Is the first one (the 70's one) now IV?
Yes, as it always has been*. *well not strictly true...since 1981 though.

I've just bought my lad the full box set. I've seen the early ones but can't really remember them that well.

I've got a few questions for the Star Wars geeks:
1) why is all the technology in I-III better than that in IV-VI ? Apart from death stars. 2) if all stormtroopers are clones of Jango Fett, and all appear to be identical in I-III, why are they different heights in IV-VI? 3) why if your trying to hide children, Luke and Leia, does Obi-wan allow Luke to keep the Skywalker surname?

1. Because the galaxy has been ravaged by war 2. A bad batch 3. Because he is living as his aunt and uncle's adopted son.

In my mind 1, 2 & 3 don't really exist, they are merely a children's book to get kids indoctrinated into the ways of the force at an early age.
If Lucas had kept them simple with minimal CGI and had cast better (ie not that wooden prick Hayden whatshisname) they may have work.
The good things to come out of out 1, 2 & 3 are
1. Darth Maul - up their with Bobba Fett in terms of coolness 2. The soundtrack 3. Natalie Portman's nipples
Surely this poll should be which is best - Leia in the gold bikini or Portman's wet t-shirt.
