Got to go with Fraser myself too, played when I started watching in the 80s and was a class act for a long time.

There's no doubt Given is a better 'keeper, but he was only here on loan, so in my book he doesn't really count.

Carlisle was one of the highlights of that season for me.  Was thinking of that game while typing my reply too.

Digby was an absolute legend, and the respect he has still was shown when he was doing that penalty shoot out at half time in a game last season.

To Fraser Digby!  Beers

Sammy Burton kept goal from just after the war .....until the very early 60's, about a 13 year career ...local fella never played for any body else.

He was just before my time.....my father tells me that in the those days of centre forwards barging keepers into the goal holding the ball...(Nat Lothouse stylee)....Sammy would come for crosses to punch the ball clear, slightly mis time it to punch the centre forward in the head.

Oh and he didn't wear gloves, but sported a flat cap.

Sounds like a ledgend.  Great write up on swindon-town-fc.co.uk:

Quote

After the war, young goalkeeper Sam Burton was signed as a part-time professional. Unfortunately, he hadn't completed his National Service, and he was assigned to a mine in South Wales, where he stayed for almost two years. By the time he got back, he found himself third in the pecking order for the number one jersey.

It was 1950 before Burton became Swindon's first choice, a position he kept for eleven years, making over 500 appearances. Only injury would keep Burton out of the team - he even kept future Irish international Norman Uprichard out of the side.

After being rewarded with a testimonial, Burton's final game came just two days before his 35th birthday, in an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Kettering in the FA Cup.

I was going to nominate Whits to be our goalkeeper but I misunderstood the name of the topic  Oops

It must be Digby.
