Manchester United

Devlin, Gray, Derbyshire (Gill 85), Eckersley, Chester, Evans (James h/t)), Eikrem (Dudgeon 85), Drinkwater, Macheda (Norwood 58), Hewson, King (Brandao h/t))

Superstars. They haven't produced a decent batch of youngsters since the mid-90's.

What an impressive result.  Those kids took one hell of a errr, drawing.

Even when it's men against boys the Pox fail to win.

(having said that I still think they'll go up this year)

Yep, Duke scored and we eventually made into the Play-Offs.

Rich I was too busy laughing at Oxfords line up to notice who Man Yoo played.

nowt wrong with our lineup.

our trouble over the last three or so years is that we look fine on paper, but play shit. hopefully with the bald eagle moving upstairs and young firestarter patterson installed as manager it will be an improvement this season. jamie guy will take the piss out of this league, i doubt we'll keep him for long. the other signings so far sound good too, though i've not seen them play.

Hmmm. Not to sure about this good on paper thing. Maybe its because they really are not good?

Had this ourselves when we got relegated in 2006. At the time there were players we thought were good who just werent up to it. Best examples Sean O'Hanlon and Rhys Evans. Add in a few Micheal Pooks, Gareth Whalleys, Tony Thorpes and you have yourself a mediocre/lower half div 3 side. The only one who proved to have any worth above League 1 was Rory Fallon. Jamie Cureton will always be shite really, hes just lucky.

Your side now are where they are because they deserve to be there. The team who got you relegated in 2006, how many are playing league football now?

No shame in it, its just taken me a year to figure out Jon Paul McGovern isnt very good. But he'd walk into your team, be your best player by a mile.

No I don't think so. Obviously we've shipped out some shit over the last couple of seasons, but there have been a number of players who've not done well for us yet have moved onto league clubs and established themselves as regulars. Lee Bradbury, Jude Stirling, Chris Zebroski, Lee Mansell, err probably a few others too. Tim Sills looked poo for us but has gone on to be one of the leagues top scorers last season.

"Your side now are where they are because they deserve to be there"

I wasn't under any illusion that the situation was any different to that but thanks for clearing things up for me. As I said we've been playing shit for years.

Face it mate, players who go to Oxford dont go on to have good careers do they?  A few of the oldies have managed to come back, Bradbury, Mooney.

OUFC - players graveyard.

Haldane might do OK for you in non league. Being serious, he is very simmilar player to our Pook.

8 seasons since we shared a division, perhaps if we get relegated and them promoted then it will happen in 09/10 but otherwise a whole generation of new Swindon fans will not have experienced the mastery we have over our rivals.

Once you left The Manor and lost the slope, there was no way back.

Is the former unlucky Swindon striker, Andy Caton at Oxford, or wasn't a deal done?

Saw Ron and Graham Atkinson play for United once (or was it Reggie and Ronnie Kray?).

Just remembered, I was at the CG the last time Oxford won there (1:3), pain that is still burnt into my soul.

Pretty much. Most teams have a couple of players who could cope at League level, mixed in with 9 other fat blokes.

Once you left The Manor and lost the slope, there was no way back.
I loved the Manor. I wish we were still there, I really do. Walking up the steps into the London Road was something else.

I don't know who this Caton bloke is but I vaguely recall his name. We had the usual load of trialists and kept the best few.

We played a little club called Portsmouth the other day. They only bloody sent their reserves though:

GK James
CB Distin
CB Traore
LB Crainie
RB Lauren
MF Kranjcar
MF Mendes
MF Bouba Diop
MF Diarra
ST Crouch
ST Defoe

They brought four subs but used two. We lost 2-1 and weren't trounced. Beat Cheltenham the other day too, who hadn't lost all preseason and have played decent clubs. I'm going to put some money on us to go up.

My memories of Dean Whitehead are Steve Robinson effortlessly going past him and Whitehead just loosing it completely and booting him up the arse.

To be fair he has made a decent career out of some diabolical beginnings.

whitehead was probably about eighteen when he did that! and it was far from a diabolical beginning! starting off on exactly the right foot i'd say - kick a scummer up the backside. he knows his roots.

so how long ago was it that you had a truly good player, spencer?

Steve Robinson was our last truly world class player.  :)

Why dont you come down the County Ground and see for yourself? McNamee played for Watford top flight.

And still not the best player at the club.

Title: Re: Let's all laugh at Pox
Post by: Rich Pullen on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 17:38:08
This is a flawed argument - we haven't produced a truly amazing player in a long while but Oxford aren't even in the Football League (not opening that ol' chestnut, merely stating the facts) and therefore have no reason to contest such a debate.

We have players that would walk into the Oxford squad... However, I doubt there are any in the Oxford set-up that would do the same here... Because of the 2 tier difference.

But, please OF and Spencer - do continue :D

I asked my 13 year old daugher who she'd most like to see Town play and she said the Pox  -not man U or the Arse but the Pox. She wanted us to draw them in the Cup just so we could give them a good thrashing - good girl.
This is no time to go soft on the verminous bastards.

