Title: Jonathan Ross
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 11:56:39
His cheeky chappy routine used to be quite amusing, especially when he was embarrassing puritanical American guests on his chat show.  But now he's heading towards middle age, am I alone in thinking he's

(a) not that funny any more; and
(b) a dirty old man?

£18 million over 3 years?!  Not worth it, in my view.

Jonathan Ross is vastly overrated on television. The Yanks are good value on his show because they're simply not used to swearing or anything remotely considered controversial mentioned in interviews.

I only watch he Friday night with JR because of the calibre of guests he gets on there. He's an awful interviewer, constantly making some dirty joke or relating everything back to himself. Tit.

Bring back The Frank Skinner Show!

I'm a great admirer of Ricky Gervais, but him and Wossy together makes me want to vomit.

Good shout on Skinner, did anyone else see him on HIGNFY?

Johnathon Ross is brilliant worth every penny of what he gets paid.

I guess this was sparked by the Russell Brand incident?

Yep, alot of guests tend to sit there and nod/look confused.

I've never found him funny and some of his gags have been really offensive to disabled people. He hasn't had the good grace to apologise when he's gone over the top. Basically, if he was off the air the world would not be a worse place.

I like jonathan ross, especially his radio show (that I don't listen to often enough).  His tv show's okay but don't often see that either because of the time it's on.

Brand is very good.

However I didn't enjoy listening to the Andrew Sachs voicemail messages they left, didn't find them funny at all.  An apology should suffice here though, no sackings, just move on.

It was a little bit over the top but I was impressed with Russels song of apology. It was just two comics trying to out do each other.

5000 people have complained about it,I wonder how many listened to the show and how many read about it in the Daily Mail and became outraged.Did the Daily Mail mention that Manuels Granddaughter is in a performance thingy called "The Suicide Sluts"?

I've heard his second book will be out in time for Christmas (or maybe it is already) will be getting that too!

Definitely Yeovil, it did come across as one up manship, just didn't find it an easy listen.

Btw - Did Russell confirm at the end that he had shagged her, or not?

I love Jonathan Ross, His Tv show is fucking ace. He has great guests and one of the reasons why it's so good is him making himself look a tit by talking about how great he is. It's kind of closet self-deprecation in my eyes and that makes him and what he says funny, therefore I think the bloke is worth every penny.

Oh right so because it's in the Daily Mail it must be wrong. ::)

I'm not trying to stick up for the Mail here - I don't read it - but have you ever thought that sometimes the BBC just gets it plain wrong, and just because the Mail have it as front page news is not justification to use as a defense to the contrary.

It's funny how in all the coverage no-one is prepared on record to defend on the BBC what the BBC did.

Tricky one, because usually this is exactly the case.  (Tomorrow, the Mail will out both Ross and Brand as immigrant lesbian baby eaters - sending their readership into renewed fits of conservative apoplexy.)

My original post, incidentally, was not prompted by the Daily Mail...and didn't even refer to Russell Brand.  I just think that Jonathan Ross isn't anything like as funny as he thinks he is - and certainly not worth £6 million a year of licence payers' money (although I accept that others will disagree.)

Yes, which is precisely what his spokesman said the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th times he was asked about it. They were talking about this on 5Live when I was on my way to the non-match - this dominated the PM's briefing to the press yesterday, they basically (according to 5Live) hounded a statement out of the spokesman, then all went "Ooooh, look Brown's commented on it".

Ross and Brand should be hung though. Just for being gits as much as anything else

Yeah good point Rich, Mr Brand's next broadcast should be funny as, hopefully his listening figures will go through the roof.

So Sach's innocent little grand daughter now wants action taken against RB & JR.  I suppose the more people talk about it the more well known she'll get, great career move for the girl.

My thoughts exactly.

[rant]It's because our country is full of stupid, fuck-all-else-to-do cunts. This nothing incident, that Brand and Ross have started, perfectly sums up how pathetic this country is becoming. It's not Mail readers, it's not Tories, that's far too much of a tabloid gereralisation. It's every man and his dog, wife, neighbours and their dogs. It's simply busybodies, whose lives are in the descendancy, making their own little boredom fillers.

