At a guess, I'd say it's likely to be political.
But then thousands have died in the last few years due to terrorism from Islamic insurgents in the South. It's a real problem that doesn't get much news-time for whatever reason. There's always a fear that they could up their efforts and start hitting Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket etc.
