What is there to see/do on the way to Wales? I'm climbing Snowdon (staying in Dolgellau) over the Royal Wedding weekend and wanted to make a bit more of the journey over there if there if possible. Was planning to go Birmingham/Shrewsbury way but that can easily be adjusted for fun shit like castles and pubs.

Think you're doing the best bit, however there is the Ffestiniog railway very near, visit Portmeirion (where the old TV series The Prisoner was filmed), or wander around Pwllheli or Porthmadog for seaside stuff and pubs.

The remains of the Roman amphitheatre/fort and Roman museum at Caerleon near Newport is pretty good. Not sure it's worth that much of a diversion though

Attingham Park just outside Shrewsbury is well worth a visit, as is Ironbridge - south of Telford.  Both not far from the M54.

The whole Ironbridge complex is so awesomely ace, that it requires more of a weekend on its own rather than a flying visit.

Very true.  Its so good, it almost made nearly a year working in Telford bearable.

Almost.

Thanks for all the advice people! We are visiting Ludlow on the way and doing this little railway thing and Porthmadog on the way back.
