Title: Barry George
Post by: michael on Sunday, August 3, 2008, 09:53:02
Good to see justice done here.

Just because you're a weird-looking stalker, it doesn't mean that you are a killer.

Apparently he was stalking someone else at the time anyway.

Hysteria always seemed to be the guys downfall... He was clearly never the mastermind behind what was essentially a professional execution.

Abit like that guy that the Sky reporter reported to the police for being going above and beyond to help people during the McCann case (it must be him!). Fulham has a local nutter - it's definately him

The writing was on the wall for him with all the TV and press coverage. To quote Homer Simpson "...listen to the music Marge, he's evil!"

Indeed - instead he's going to be a very wealthy convicted rapist.

He was stalking another lady at the time, so he could not have been stalking Jill Dando ... not safe to be allowed out on his own. Didn't know he was rapist as well.

As a line of defence goes, it's up there with that fella who claimed he hadn't murdered the young model, "just" found her dead body and raped it.

Some crimes should carry a life sentence...he got 3 years for rape!.....glad justice was done and he got another 8 years!

Well, hopefully, if he's publicly confessed to stalking someone in a separate offence from the one for which he was (apparently wrongfully) convicted, the authorities will investigate that and he can be prosecuted and, if rightly convicted, jailed for it.

But surely he would have already served any sentenced given

No, separate offences. That was my point.  He's entitled to claim compensation for the time he wrongly spent in jail, but he can't offset it against another jail sentence (if any). Think about it, just because you've been wrongly convicted of one offence, doesn't mean you then get a "freebie" to get off with another.

I'm sure the vultures lawyers are circling to help him out.

What is truly amazing is that the Government will probably ask for bed & boarding costs for his 8 years  spend inside, though his compensation should take this into account.

What a record this nutter has .... it can only be a matter of time before he strikes again!!

In 1980, after a failed attempt to join the Metropolitan Police, George posed as a policeman having obtained false warrant cards. For this, he was arrested and taken to court, where he appeared in glam rock clothing and stated his name to be Paul Gadd, a revival of his Gary Glitter fixation,[5] and the name under which he was charged. At Kingston Magistrate's Court he was fined £25.[6] In the same year, George was charged and acquitted of indecent assault, but shortly afterwards he was convicted on a similar charge for which he received a suspended three-month sentence.,[7]
In 1983 George was convicted at the Old Bailey under the pseudonym of 'Steve Majors' for the attempted rape of a woman in his apartment block and served 23 months of a 33 month sentence.[7] Shortly before this, as was revealed after his arrest for the Dando murder, George had been found attempting to break into Kensington Palace; at that time it was the home of Diana, Princess of Wales. He had been discovered on one occasion hiding in the grounds wearing a balaclava and carrying a knife, and in possession of a poem he had written to Prince Charles.[4]
In May 1989 George married a Japanese student, Itsuko Toide, in what Ms Toide described as a marriage "of convenience – but nonetheless violent and terrifying."[8] After four months she reported an assault to the police; George was charged, but the case was dropped before coming to court, and the marriage ended.[7]
A psychologist studying Barry George since his arrest for the Dando murder concluded that he was suffering from several different personality disorders, stating that he has an IQ of 75 and suffers from epilepsy.[5]

That story would make a fucking brilliant mockumentary - Brass Eye style.  I wish we could read the poem he wrote to (Bonnie) Prince Charlie!!!

Despite my completely irrational hatred of Jill Dando at the time (the sort of hatred i now reserve for Mika, Natasha Kaplinsky, the bloke from The Feeling, and Ian Wright) i have an alibi in that i was playing basketball in P.E at the time...

not convinced if he is gulity or not.but the bloke should have been castrated and locked up anyway at the time of the murder.
i've always had a bit of a feeling that a criminal who dando helped get convicted might have killed her in revenge.
likewise the nutter could have killed her too.

Was there not a lot of evidence that was not heard at th re-trial like 2nd gun shot residue found in his pocket, witnesses that have now pegged it etc?

The gun shot residue evidence was ruled inadmissable by the judge as it was basically bollocks. The trace amounts that were found in his pocket could have come from just about anywhere picked up on his hands.

As far as the eyewitness testimony is concerned, it doesn't really stand up. Courts SHOULD be instructed never to convict based on eyewtiness testimony alone as it is incredibly unreliable. In this case it was also a bit vague and pretty irrelevant. Witness A says he saw BG, or someone who looked like him in the area at the time of the killing. Big deal. That's where the man lived FFS.

This unfortunately is what happens when the police are under pressure to crack a case and just round up the local nutter and pressure the CPS to prosecute based on only circumstantial evidence.
