Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:11:32 Ummm not sure, my house is spotless and no damp whatsoever! Theres quite a bit of greenery about outside though! Mosquitoes like to breed in damp places...ditches, ponds, swamps etc. with climate change we seem to be getting these warm wet summers which mosquitoes love. As Swindon gets increasingly concreted then more low lying areas are becoming prone to flooding, and so damp areas. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: michael on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:12:34 Fact of the day: STFCLady does not like Marmite, and certainly does not have it on toast.
Mosquitoes don't like Marmite either. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: axs on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:17:09 maybe that's why i never get bitten.

Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: michael on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:20:50 Supplementary fact of the day: Guinness Marmite wasn't quite the "limited" edition it was cracked up to be, as all breweries skim the top off their ales and send them to Marmite.
It is called 'yeast extract'. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:22:40 i didn't think we got them in britain? are they becoming more frequent due to global warming?
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 20:22:49 I'm just glad we don't get Tsetse flies here, but it's probably only a matter of time.

Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Luci on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:05:07 Well they were mosquito looking and the bite hurt.
In the words of Basil Fawlty "Amphibious landing crafts" :D Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: yeo on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:07:07 Latin name: Culex Pipiens
Size: Approximately 8mm long Distribution: Found throughout the UK. Months seen: All year. Most frequently from June to October Habitat: Always near water, including ponds, ditches and water butts. Food: Larvae feed on tiny organic particles in the water. Adults will feed on animal blood. Special features: There are over thirty different species of mosquito found in the UK, and they can easily be confused with similar non-biting insects. The main features to look out for are the long pointed proboscis, and the wings, which are held folded and flat when at rest. The males have bushy antennae. The females need a blood meal before they can lay their eggs, which is why they bite humans. They will also take the blood of frogs and birds. The eggs of the mosquito are laid in still water in batches of up to 350. Each female can lay up to six batches in one season. The larvae are aquatic, and float just below the surface of the water, allowing their breathing tube to draw in oxygen. There are two main groups of mosquitoes; the Anophelines, and the Culicines. The larvae of Anophelines float horizontally just under the surface of the water, while the larvae of Culicines hang vertically just below the surface. After about seven to ten days the larvae pupate into little comma-shaped creatures. They hang tail down below the surface of the water and breathe through two tubes on the top of the thorax. After about five days the adult mosquito emerges. Did you Know? The mosquito is the most dangerous animal on the planet to mankind. It has around half of all the humans who have ever lived. In warmer countries they can transmit malaria, parasitic worms, yellow fever and other diseases. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: yeo on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:08:03 Hey are you pregnant Lady?
Apperently they prefer pregnant women, something to do with the breathing. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:08:50 i have read about the risk of them becoming common here as the planet warms up.but i had no idea they had arrived already? Mosquitoes have always been here, just not the species that spread malaria yellow fever etc. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:11:37 Mosquitoes have always been here, just not the species that spread malaria yellow fever etc. there is a lake about 150-200 metres from my house.guess i'll be a victim of them sooner or later. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Luci on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:12:52 Hey are you pregnant Lady? Apperently they prefer pregnant women, something to do with the breathing. I can confirm there is absolutely no way that is possible :D I didn't have myself down as a heavy breather! Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:40:18 What you need for mossies apart from a net to sleep under, are mossie coils.
These resemble the rings on an electric cooker, and you burn them a bit like incense. I always take a couple of packs when I go camping, just in case you find a dodgy spot. There's an ace place I know in N Wales...where a fella owns a large chunk of the Mawddach estuary near Barmouth, and uses it as a campsite....it's just a bit wild, and mosquito laden. The coils come into their own. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: THE FLASH on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:48:20 get a repellant with DEET in it.superdrug own label worked in Skiathos this year for me and the missus.............Bot flies....now when they start flying through Old Town run for the hills!
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 21:55:31 i've never seen one. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 22:22:07 Maybe Lady's mum is pregnant
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Batch on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 06:59:19 My legs got covered in bites playing 5-a-side at the Oasis.
I can confirm I look a bit pregnant. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: nevillew on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 07:09:04 I thought this was another OF holiday helpline thing.
Sadly, as they're attracted to sweat, me in a hot climate = all mossie leave cancelled. Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 07:30:13 seriously if you live in a mossie area, go to pharmacy and buy yeast tablets, take one a day, you will not get bitten, i stayed in guatamalan jungle for 6 weeks and did not get bitten once thanks to the yeast.
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 07:31:37 Lot's of mozzies here but they pretty much leave me alone for some reason, they love a good munch on the misses so. She must be more tasty than I am.
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 08:56:04 fleas and mossies always bite me. i've got my antimalarials and deet stuff for tanzania. yeast extract sounds much better but i'm looking for more of a guarantee against contracting malaria so will have to suffer the side effects of malarone.
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: dell boy on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 09:03:57 Lady: mosquitos like nice smelling things (perfumes, aftershaves, body lotions) - in Greece the three main ways to avoid being bitten by little sods is to 1) not to use too much of the said body lotions (just stink a bit). 2) the best way to avoid bites is to cover your body in vinegar, you might not get kissed much, but you wont get bitten either and 3) very important, never scratch and open the wound, the smell of the infection attracts mosquitos like nothing else (if you get bitten on your foot and you scratch it, be assurred you will get another bite very close within a few hours).
Title: Re: Mosquitoes Post by: Luci on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 10:17:11 Ohh must have been the perfume then and scratching the bite is not something I plan on doing, yuk!
