Twice now I have bid on an item and someone else has won with a lesser amount. Wtf!

that's odd.

did they cancel your bid somehow? can you see yourself in the bidding history.

I've managed to get one now, I think it might be because I leave bidding til the last 5 seconds. Maybe the timing is out. Bid history looked normal.

Yeah sometimes there is a bit of lag if you leave the sniping too late