Can you imagine what Macca would do to their defence?  I'd pay good money to see that!!  It'd be murder.

Does anyone else find themselves becoming less & less bothered by the non league side 30 miles up the road?  There are other non league sides a lot closer to Swindon than Oxford, and we're not really that bothered about them.

I don't think the rank and file fan cares too much about O*frod any more.

It's a sorry state of affairs when only a handful of us old uns one the DR side of the TE, can be bothered to abuse Blackstock.

To be fair Reg I dont think most people realised he ever played for the pox.

Although thats another reason to laugh at them, because i thought he looked quite handy last night

Exactly my point...if people cared they'd know this stuff.

All just goes to show that rivalries are a generational thing, though.  I just don't buy the argument that Oxford 'hating' is hardwired in to the DNA of all Swindon supporters.  It wasn't in the early 1950s, because they didn't even exist.  (And I can't imagine the STFC/Headington United rivalry was one that got the pulses racing.)

Our generation (and, by that, I mean anyone from Reg's age down to people now in their 20s) still 'hates'/ridicules/bothers about Oxford, to a greater or lesser extent, because we all remember the misery of losing to them at their rusting internment camp of a ground, or the joy of watching us thrash them 4-1 at home.  Some of us are even lucky enough to have seen us win at the Manor.

But to the majority of our fans below the age of 20, Oxford is nothing.  Give it time.  If they don't win their way back to the League soon, there will be an ever dwindling band of old codgers who care about what they're up to.

I'm under 20 and saw both 4-1's, the 3-0 defeat at the manor and the Turbo double!

I think I'm one a few for my age that saw all of that though.

Well my 5 year old niece is already singing the "if I had the wings of a sparrow, and I had the bum of a crow" song (not in front of her mum and dad though).  She's well up for a bit of Oxford bashing, "we hate oxford" that's another one she likes.  But not as much as "Swindon, yeah, yeah, yeah" which she made up.

When my lad (4 last Sunday) wants to wind me up he either tells me he doesn't like Swindon any more, he likes Oxford and Bristol City. Or he gets his goal out and says "I'm Peter Brezovan, you're Oxford".  Always with a cheeky grin on his face. A swift reminder I can take his season ticket/shirt back does the trick.

I'm hopeful the dislike of the yellow scum can be passed from father to son/daughter, but if they don't sort themselves out in 10 years they could end up being the equivalent of Gillingham . You know some of the older fans don't like them, you just don't know why.

I asked my Company to book me a hotel room in Oxford as I have a two day course up there shortly. Asked them to book a nice little hotel down by the river, near to a nice pub.....and what do the cunts do?????????

Yes, they book me into the Holiday Inn Express next to the Kassam. Cunts.

Any suggestions as to how I can 'leave my mark'......

take apart the stand at the goal end of the pitch brick by brick, then reassemble it at the other end? that'd really confuse them!

The Oxford Mail are trying to claim that the 6-3 voctory over Eastbourne was Oxford's 4th time they've hit 6 goals in the league.

In the league???  Do their journalists not realise that Pox have not been a league member for a couple of years now, and are just a non-league club?

Positive propaganda is the way forward for Oxford... The fact they conceded 3 to Eastbourne at home would worry me.

I browsed their forum and a suprising amount are still quite optimistic. I checked how many games the Conference Champions lost over the decade... Oxford will have to do very well indeed from now on.

2007/08 Aldershot lost 7
2006/07 Dagenham & Redbridge lost 7
2005/06 Accrington Stanley lost 7
2004/05 Barnet lost 8
2003/04 Chester City lost 4
2002/03 Yeovil Town lost 3
2001/02 Boston United lost 8
2000/01 Rushden & Diamonds lost 6
1999/00 Kidderminster Harriers lost 9

Obviously the Play-Offs is an option but they're leaking goals quite nicely so hopefully another season in the Non-Leagues is on.

I went to a conference there a couple of years ago, and left an old badge hidden in the room, hopefully thats inspired a new york mets style hex on them.

I'm not sure whether the Ray Mac would be up to league standards, but some smallish clubs like Accy Stanley, D and R and Shots have done it recently. So who knows...

True, Does Salisbury have a police box?, that's seems to be one of the main things an dofcourse areas that can be segregated.

How did Eastbourne Borough get 3,000 against Cambridge on saturday?

That is an excellent crowd.

Maybe it was the upsurge caused by playing (ableit loosing) to one of Europes biggest clubs?

Big trouble for them financially if you believe some of their fans sites.

Talking about administration. Not wise in the Conference that option.

Am I right in saying that the Conference hand out worse punishments for administration? The main one being demotion.

Last I heard they were trying to buy the stadium off of Kassam. It had been valued at £8m (will be even less than that now) but as part of the takeover they committed to paying £13m. So all they need to do to own the stadium is find a bank willing to lend £8m to a non-league side, and then find someone else who is willing to write off £5m for them to meet the shortfall.

To be honest I don't think Timmy Mallett's fortune stretches that far.
