Title: Swindon V Scunthorpe Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Saturday, November 1, 2008, 06:02:38
Really not expecting anything from this game. As long as we don't play like twats, I'll be reasonably happy..

Considering we went there last time and won courtesy of goals from Ricky Shakes and Trevor Benjamin, we might be able to nick something. I'm not hopefull though.

A draw to carry on the unbeaten run would be good.

Just saw the Southern Premier table this morning.  Supermarine top and my local side, Farnborough, third.  Would be quite interesting to see either in the Conference South.

I'd be delighted with a point today.

We're gonna win this. I can see it being a bit of an eye opener of a result. It'll be a clean sheet and something like a 2-0 or 3-0. Although in another thread i think it said 3-2, so got a few bases covered. :)

Spud old son, its all due to the licencing rights fro transmitting games on the web through Premium TV (i.e. effectively forcing you to sign up to STFC World if you wish to listen online).

7 points out of the last 3 is a bloody good return against any sides, but with Oldham and Scunny in there, that's fantastic. I hope those who'd been pointing out our previous bad run was relegation form will acknowledge the last couple of weeks has been promotion form. And no, I don't think either is likely.

I quite agree, but we have to temper euphoroia with a bit of reality.

I'm thinking Coxy is the first player since Bill Stephens in 46/47 to score 2 away league hat tricks in the same season, although I haven't checked it.
Dennis (Bullets) Brown scored 2 in successive seasons, which is rare enough....his 4 at Bormuff, a fond memory as I was there. We sold him soon after...

Missed Pen probably cost us and Cheltenham away he missed a hatfull...not knocking him just saying it works both ways, the defence still looks shaky but its starting to look good, lots of praise for MM,the jury is still out about him but that was a great result today.
As for Leicester i cant wait...lets hope our fox bangs in another hat trick.

Just got back....

What a fucking game! Fantastic for Cox to get his second hat trick in under a monthj. Our fans were quality today. even when we weren't down they kept singing COME ON SWINDON..... I see the pessimists have decided to fuck off from away games. GOOD .

Phil Smith was simply fantastic today, kept us in the game with his shot saving. The real Phil Smith has returned?

SWINDON FANS V STEWARDS AND COPPERS.... well as some mentioned it kicked off in the away end. What happened was Joe Murphy the Scunthorpe keeper had some words with the Swindon fans who then went up to him and a load of stewards and coppers who were extremely heavy handed took some bloke out and it kicked off with punches etc flying but I believe only 2 people got thrown out. The stewards are twats. The police said after the game they were reporting Murphy to the club to report to The FA.

Anyway 3 points and pints for £1.65 you can't go wrong! UP THE TOWN!

Video of Simon Cox Penalty to come....

Sadly Gazza you only get 1 point for a draw, even when away to the league leaders. :)

Glad you enjoyed it. It sounded a cracker from the radio. I think the negativity has lifted now we have started to play well. I think largely the same people are going but can now see the effort being put in so are supporting the team. And rightly so, long may it continue.

Technically, no.  The much unloved county of Humberside was abolished in the local government reorganisation of 1996.  The territory that used to fall within its boundaries now, for the most part, forms parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

This, of course, will be of no comfort to your other half.

I'm sure they would appreciate that.

I think you can still get a Thamesdown bus in Swindon.  Same sort of thing.

Seriously, Larwood (never realised you were a Doris, by the way) I hope your fella makes it out quickly and with the minimum of fuss.  Can't have been a pleasant day for you.

Sounds like things just boiled over. I guess to get anyone they'd need the CCTV and if it shows the stewards/coppers dishing a bit out first may work in his favour?

At least it's only Scunthorpe and not some dodgy prison in Turkey. I'm sure he'll get back fine. On the bright side, you won't have to cook him dinner tonight.

However. Set pieces - its been said time and time again, but we really need to improve on our defending.

Also, Hertha I left you a present in the back of your car, hope you like ready salted crisps!

Also said the paynter pen was a bit soft.

We've been back an hour or so now - ref was awful yet again.
Great display by team, Cox was brilliant as was Phil Smith.

I thought the stewards and police were heavy handed and needn't have gone in like they did.  I felt they weren't interested in calming things down and were looking for a fight.

Their goalie Murphy was a disgrace and I hope he gets what's coming to him - mouthy arrogant git.  The police said he is being reported.  If enough people complain then hopefully he will be really in the shit.

Can't remember the incident for the first goal, you're right on the second, never a free-kick and couldn't see if the last was offside as it was up the other end of the pitch. Paynter penalty was soft, never saw us getting that.

TBF Paul, having dug ourselves into a deep hole, we needed something like this, our current form is staying up form and no more. We're still only 3 points away from the drop zone, so still plenty to do.

Histon has all the makings of a nightmare.....Leicester should be fun.
Woosh! The point I was making was that both reactions are equally over the top. We're no more likely to get promoted than we are relegated this season

Chicken, you've just read that Mr. Larwood is a nutter or a wannabe nutter and you're shitting yourself in case he comes looking for you! :D :D

Sorry to hear about the arest Larwood, not uncommon though at away games, I've had the pleasure of being chucked out on more than a couple of occasions when I did absolutely nothing but defend myself and also detained once by the cops for knocking a guy down who was throwing punches at my head. It's easy to say it's not their (The fans) fault.

