Title: Robbie Keane to Liverpool (for alot of money)
Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, July 28, 2008, 17:51:37
A reasonably interesting transfer - Spurs have squeezed every available penny from Liverpool it would appear too. He'll be just as massive a loss to Tottenham as Berbatov leaving - if not more.

I'd say Liverpool now have a strikeforce capable of "big" things - but as per normal they'll get poor results against average clubs.

"The Club can announce that it has reached agreement with Liverpool FC for the transfer of Robbie Keane.

Speaking on the announcement of the transfer, Chairman Daniel Levy said: "I was incredibly disappointed when I first heard, not only that Liverpool had been working behind the scenes to bring Robbie to Anfield, but that Robbie himself wanted to go and he submitted a transfer request to this effect.

"I have already made my opinion clear on the nature of this transaction. I don't regard it as a transfer deal - that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade - this is very much an enforced sale, for which we have agreed a sum of £19m as compensation plus a potential further £1.3m in additional compensation."

Liverpool FC has also acknowledged that the way its website reported comments of its manager, which were widely covered by the media, was inappropriate and in light of that acknowledgement has apologised and agreed to make a donation to our Club's main charity, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Tottenham Hotspur has therefore agreed not to pursue its official complaint to the Premier League."

Exactly - he's gone from an underachieving club on the up (possibly) to a club whose fans will never be content.

As Dave mentioned - the Johnson fee sort of justifies the sale.

Good old wikipedia

Robert "Robbie" David Keane (born 8 July 1980 in Tallaght, Dublin) is an Irish footballer, currently playing for The Bindippers. He is also the Republic of Ireland's current captain and record goalscorer.

Keane and Torres will be a fantastic partnership - can see a top two finish for them now, Arsenal are in the middle of meltdown and Chelski can't match those goals.  Good signing if somewhat unexpected before the rumours began.

N'ah they'll still lose 2-1 to 'inferior' opposition - that's the Liverpool way... But they'll ease the pain by winning a knockout competition.

Good business by Spurs really. Youve got to ask whether Liverpool can really afford that with their off field problems.

Just highlights how difficult it is for non big four Premiership teams to keep their squads together. Keane seemed one of the more commited Spurs players.

The most off-side player of all time?

It's between him, Andy Cole and Inzaghi.

Whoever was Hull's number 10 when we beat them 3-0 in the 95/96 season was offside loads.

I think that was the game when we just passed the ball about for ages.

The google test:

"Robbie Keane offside" = 108,000 results
"Andy Cole offside" = 92,300 results
"Inzaghi offside" = 48,200 results

Robbie Keane wins.

Is it wrong that when I hear of such huge transfers a little bit of me hopes he gets injured - nothing serious - just one of those nagging injuries that hinder a season.

Nothing against RK as I enjoy watching the fella play, shame he's joined such a horribly up it's arse club.

Keane's a very good player. 24 / 25 goals in his last 2 seasons makes him one of the premier leagues top strikers.  Looks like a natural partner for Torres also.

As others have said he looks cheap if Andy Johnson is worth £12m

I think Rafa has finally got it into his head that he needs to buy some proven Premiership quality rather than Spanish people who may take some time or never adapt top the English game.

When you look back he has signed some right shit, luckily he is shrewd enough to get rid of them after one season.

Robbie Keane is a good striker and only said somewhere this time last year I'm surprised one of the 'big 4' hadnt already taken a gamble on him, he always been pretty consistent over the years.

Not sure how well he'll play up top with Torres but Keane (providing he plays) should be good for 20+ goals.

He's a damn good improvement on Peter fucking Crouch....

I think Robbie Keane is one of the most technically-able players that the prem has ever seen.
Right up there, although probably just behind, the likes of Bergkamp, Zola, Cantona.
It's one of those really exciting signings for the neutral and i really hope him and Torres can hit it off although i get the feeling it's one of those partnerships that looks a little bit too good to be true.

Is it? I thought that, like most Liverpool signings it was a bit meeeeh! I can honestly say I've got no greater idea now what philosphy or pattern of play Benitez is aiming for then I didi when he took over at Anfield. Every close season he ships in about 6 players for about £40m and usually ships out the ones he bought the previous summer at a bit of a loss. I'm starting to think he's making it up as he goes along. He'll sell Keane to West Ham or some other no mark club for £8m come next June just you wait.

I find the contemp towards Liverpool astonishing at times. Had he gone to Man U or Chelsea then Keane would have been hailed 'a fantastic signing' yet because he has signed for Liverpool then of course he is overpriced and overrated. Complete tosh. Keane will be immense with Torres upfront (who if I remember correct was branded as last pre-season as a waste of money, and will take a season or two to settle at Liverpool. Well if thats true, then fuck me the Premiership must be shitting themselves this season.)
IMO there are a lot of users on here who adopt a Premiership team. I get bored reading how good Rooney is, when in fact he of all strikers has a very poor goal return concidering he cost £30M. Lets be honest he is a fat fuck. But he's English so we let him off. Arsenal have a strong strike force if RVP lasts the season but in general of the top 4, I genuinely think Liverpool have made improvements to their squad and if they get Barry too I think they will almost certainly challenge for the title.
The most stupid thing I keep being said is how far behind Liverpool are to Man U and how Liverpool are in danger of losing 4th spot. Liverpool would have finished above Man U if they managed to beat them twice instead of losing both games! At Man U only had a greater goal difference because of the goals they scored against Newcastle twice. IMO Liverpool will easily cement a top 4 finish (I think 3rd) and there is just no way the top 4 will be broken this season.