I despair and i find it embarrassing and frustrating how 10,000 people have so little to do apart from choose to be offended by shit which means fuck all on the scale of things.[/rant]

One of the things alot of Brits pride themselves on being is a bit more relaxed (for want of a better word more liberal) and less OTT in comparison to those across the pond for example. We're always first to bemoan and laugh at the Americans when this sort of thing happens over there.

Brand & Woss were dickheads but no different to their usual escapades nor extreme enough to warrant such a reaction. If this was a message directed at clearly ill old man such as Norman Wisdom then fair enough sack them and shame on them - but it wasn't and just because Sachs in 78 doesn't actually mean he's going to keel over because of this.

It's a sad state of affairs really therefore just like the Yanks I'm going to sue all parties for something I'm not quite sure of yet.

I think, Batch, the (overthetop) kicking that the BBC is receiving is more related to the fact that their response has been wholly inadequate. The only reason the BBC has eventually apologised albeit grudgingly (Brands apology was followed by ‘but I still think it’s funny’ – hardly sincere) is because of the OTT ranting coverage by newspapers. Is this the only way the BBC can be held to account. Sad if it is.

Let’s not forget that they left insulting, unsolicited, illegal messages on the answer phone of Mr. Sachs, who is among other things, a 78 year old pensioner, apparently as revenge for him not being prepared to be interviewed by them.

Any other employer would have both of them up before a disciplinary board with a view to sacking them or suspending them at the very least.

A commercial company would have dealt with this promptly and it would have all blown over within 24 hours, but the BBC has been dragging it’s heels, pretending not to notice, probably with the view of; ‘so what it’s not like anyone can cancel their license fee is it?’

Oh get a life!

What's actually happened here? Two overgrown schoolboys have phoned Andrew Sachs, who had agreed to be interviewed on the show and then not answered his 'phone, and left a couple of daft messages. Two people were offended by the language used.

Andrew Sachs when interviewed seems actually quite reasonable about it. He clearly thinks both of them are complete dicks and wants an apology but that's about it. Was an elderly pensioner shocked to his core to discover his twenty something grand-daughter has a sex life? Probably not, he's knows she's in some band called the Satanic Sluts so I doubt he's been entertaining any misconceptions about her.

As far as the two "victims" of this prank are concerned, 50 million people in Britain now know that Sachs is still alive, bit of a coup there I thought he'd been dead for years, and girl, who's oddly offended about the whole thing for a Satanic Slut, has had more publicity for her shit band than she could have dreamed possible. The presence of Max Clifford as her new press agent makes it fairly clear she's goning to milk it for all it's worth.

What really pisses me off is the press and other media pundits whipping up this moral outrage about something that nobody had even noticed had happened. 10,000 people read the Daily Mail and then went online to watch the clips IN ORDER TO BE OUTRAGED by them. Twats!

And it's left me having to put up with being bombarded by images of Kelvin Fucking Mckenzie moralising about the role of the media and the need to be responsible. FFS! Like The Sun was never just a little out of line under that turd.

Gotcha! Kelvin? Hillsborough! Ringing any bells you hippocritical cunt! Was no-one offended by those front pages? Little clue the Sun's circulation in Merseyside has never recovered from the Hillsborough coverage. What about the £1m in damages you had to pay to Elton John after accusing him of shagging underage rentboys in a story you completely fabricated?

If for no other reason that you end up on the same side as that fucker people should think twice about joining in this fucking witch hunt. And Gordon Fucking Brown should have better things to do. Arsehole

No it isn't. Internally the BBC Trust will be investigating. Externally OFCOM are rightly investigating. That's the end of it in my book.

In essence it is a backlash on two 'marmite' artists who are in many peoples eyes overpaid. It is free publicity for a two bit Goth actress, the hurt caused long since gone in the rush to employ Max Clifford and sell her story to the Sun. I'm sure Sachs and said bint were upset, but the original broadcast drew 2 public complaints. Then the media were all over it, and suddenly 10,000 people took the opportunity to put the boot in.

Suspending them is an overreaction in the extreme.

I think that it is being pounced upon to highlight declining moral standards. The trouble with being a 'shock-pjock' is that its all been done before. So, to get a laugh, or notoriety, you have to be more and more shocking.

Think the point that is being made is that its not nice to leave crude messages, or pick on, a 78 year old man. Something that I tend to agree with!