Just as it's easy to say it is.

Didn't really see what kicked it all off, but let's not pretend the police and stewards waded in for no reason. People may have got caught up in it by accident, then again the supporters may have overeacted as much as the authorities did.

From what I saw it was a total over reaction by the stewards, who I thought were looking for trouble and the police, person to blame imo is Murphy, I hope he gets charged, incidentally great performance by Town.

Thoroughly enjoyed my day out yesterday :)

Great performance from the team. I think we've definitely turned the corner, Leicester will be the acid test.

From what I remember, it kicked off like this: Murphy was time wasting so some Swindon fans were giving him some stick. Stewards pick one bloke out for obviously saying something a bit naughty, then 30ish fans rushed forwards. A couple went over to Murphy to give him some mouth and two stewards legged it in from the other end of the stand and literally grabbed one (probably innocent) bloke and dragged him out. Cue mayhem. Swindon fans got a bit argy but were pushing people around at worst then stewards come flying in with their fists as do the police - some with batons drawn.

I don't condone what the Swindon fans did, but the stewards and police certainly didn't help the situation.

Just seen highlights on Virgin.  Lovely second goal from Cox, looks like gamble to play Macca away worked as he was involved in some decent build up play for 2 of the goals.

I might be a little harsh here but for their second goal I would question the keeper, to be beaten near post is a bit annoying, but that's only if I'm being really picky.

Looked like a decent day away.

Dear Sir,
I am writing in response to your article "trouble at the match" in respect to the Scunthorpe United V Swindon Town match at Glanford Park Saturday.

I was at the game and the situation DID start with Joe Murphy taking too long to kick the ball. The article did however fail to mention that Murphy had said something to the Swindon fans which the police after the match confirmed the keeper would be reported to The FA and to Scunthorpe United Football Club.

The article was written in such a way that blamed Swindon Town fans. It failed to mention what part the stewards, police and Murphy himself had been a root cause for problems escalating.  The article also quoted “STFC Gazza” blaming Swindon fans for the problems. I am actually the person in question. I noticed how you failed to note that I had actually stated that “the stewarding did nothing to ease the situation between the fans and Murphy however I am not sure what was said but I would probably say Swindon fans were not totally innocent either. Swindon Town fans behaved impeccably up until that time and sat down when the stewards requested. Not once did Town fans lash out at stewards or police until the Murphy incident. "

After the Murphy incident it appeared as if the police and stewards started assaulting the Swindon Town fans however I cannot confirm for sure whether this was the case however BBC radio apparently said the stewards were heavy handed and a steward had punched a Swindon Town fan. I know this because a mate text me saying "Radio are saying it’s kicked off with stewards punching a fan"

Stewards are there to protect the fans and ensure safety at games. The behaviour of the stewards was shocking. They should have stepped in there to try and calm tensions down with Town fans and Joe Murphy the Scunthorpe Keeper not jump in and start a shoving match with the fans.
Fans were actually encouraged by the police after the game to report Murphy and the stewards to Scunthorpe United FC and Swindon Town FC who can then raise a complaint to the relevant people.
It would be useful to get facts correct before blaming and pointing the finger at Swindon fans. Yes Town fans played their part no doubt as they were involved but there is no way this incident was initiated by the travelling Town support.

I noted none of your photos in the article showed stewards or police being heavy handed only fans being ejected as I am sure it makes a better story and sells more papers.

I in no way condone violence at Football. There were women and children there and the Stewards should have done more to ensure a family atmosphere at the ground instead of retaliating and causing more problems instead of trying to ease tensions.

Swindon Town have no history with Scunthorpe United and to not mention the key point about the stewarding or lack of is poor.

PS What's your favourite cheese?

I love this quote

Quote from: Advuurrr
The incident saw angry words exchanged and fights get out of hand.

Quote from: Scunthorpe Tribunalgraph
In Saturday's game, Scunthorpe Stewards were more than happy to allow controlled fighting between the Swindon fans.

Things took a turn for the worst though, when one Swindon fan took it upon himself to use a loud voice and call the Scunthorpe Goalkeeper by his name repeatedly. With the stewards now noticing one Swindon fan brandishing a snooker cue and another holding what could only be described as a flaming chainsaw, it was clear the fighting was now getting out of hand.

That's not wholly true. I had a call from Ben Perrin yesterday and told him basically what you'd said Gaz - ie that from my understanding what had started out as a comparatively small incident of verbals between fans and the keeper had been escalated out of all proportion by heavy-handed stewarding. But as I wasn't at the game, I wasn't prepared to go on the record about it, having not seen the incident myself or (at the time) spoken to first-hand witnesses. So albeit they couldn't get direct quotes, they could have reflected what they were actually told in their "the Advertiser understands" bit. Fair play to you for complaining, hope the retraction does you justice.