I don't remember anyone critising Fernando Torres when he arrived in England.

I stand by my statement - he and Torres should score many goals together but they'll still lose silly games against 'inferior' opposition thus ruining their chances of a title run.

And if Spurs sign Bentley they will have done some good business this summer, getting rid of all that shite, for decent money, and replacing it with the likes of Modric and Dos Santos.

Has anyone noticed how "in" this word has become recently (not just of TEF, generally)... Yes, it's been around for years but it seems the cool dude word of choice at the moment - Whatever the topic I always hear this phrase nowadays.

perhaps not critisised, but some eybrows were raised that they had spent so much on someone who whilst clearly talented, had never had a fantastic goal retrun for athletico madrid.

I dont theink anyone really thought he would do as well as he did and so quickly

This summers transfers have been a marked improvement for Tottenham.

Also, Spurs had a ridiculously big following at my school - I could only explain it was because of the brief exploits of Gascoigne and Lineker in the early 90's.

The only reason i have a soft spot for Spurs was because of Gazza at Italia 90, followed by winning the FA Cup, and my nan growing up by the ground. At that impressionable age, they seemed like a good team to follow. Then i got taken to the County G, and that was it!

OK it's 12 million and they haven't even waited until the end of the season. But the principles the same.

This Benitez fellah is either not completely in control of the clubs transfer policy or is just buying players at random as they become available with no clear idea of how he's going to use them.

There's a bit of a power struggle with Parry who seems to think he's a DoF as well as a CEO - I suspect the Keane acquisition and the poor way he's been handled since then is part of that.

The root cause is these Spanish managers coming over here and taking jobs that British managers are entitled to do less well for more money. Lawrie Sanchez, John Gregory and Ian Holloway should do a flying picket of Anfield. British jobs for British gaffers!

Keane is a mint player, unfortunately not suited to Liverpool's negative tactics.

Same old Benitez, just too defensive.

Surely he needed another striker if he was going to sell Keane? They arent exactly banging them in for fun?

negative tactics? seems to be working positively, theyve even trained kuyt (a striker) on the wing, thats seems a litle positive to me,a winger that can shoot.

benitez has also said he didnt need another stirker because he has faith in ngog and babel (god knows why).

adding to this, liverpool have hardly been banging them in because keane has been the one upfront while torres has been injured..torres is back, with gerrard behind, they're a good team, why make keane stay if he isnt gonna get a game.

All you need is a Torres injury and bang goes Rafa's master plan, chasing a title with Gerrard off of Kuyt would be a comedy show.

He's played enough games to get a winners medal.

That'll be going straight on eBay. :)

tis true, but keane was his backup before and that didnt really work.if the above were the case he'd probably change to a more idealised 4-4-2 with gerrard and alonso in the middle with kuyt up top with either ngog or babel. he's manufactured kuyt into a winger,im sure he can manufacture someone into an attacker.

So Utd are a fantastic free flowing attacking team and have score 40 league goals this season and Liverpool are a defensive negative team, and have scored 39.

Hmmm........ ?

Something not right there.

A winger that can shoot - that can't be Kuyt then he is absolute rubbish

Gerrard off after 15 mins with a hamstring injury me thinks Rafa may already be regretting selling Keane.

It's not been a bad match in the first 2 thirds, but there's just not been enough oal mouth action.  Still puzzled about the socks though.

It's boring me :)

The socks is clearly a planned event, trawl through the Everton forums and I'd imagine you'd find something - but that would be quite sad.

scousers are learning not to use knives on each other, but socks are just as deadly...only £1.50 from sportsworld  :rocket:

and i think i was wrong, liverpool definitely need another striker torres just wasnt up for it tonight! probably doesnt care about the FA cup.

My name is fellaini, benitez should buy me for my hair piece O0

It was an interesting game to watch even if not particularly birlliant. Most of the entertainment was to be had watching the ref avoid booking players and seeing what was going on on pitchside rather than the football itself!

As for ITV's monumental cock-up, that was shamefully amateur!

What are the socks getting chucked on the pitch all about then?

After a bit of googling i found this.

people from Kirby are known as sock robbers,And because Kirby is outside the city boundary they are known as 'wools.

pretty boring really i thought it was something a bit more spectacular.

Kirkby being where Everton want to build a new ground. Wools is a contraction of "wooliebacks" (ie anyone from the NW but not from Liverpool), not really relevant to the socks despite the apparent material coincidence. Just thought I'd knit it all together - maybe this deserves a new thread?

I can see a pattern developing here.

I wanted Everton to win. But actually they are/were even more negative than Liverpool!

It took Everton 23 minutes to have possesion in Liverpools final third.

As for the advert break, fuck that, suprised anyone was still watching.
