Me and my girlfriend are moving to the next town along (East Grinstead) and currently she's unable to drive, so we're a bit concerned about her seeing friends, getting to work etc...  There is public transport, but it's not ideal and as she's a shift worker (care assistant) there aren't always buses available so she may face getting a taxi.

We're embarking on our first mortgage, so money is a little tight.  However, a friend of hers has just split up with her boyfriend who has left her with a brand new unregistered scooter which she is looking to flog.  She's after £500 for the bike itself.

How much does it cost to get the bike on my road and my missus legal i.e.: provisional, tax, helmet, test?  I know the insurance is circa £120 a year.

I'd love to get her sitting her driving test, but I doubt we could afford to run two cars, and she wouldn't get insured as a new driver on my car.

What would you do???

Not sure how much a provisional is these days.

Tax is £15 a year.

Helmets are anything from £50 (too cheap IMO) to £1,000s.

CBT was £120 when I sat it, but that was 4 or so years ago.

And £120 a month for insurance?! I paid £99 for a year when I had a moped.
