Chipboard flooring is usually 18mm or 22mm.

Can't you take the board up and find out? That's the point of floorboards isn't it?

That's the problem with modern floors, big sheets of chip board are a nightmare to take up. Does sound like you have found a joist to drill into though.

Exactly this. I started off right in the corner and have moved in diagnoly about 4 inches (100mm Nev  ). 3 holes, no joy. (No puns please).