If either were to do that to my father I would punch their lights out!

The other issue is the fact that the public are forced by law, under pain of imprisonment to fund the BBC. I'd expect them to have some morals.

My granddad, if he was alive, would think what a pair of idiots and get on this his life because he came from an era that didn't whinge at the first opportunity.

Sachs and his family had to flee Germany because they were jewish for goodness sake, that's serious real life stuff. I doubt he's that bothered, he wants a sincere apology and that's fair enough.

Bart vs. Australia style - let's allow Sachs the opportunity of a booting.

Russell started off by ringing up Manuel from Fawlty Towers saying he was from the London STD clinic and then told him his grand daughter had the worst case of vaginal discharge he had ever seen.  He went on to describe the smell and taste of her private area.  Jonathan Ross joined in the disgraceful sexual orientated tirade against Manuel's grand daughter by adding, her anus was so large he could fit his foot up there.  Queue 10 minutes of sexual innuendo regarding saggy bottom rings and vaginal discharge and you're pretty much there Ralphy.

It's not for the faint hearted my friend.

He then rang up a couple of other times, one of which he pretended to be a west indian fella, by the name of Charlton Marshall, he told Mr Sachs that he was going to kill him, because he "he shagged his grand daughter and now had the bad aids".

Really was quite terrible.

Oh come off it Batch, Ofcom are only investigating because of the furore generated by newspapers, as for the BBC Trust, this is another Quango that shouldn't need to be there if the BBC was subjected to market forces. (as you say 'internally' yes we all know how that works)

Do you even listen to the show?

At the time I couldn't help but laugh at them. We've all phoned a number expecting to talk to a person, got an answerphone and blurted out something stupid. They kept phoning back with the intention of apologising and smoothing things over, but would repeatedly sabotage each other and collapse in giggles. It was funny.

What's right over the top is the leaders of the two main political parties in this country wasting theit time with this nonsense, it being the lead story on the fucking news, and 10,000 old grannies phoning up to complain about being offended by something they didn't even listen to.

Andrew Sachs seems quite relaxed about the whole thing, why the fuck so many of you have got a wasp up your arse about it I don't know.

Dave, Russell Brand is a modern day "shock" comedian, he does things a little on the risky side for a laugh, okay so this wasn't his finest hour. But come on there was a handful of complaints until the media decided to go on and on and on about it.

I don't think he should have resigned, I understand why he has, but disappointed he didn't stay on and make the Beeb make the decision.

I look forward to his new show on some other channel, I hope Sach's gdaughter does not gain and become some sort of celebrity through this.

Obviously this tale of morality shows that making an obscene phone call is worse than being a muslim terrorist with an interest in kiddy fiddling,  but being a bit of a slut then selling your story to the highest bidder is absolutley fine and possibly to be encouraged.

When he was talking about fucking his puppy (or was it a cat?) and then pretended to perform various acts on a butterfly, i couldn't stop laughing.

Fuck me, the whole world (well, the mail online) has gone mad

Quote from: Mail online
While fury against the BBC over Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross was at its peak, the corporation brazenly aired a highly offensive remark about the Queen.

During the comedy show Mock The Week on Wednesday evening, Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle made a 'disgracefully foul' so-called joke.

Asked to think of something the Queen would not say in her Christmas speech, he put on a high voice and said: 'I have had a few medical issues this year  -  I'm now so old that my p**** is haunted.'

The decision to allow the 'joke' to be aired on the show at 10pm, hours after Brand resigned, has led to renewed anger among viewers.

Boyle's 'gag', in a Mock The Week repeat, is just one example of the depths to which the BBC has fallen.

What a fucking steaming crock of horse shit. I can't think of an offensive 5 letter word beginning with P relating to a female? I can think of Porch? Purse? Perhaps it was Piss and the mail just can't spell, that's quite likely actually.

It was "pussy". And it was a repeat of their New Year show.

You can always rely on the Daily Mail to be at the forefront of news reporting.

So clearly they were referring to her cat.

I don't see the problem.

I've always enjoyed Brand on the radio too.

I also find it amusing that one of the biggest opponents to political correctness (daily mail) went all PC to get him and Ross in trouble. It makes their stance a bit confusing. Ahhh... the invested interest against the BBC, goes along way to show why it's worth while having.
