This isn't going to go down well, but I hate batter and always have done as I find it too fatty and slimy - hence why I never have fish and chips, love fish fingers (especially in a Stottie Cake) so its breadcrumbs for me.

In terms of best chippy's, Hodgsons in Lancaster won loads of awards and was great and the village we have moved to here doesn't have much but it does have a great chippy (the portions are huge and its cheap - 'small' fish and chips which is too big for the wife is only £3.40!).

Local to Swindon (ish) when I was a kid the chippy in Highworth was great and always a bribe to get me to go to the dentist in Swindon as we would have chips on the way home (plus a trip to the Railway Museum always swung it for me!) - no idea if the Highworth chippy is still there?
