Thought he'd end up somewhere like Wigan to rebuild his career. Don't think he's finished yet but he has to stay fit. Big gamble for Man U.

I had a feeling a big club would come in for him. If he can get fit he might score a lot of goals. Man U might be thinking that the old Englans partnership of Rooney and Owen will come good.

Not a gamble if he does go there..will be a bit part player and will score for fun with the chances they create...wont cost a bean so a no lose gamble for Fergie.

Owen will score goals in a good team, as long as he stays fit.

Be great for England if it worked out.

Oh, and it wasn't bollocks.

Not a financial gamble, a gamble in whether he stays fit to do the job. I expect Fergie will sign another striker to cover it anyway, or actually play Berbatov.

Bookmakers Slash Odds On Michael Owen Joining Manchester United
An unlikely move it may well be, but the odds on it happening have mysteriously dropped today...
2 Jul 2009 15:59:25

Michael Owen has been linked with a host of clubs since it became apparent that he was not going to renew his contract with Newcastle united which expired this week, but no reported were dedicated to suggestions that Manchester United were among potential bidders.

Punters in the United Kingdom, though, have begun backing the former England striker for an unlikely move to Old Trafford. Leading bookmakers have therefore reduced the odds on an incredible switch occurring.

Sky Bet, for instance, have slashed the odds on the switch from 20-1 to 7-4, after United missed out on the high profile signing of Karim Benzema from Olympique Lyonnais, with big-spending Spanish giants Real Madrid trumping the Red Devils with an audacious and lucrative bid.

Few would ever have suggested that Alex Ferguson would turn to the former Liverpool striker though, more famous these days for his injuries than his goals, but desperate times breed desperate measures, with Cristiano Ronaldo already gone and the imminent departure of Carlos Tevez set to weaken the Old Trafford forward line further.

"With Real Madrid hoovering up several high profile targets, United are running out of options to fill the void left by the departure of Ronaldo and Tevez and Owen is a cheap option," Sky Bet's Mike Triffitt told bettingzone.co.uk.

"We've had a steady stream of bets on free agent Owen joining United today. A move to United should suit Owen, who wants to get back into the England squad and will feel he has a better chance with a higher profile club."

It had been reported that Owen's boyhood club Everton were now favourites to land the player, with Hull City, Stoke City and Aston Villa also apparently interested.

Would be a big shock and I can't really see it happening, but Fergie doesn't always do the expected.  Sometimes these things come off, sometimes not.

As you can tell, I'm sitting firmly on the fence.

They'd probably sell a shit load of Owen shirts wouldn't they?

Owen should be at his peak now, its just a bad run of injuries and playing for a shit team that has fucked him up. If Man Utd do give him a go, if it pays off and Owen hits his best form again they'll have picked up a £20m striker for nothing.

Surely worth a risk, maybe just on a six month contract so they can offload him in January if they want. Probably a good chance Owen will agree to cut his wage demands and / or a pay as you play deal, just to play for Man Utd.

Apparently denied by Utd

With Utd only playing 1 up though that si not haw to get the best out of him, he is better in a front 2 partnership

Owen has lost his only asset...pace.

United also denied that they were going to sign Berbatov last summer....then Sir Alex was pictured picking Berbatov up from the airport !!!

Owen is still a great goalscorer and in a team that creates that number of chances he can't fail to get goals. Importantly i reckon playing at united and with Rooney hopefully will mean that he can get upto top form and into the England squad ahead of the world cup.

not heard much on this from our team at OT, but then we're often the last to know!

It's an odd signing, but classic fergie. Sheringham, larsson, could be a masterstroke if Owen stays fit...

You reckon Fergie's signing Little Michael to train his racehorses, due to his jockey-like shortness?

Owen had a lot more in his locker than pace when at his peak, was a great finisher with both feet and head and his movement has always been good - there's no reason the finishing and movement can't still make him a valuable asset, especially as Utd rarely have a 'fox in the box' type player picking up the peices.

Could work out OK.

Just watching SSN - loads of Liverpool fans emailing in saying it's a disgrace he should sign for Utd, it's been 5 years since he was at 'pool and he was an Everton fan anyway.

If a club in the Champions League offers you a deal when you don't have one I think fans from an old club would be the last thing you think about?

Funny thing is they'll probably sign Tevez and tell everyone how great he is despite the fact he used to play for Man U.

Awesome, I'm down with this big time, think that as a cheap wildcard option this could be the signing of the summer in the Prem - he only needs to score 10-15 for it to have been worth it for Utd and if he's fit and in good form for next summer then great!

Possibly. I agree he's a very good player - it just depends if he can stay fit and if Ferguson's willing to change his approach to fit Owen in. Perhaps this is all part of reshaping the team having lost Ronaldo, to suit a new style of play?

He only missed 11 games last season - not too bad. I saw him play a few times and yes he was poor but he was offered zero distribution.

He's a long over due replacement for RVN.

He'll stay in the 6 yard box and tap them in. I think he will do well there.

It would be a real bonus, if Owen could regain some sharpness and make the WC assuming we qualify...England aren't exactly overloaded with strikers.

So which team has Vassell signed for? I bet it ends in 'spor'

On the subject of Owen - fuck me that came out of left field. A day after Allardyce giving a whole catalougue of quite justifiable reasons as to why he would not/could not sign Owen, Man U snap him up. I guess it's fair to say that Ferguson knows what he is doing so it will be very interesting to see how that pans out. As Reg said, if Owen can get his career up and running again it can only be good for England.

you'd think wouldn't you? It'd have to be in somewhat shameful way. Couldn't be having all that public outpouring of grief bollocks. Or maybe he dies and they don't tell anyone. That would be fine.

I've come to terms with the fact that there are lots of people I'd like to be dead. Some of which I know very little about. It's not a personal thing. I don't really care if they've got families and stuff who will be upset. The opposite in fact. It actually turns me on a little.

You should team up with Gazza, with his role as Death and with your wishlist of Deathees, you could have a few adventures.
Try and get it on TV, i'd like to watch it.
