I was phoned by my mobile phone insurance provider last night to discuss identity fraud insurance.  I discovered that the fella phoning me was a Crewe Alex fan - we of course had a chat about one Gareth Whalley - he was telling me how good a player he is.

Apparently he can't shoot to well, but hopefully that wont matter too much, he also said though that at the time of Danny Murphy going to Liverpool that he thought Whalley was the better player out of the two - let's hope he's right.

Out of all of the new signings I am most excited about Whalley.

That's not fair.  He was brilliant for a time, but really didn't flourish after a couple of seasons at Liverpool like he should have.  Might come good again, but when he joined Liverpool he was a very hot prospect.  Don't forget he was rated highly enough to play for England at one time.

Also he was a thorne in Man Utd's side for a while, so that makes him OK for me.

How do you pronounce his name?

Phonetically I've been saying "Wally"

But I've heard "Wayley" on the tv.

I've presumed the former.  Not heard his name on TV though.  The guy on the phone - the Crewe fan - didn't correct me at all when I said it the 'wally' way, so I'm still assuming that's right.

Bet he comes out mid-season like Jenas to tell us all off for saying his name wrong now.

I've only heard positive things about Whalley, seems a much better prospect than Grant Smith.

I really do pray to god he and Migz stay fit all season. I cant wait to see those two together in the middle

I went to school with brothers from a family called Whalley and it was pronounced as wally.
