In my garage I have a single ceiling rose illuminating a single bulb which is woefully inadequate. I'd like to install a junction box and split this to two fluorescent tube lights equally space along the garage.

The question is "Am I allowed to do this without professional assistance or approval" ?  I have a nagging issue that a few years back the laws were changed regarding electrics and especially DIY electrics.

Can anyone “enlighten” me ?

It needs to be done by a "competent" person. That could be yourself if you feel competent enough, but IMO it's probably best left to a professional.

I quite happy to do it, I've done replacement electrics beofre with no hassles - however this is not replacement. As for being competent.........

You shouldn't need a part p certificate if your only adding an extra light to an existing supply in a garage. If your competent to do it go for it.
