As for cost.....you are looking at about £50 to £70 dependant on where you get it, although cracked versions are available Wink

How viable/expensive would it be to pick up a copy of Windows 7 and install that on a laptop bought with Windows 8? Are Windows 8 laptops cheaper because the requirements are lower (i.e. might not run Win 7) or just because they're the current mass market laptops?

Probably very viable. Win8 is just the current edition, and uses similar architecture to 7 from what I've gathered- anything that runs 8 should run 7 and visa-versa. I have no idea about price, and most laptops come with auto-install now, so the first time you turn it on, Windows installs from the Hard Drive as opposed to from a disc that you insert, so that part of the process could be an effort.

Also Windows 8 license is backward compatible so it's perfectly legal to do.

Although I guess then I'd also create just that very support issue for myself that I was looking to avoid. Dagnabbit!

It's probably easier than windows 8. And would stand him in far better stead for the future I'd have thought.

I'd imagine knowledge of *nix would transfer a piece of piss to windows, apart from it's total lack of a proper console. Get him on Ubuntu and he would be a proper wiz by the time he's 12.

Edit. You've saved me a job there Paul, I need the same info for a ten year old for Christmas.

Information is going to be irrelevant in 5 months.
