I can walk away with my head held high, and say I’ve given it my best shot.” http://www.thisisswindontownfc.co.uk/news/headlines/3970820.Fitton_hints_that_Byrne_could_be_staying_on/ Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Batch on Friday, December 12, 2008, 08:29:41 Quote “But I also think it’s wrong to allow managers to just come in and clear out the backroom staff, because it destroys continuity at the club. Ten again, it can slow the new managers effectiveness if he isn't allowed to bring in the team that he trusts and has brought success elsewhere. Nothing against Byrne staying, but as long as it's not at the expense of missing out on a good manager. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: herthab on Friday, December 12, 2008, 08:33:31 Hopefully Byrnes position will be Reserve Team Coach. Nothing against the bloke, but I would expect that the calibre of manager AF is (Supposedly) chasing would have a number two at the minimum.

Good news.

Bowel function is the single most important characteristic of any future manager at Swindon Town. The rest us are already full of enough crap to cover any conceivable requirement in that department. Good news. When are you and DB announcing your civil partnership Paul? Are we all invited? ;-) Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: pauld on Friday, December 12, 2008, 08:50:28 Agreed. I've started to warm to Byrne. Can't think why........... There should be a category in "Managerial candidates Top Trumps" for "Window Licker wind-up factor". Byrne gets a 10 straight out of the boxTitle: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: pauld on Friday, December 12, 2008, 08:51:13 When are you and DB announcing your civil partnership Paul? Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: wheretherealredsare on Friday, December 12, 2008, 09:19:25 Here's a snippet that could be hard to digest. Ian Harte may relinquish his monthly contract at Blackpool to take up an offer of player manager at Swindon Town if the current caretaker manager agrees to work with him. Andrew Fitton is considering whether Harte/Byrne would be something the fans could stomach.

Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: herthab on Friday, December 12, 2008, 09:26:55 Ian Harte? Is he just a player at Blackpool, or does he have a coaching role?
(I know this is all bollocks, but it's another slow day at work) Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, December 12, 2008, 09:30:20 Just signed and on a month to month playing deal, i hope this is not Whoosh case Steve

Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: overthehill on Friday, December 12, 2008, 10:55:14 And the next match to be featured on TV Burp
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: glos_robin on Friday, December 12, 2008, 11:45:25 Hopefully he just goes into a scouting role like King has at Plymouth. Obviously has an eye for a player but doesn't seem to really be upto the coaching side of the game.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 12:36:07 but doesn't seem to really be upto the coaching side of the game. On the basis of what? I feel sorry for him because before he was so bloomin' rude to assist his managerless employers, he was an integral part of the coaching set-up - helping us compete with academy sides at youth level. He's not right for manager, but as a coach especially within the youth team - I'd happily see him stay. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: flammableBen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 12:39:25 I think Fitton and co should give Byrne the club as a christmas present.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 12:44:40 I think Fitton and co should give Byrne the club as a christmas present. What a gesture that would be. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: nevillew on Friday, December 12, 2008, 12:50:03 David Byrne walks into a club... (sorry Sussex)
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: fatbury on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:08:07 I personally dont want Byrne here anymore .. particularly after his comments about fans this week. If Fitton is that keen to have him here he might as well appoint him and manager as no one of any repute will work with him.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: flammableBen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:12:22 I personally dont want Byrne here anymore .. particularly after his comments about fans this week. If you're going to state things like that as fact then you've got to back them up. You've got 10mins. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Tails on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:12:44 Sturrock wanted to.
He's a good coach, a passionate man and he cares about this football club. I hope he stays. He was spot on with what he said about our 'fans' as well. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: overthehill on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:15:13 How would his role be as a sweeper
:D Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Tails on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:19:00 soapy tit wank.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Power to people on Friday, December 12, 2008, 13:40:47 I've no problem with Byrne staying as a coach with the youths....as long as the new manager has a choice to keep him or not if he wants his own team he should be able to have them unlike Malpas who was given the job on condition he worked with the current staff.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: DV on Friday, December 12, 2008, 15:42:52 I dont mind Byrne staying on at all and I've been a supportwe of his.
However, I dont like the sound of 'the new manager probably wont bring in an sizeable entourage' I hope this means the new guy will bring it one or two and not the new guy will bring no one in with him ....because that was a total fuck up last time! Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 15:57:26 Depending on stuff, I'll be very suprised if Ady Williams will be here for much longer - therefore new guy will pretty much have to bring someone with them.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: DV on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:05:46 As people keep saying. I would be happy enough with Byrne and Bodin staying on as Reserve and Youth team boss.
Letting the new manager bring in an assistant and 2 or 3 coaches of his own. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:07:04 Does a league one team need 7 members on the coaching staff?
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: DV on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:11:22 Byrne & Bodin + 2 or 3 the manager brings in doesnt = 7?
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: flammableBen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:12:27 Byrne & Bodin + 3 + the manager + assistant does though.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:13:44 I'm guessing that it won't be a big coaching staff....
1. New Manager 2. New guy as Ass Man or Coach 3. David Byrne 4. John Glanville 5. Paul Bodin Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: DV on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:14:47 by dave said coaching staff.
Does the manager count as the coaching staff? Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Sussex on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:15:07 David Byrne walks into a club... (sorry Sussex) Apology accepted. Thud. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:16:31 Unless he's one of the managers that has no involvment in training at all then i'd class him as part of the coaching staff. Perhaps non-playing staff would of been a better phrase.
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: DV on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:18:49 Either way, we were obvious best under Sturrock when we had him, Summerfield, Blackley, Byrne, Williams (sort of) & Granville, thats 6!!
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:48:34 Byrne should be gone for the sin of being sent off at the CG for bitch slapping Shaun Close....all this shit about loving the club...he's only been here 5 minutes. Loves his wad more like.
There is room for a small amount of sentiment in football....like Maurice Owen, who when finished playing had some sort of job at CG until he retired...wages clerk, groundsman, coach etc. Maurice though had fought Johnny Jap Foreigner in the jungles of Burma before giving nearly 20 years of playing in crap Town sides of the 50's before sealing a promo in his final season 62/63. Look at a photo of the squad that won the Anglo Italian Cup amongst the concrete detritus of Napoli...who's got the biggest smile...Maurice Owen that's who, because he did love the club. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:50:34 'ark at he.
Bad day at the office Reg. Byrne can have a liking for the club after 2 years, of course he can. Times have changed since the days of Maurice Owen and his dedication is up there with only a couple of others... with complete respect to yourself Reg, I can't help but think that it's an unfair comparison. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, December 12, 2008, 16:52:16 Reg has been googling all day

Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:17:42 Reg has been googling all day Wish I had the time mate...I'd rather Byrne came out with something like I get 2.5% of all transfers over 500K on any player I scout or develop...good for the club and good for me. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: JOHNNY REEVES on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:19:55 i couldn,t afford new socks anyway credit crunch and all that
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:21:18 I jest reginald. Agree fwiw. Easy for people to mix up love of the game with love of a club

Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:31:18 I jest reginald. Agree fwiw. Easy for people to mix up love of the game with love of a club I'm not taking it as a dig... but if you want to :-* and make up see Si Pie as he does tongues. I don't mind Byrne staying as he seems to have an eye for a young player...just annoys me, all this love the club stuff. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: STFC_Gazza on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:36:23 Byrne has been loyal, could have left with Sturrock but stuck with it, i think his loyalty deserves some sort of reward but if it say is the difference between a good manager coming and a great manager coming then....
Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: glos_robin on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:50:57 Was he offered a job with Plymouth when Sturrock left, if he was then fair enough but he has only been here 2 years and I don't really see that as loyal. Has he really been offered any other half decent jobs anywhre to test his 'loyalty'? Again if so fair enough. People like Dick Mackay who have been here years fall into the bracket of loyal....
If he does remain then as others have mentioned there is still a need for a few new coaches and a decent assistant manager to the new man. I would definately get rid of Granville and Williams at the very least as I fail to see what they offer to the club. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: STFC_Gazza on Friday, December 12, 2008, 17:53:19 Was he offered a job with Plymouth when Sturrock left, if he was then fair enough but he has only been here 2 years and I don't really see that as loyal. Well.. Byrne told our table that he was offered a job with Sturrock at Plymouth and was offered a job at QPR but turned them down to stay at STFC at the shirt sponsors do last season. Title: Re: Byrne Staying On Post by: pauld on Friday, December 12, 2008, 18:37:13 Was he offered a job with Plymouth when Sturrock left, if he was then fair enough but he has only been here 2 years and I don't really see that as loyal.
