Not enough money. I wanted at least 2million (and its only £1.5 guaranteed).

Still it beats our record transfer fee received i think.

Good luck Coxy

Cheers Coxy. You single handedly kept us up last year. You will do well at West Brom! Good to see Wilson saying he will boost our striking options although it may not be cheap so looks like we are getting set to table a substancial sub to bring in a new striker!

Good luck Coxy, is the nailed on £1.5m include the sell on clause we had with Reading, so does that mean we will not actually get £1.5m ?

WBA's OS states that Coxy has signed a 2yr deal with a further 2yr option.

A fee of 1.5 million with a further 400,000 for performance related add-ons.

Thanks for all of your efforts at STFC Coxy, good luck for the future.

An inevitability realised. Shame and all that but he was too good to stay in league 1. Slightly disappointed by £1.5m minus Reading's cut, but its a good profit.

Good luck to him, my lad said he hopes he helps take West Brom back up to the Prem. And so do I.

Depending on how much £ Wilson gets back we could build a better team even through our best player leaving.

I can see your point sort of BUT... He was never going to sign a new contract here, had 2 good seasons, we would have got a lot less in January I think as he had 6 months left on his contract.

We dont know what readings cut is though, and i'm wondering whether they have done a deal that means this is what we get and a seperate bit has gone to Reading?

Maybe - doesnt help the deal has been reported as being between £2m and £2.5m all week.

Now all of a sudden its only £1.5m BEFORE Readings cut

Erm, except you don't know that do you? Sutton's suggestion would make perfect sense in reconciling the two sets of figures

2.5 was the figure fitton wanted.that is always gonna drop as it's the start point in a negotiation.

Its always been quoted as 40%

That would make better reading if it didnt include Readings 40%

If it was 2m inclusive of performance related bonuses you would be happy... its only a £100,000 difference...

Always going to happen and no great suprise hopefully we can replace him somehow even if it means a goalscoring midfielder and new striker to chip in.

Would be nice to get some clarity on the sell on clause though as would say I'd feel we've been done abit if after Readings cut and the the money we paid for him originally we only made a £600,000/£700,000 profit on him.

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE
Post by: jonny72 on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, 14:26:16
I'd have liked us to get £2.5m cash for him, but we've done pretty well considering.

Clubs weren't queuing up to buy him, those that were previously interested all refused to pay what we wanted except for West Brom. Celtic offered about £1m for him, Huddersfield was about £600k (I think), Leicester gave the impression they thought £1m was too much and so on - compared to those offers we got an excellent deal.

With a year left on his contract we were running the risk of having to sell him for a lot less in January, or getting even less next summer.

The 40% sell on clause with Reading isn't good, but I've always thought we got him on the cheap from Reading solely due to that sell on clause. I'm not sure Fitton would have taken the risk at say £500k or more without a sell on clause.

The only annoying thing is that Fitton won't come out with a clear statement about how much we got. Why do clubs insist on keeping this information a secret, with a number of unclear and different deals being quoted by the press. It just pisses fans off.

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE
Post by: suttonred on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, 14:31:03
On that last point, thats mainly because, if we are in for cash bids and clubs know how much we have spare they'll hike the price, keep em guessing, better for the club.

Why on earth should he come out with a statement, and why should this information be in the public domain?  It's commercially sensitive, and guaranteed to be used by the clubs from whom we will be looking to buy replacements.  Fans may well be pissed off, but so be it.  If they believe they have a right to know this information, they're mistaken.

Firstly, its just plain ridiculous to suggest that clubs will try to screw us for more money - we're not Chelsea and we're talking about loose change in comparison. Plus whatever we sold him for doesn't have any real effect on how much we've got to spend as Fitton was already putting his hand in his pocket.

Secondly, you might want to do the sums based on the deal that has been announced. Its all over the media as being £1.5m plus another £0.4m in add ons so at present other clubs will think we've got £1.5m in cash. In reality we get under £1m in cash - for us to have £1.5m in cash from the deal we'd have needed to sell him for £2.35m once the sell on clause is taken in to account.

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE

Surely the point is we got as much for cox as we could. We couldn't wait as his value would decrease the closer to contract expiry we got. And keeping him probably wasn't an option as i think from the press snippets i have seen and heard he wanted out if a good offer came.

