This is probably the wrong time to say this (to go back to the original post), but the German people didn't give the Nazis a majority in the Reichstag. Even when the Nazis had banned some left wing newspapers, arrested people and put pressure on voters the most they got was 44%. Unsurprisingly however, this made them the largest party in the Reichstag, and so their leader was an obvious choice to be Chancellor (chosen by the President).
