I fucking wish it was, not any more unfortunately. Its been prevelant over her for about 6 or 7 years now. The prom dress, hire a car, pay for the prom etc this one has cost us around £400, £400 which we can ill afford but its pretty much expected these days.

Wish it would stay as a yank thing, along with the big fuss that is made about Halloween. What next Independance day ? Thanksgiving ?

I'm with Bob. Proms are an American thing. If the kids want to shell out £400 of their own money on something they're going to wear once just so they can pretend they're on the set of Grease, let them. Ridiculous waste of money.
And hiring a fucking car?! Jesus wept.

I'm genuinely surprised at reading this. I have been unfortunate to see those shows on MTV 'my super sweet 16' and the like and was always thankful that we didn't have something similar over here. Sure when we had our leaving party we just got a 6 pack of tennants lager (it was in Scotland) and had a big party. Pretty sad state of affairs that this sort of thing appears to now be the norm, I feel sorry for you JJ that you have to shell out money that you can't afford. I am sure you would much rather spend it in a million other ways on her!

Sorry - I was not very clear with my comment. It should have read... If the kids want to shell out £400 of their own money on something they're going to wear once just so they can pretend they're on the set of Grease, let them.
In other words, brow-beaten parents like JJ shouldn't have to foot the bill for this nonsense. I'm feeling curmudgeonly this afternoon.

haha, maybe I wasn't clear. I was agreeing 100% with you Ardiles. My comment about being genuinely surprised was more at the prom thing as a whole, a total nonsense!!