But 'in reality'  you don't know if the sell on is included in the figures being bandied about - it's just possible that the Adver may be wrong-, and you don't know if it was really 40%.

Why is it so important to know ? It's only one part of the financial jigsaw, without the rest we're none the wiser.

i'm sorry but how can the fee be dissapointing? He has played one full season for us and scored 32 goals and that was a dissapointing season at that.

SP played 3 seasons for us scoring a lot more goals consistantly and also in a play off season and we sell him for a reported £750k. That was dissapointing.

£1.9m for coxy is good business after one season with us. Dissapointing he's gone but not dissapointed at the price

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE

but Coxy is a far far better player than SSP-quality like his is rare, some of the goals he scored were world-class and that's not an exaggeration.Do you think he is worth more than Horlock was when we sold him for 1.5 million?Thats all we are quaranteed

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE
Post by: Berniman on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, 15:23:41
I would have hoped that we would have included a further sell on clause to the deal as well, maybe 25%, so if they sell him on for say £4m if he proves a hit then we will get more further on down the line!

Good deal, good luck Coxy!

no but we were in league 1 (championship) and thus (for whatever reason i don't agree with) clubs demand higher transfer fees.

if Horlock was here now in the new League 1 being sold he wouldn't even fetch a million.
I mean Darren Bent, £14m. Just cos he's in the premiership doesn't make him any good.
So to sell a player after 1 season in league 1 for almost £2m i think is good business

Title: Re: COXY HAS OFFICIALLY GONE

Sold after 12 months at a 700% mark up for a club record fee is excellent business.

As someone else said, the fee for Cox is based on him being a League One player - if he had just scored 30 goals in the Championship then we'd be looking at £4m minimum, if he'd just done it in the Premier League then it would be £15m minimum. But he's only done it in League One so £2m or so is about right.

So he's worth more than 7 times what he was worth 12 months ago?!  I think some people need a serious reality check.  We're talking about a young striker who has had 1 successful season in Division 3.

The lad goes for an all time club record fee and it's not enough?  What do you want...blood?

I don't think that's certain. He has a lack of explosive first 5 yards pace and weaknesses he needs to iron out (first touch, misses the odd sitter).

But he's only 22 and I honestly really hope he plays in the Prem. He's earned the chance to prove himself in the Championship and if he does the job WBA will be promoted and we'll find out.

I am well upset that he has gone.

But I did say all along that £1.5m was a fair price for him, and I was proven to be right.

Anyone expecting more than that is, quite frankly, delusional.

To get that amount in cash up front is fantastic, and the performance clauses are a bonus.

:)

Fair price I think - as fans we will never know the fine details of these deals, that's just the way it is.

The guy has a lot of potential but I wouldn't necessarily back him to go all the way to the top - that's a massive jump - I'll be watching his progress with interest next season.

I'm not sure would could have asked for more - 32 goals and something like a 700% profit.  Can't complain.  Although many will.

good point, so are we infact only going to get around £875,000?  (thats around 60% right, just off the cuff figure in my head)

If the 40% sell-on is right (and I've seen nothing official to state that it is), Reading would receive about £520,000 (40% of the profit) assuming we paid £200,000 in the first place which seems to be the commonly quoted figure.

That would leave us with just under £1 million up front. The add-ons would also be split 60/40.

I said some time ago that I thought fair value for Cox was £1.5 million so Im not disappointed at all with the fee. If more clubs had entered the bidding we may have got more, but it seems like only WBA were prepared to show the colour of their money.

Given that he has never played above League One level, has only a year left on his contract, and has made it pretty plain that he wants to move on, I think its a very good deal for the club.

West Brom is probably a good club for him to go to because the add-ons likely include a payment if they get promoted which is quite likely. They are also quite likely to go straight back down again, so if he does score goal in the meantime, we may profit from a hefty sell on percentage ourselves in due course.

Its clearly part of the business plan to speculate on young players and hope to realise a profit after a couple of years or so. If we re-invest the money wisely (and I have confidence that Wilson will do that), its a good strategy.

We'll replace him adequately, the newbie may not score as many goals but players come and go. We need others to put their shift in in the goalscoring department anyway.

No, we get 1.5m out of which Reading get 40%

How do you work that out? surely they will only receive 40% of the initial fee?

Read the Adver site! Fitton's article....

"Town will receive £900,000 for Cox straight up from West Brom and it is believed that £600,000 will be passed on to Reading as part of a sell-on clause, which the clubs negotiated before the striker arrived in Wiltshire.

The Robins may get up to £400,000 in add-ons from the Baggies, depending on how Cox performs for the Championship club."

I read it that West Brom will pay £900k to us and £600k to Reading, which gives £1.5 million in total.

Badly worded on the Adver's part I think.

Exactly. Open to interpretation though, as Ralph has clearly demonstrated.

What they should have put is.. "Town will receive 900k for Cox upfront and an additional 600k will be passed onto Reading as part of the sell on clause."

If Ronaldo's worth 80m and Kaka's worth 60m then we should have got at least the GNP of France for Coxy with only a small baguette going to Reading. It's an outrage, no ambition, sack the board etc etc

The adver are cunts we all know it unfortunately it the first place most Town fans get to read anything about STFC and invariably they fabricate a lot of it mostly from reading forums. There will be loads of people reading that story this morning and interpreting it the same way that Ralphy has. I particularly like the "believed to be £600,000 to Reading" the cunts don't know they are just going on a rumour started on the thisis forum a few months ago.

I've got to look... and my god it winds me up... they're all a bunch of twats.

COX PAYS TRIBUTE TO SWINDON TOWN  (Sorry if already posted)

Quote
SIMON Cox revealed he left Swindon with a heavy heart, having completed a £1.9million move to West Brom earlier this week.

The 22-year-old striker spoke for the first time since his transfer this morning at a press conference in the Midlands, at which the Advertiser was present.

And Cox couldn't talk highly enough of his time in Wiltshire, which set him up for his next step up the football ladder.

“I believed in myself to move down a league to come back up. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Swindon - lovely people and a great club.

“The chairman and manager were superb with me but now I’ve got the opportunity to play in a higher league with a big club, and I’ve got to take that.

“I can’t emphasise how much of a nice club that is. They were superb with me, and under the new manager they should do alright this year."

Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo said: “I’ve seen Simon personally over the past year, followed him, and I think he has all the attributes to become a successful player for us at West Brom.

“His goalscoring record is very, very good, and he is a young, talented, hungry player who wants to move on and show the rest of the world what kind of player he is. I think that’s the kind of player we are looking for.

“I think it’s unfair to compare him to anyone else - he is his own player in his own right. He is a very intelligent player and very good in-and-around the box, finding the space and playing offthe main striker.

“These are his strengths and I’m confident he will score a lot of goals for us."

Nah. Just getting the placement right.

'Swindon Reject' will be lost on the DRS. They will probably clap and automatically go for their flasks in there. It will be heard by a block of about 9x9 seats.

I think Ralphy's suggestion deserves full on TE support. Change stands Ralphus, at least for this one.

+ another 600k as part of the sell on.

If Reading valued him at 400, then they've done rather well with the 720k they've got so far.

No not really, they valued him at 400k when he was an unproven youngling 18 months ago. Now he has scored loads of goals and will be competing directly with them for promotion to the Premier League next season.
They would now value him a lot higher than 720k I'm sure. We're certainly the winners in this situation.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they've done us out of anything. Just that the risk of a sell on clause has worked out nicely for them. I'm sure they often end up worthless with young players.

Looks like Fitton is starting to realise that a certain amount of investment in good players is required to eventually make the books balance. A good Youth team alone is not going to run this club on and off the pitch.

At the start of last season our first team saleable assets amounted solely to Simon Cox.

At the start of this season they will be Cuthbert and Morrison, as well as possibly this player from "a much bigger club".

In that respect, things are looking better for the club.

I reckon that £600k figure is wrong anyway.

There is no way we'd pay Reading 40% (assuming 40% is the sell on figure) of the transfer fee, it would have to be 40% of any profit made.

By my calculations, we gave Reading £552k, with another £160k to come if the £400k worth of clauses are met :)
