I'm trying to sort out a Stag weekend for 10 "lads" in brighton in a few weeks, and was wondering if any of you fine folks had any recommendations on areas to aim for and pubs/restaurants/discoteques that are good for a bunch of ten 30 year old beer drinkers to go to.
Which roads/areas have got all the best pubs? Where abouts are the clubs? We don't like serious dance music, and would prefer cheesey tunes. What about dress code? Do you have to wear collared shirts and black shoes everywhere?
We're staying near the train station, so any advice on which direction to head in for a decent pint of ale and a slap up meal?

Straight down from the station along West Street is your mainstream bars - Yates, ex-Walkabout etc. It is meat-market-esque, and a bit shit to be honest. Along here you have Oceana and TRU, which are both pretty dire. If you've been to Oceana before, I'd avoid this one as it has narrow corridors - a massive problem for a club, trust me.
To get to the good bars in Brighton, you need to go a bit off the beaten track. Font and Smugglers are both good if you can find them, and Heist is along the aforementioned West Street but is an excellent little gothic-style bar.
Don't go anywhere without collared shirts or shoes, you're fucked. It'll also be difficult to get in places with groups of larger than four so may be worth phoning ahead!
What night are you going out on?

Places still insist on colars and shoes? Fucking hell!
As a rule, anywhere that makes such demands isn't the sort of place i want to hang out in.

We're a group of 10 going out on a Saturday night, having been on the sauce since 10am and travelling down on the train to arrive at around 6pm or so. Check in at the hotel, spray a bit of Sex Panther on and off to eat and drink. West Street sounds hideous, but where else can you go to get your groove on? What's Mexico Red's place like?

I haven't strayed too far off West Street. I live in Crawley, and usually by the time I get to Brighton I'm too merry to explore too much. The seafront has quite a few clubs, most of them quite small (or intimate!). Mex's place is excellent. I don't know whether its still the case, but last time they weren't too fussy on dress. I'll let Mex tell you about it... he knows it slightly better than me! If you're after cheese and mainstream dance though it may not be for you. Coalition might be more up your street, but again it all depends exactly what you are after. I did go to Komedia in Brighton on Saturday which was excellent. A great place to start the night with live stand-up before moving on to a few bars. It also gets you starting away from the dreaded West Street and you can mosey along the backstreet and find suitably quirky bars... Not cheap though... £4 a beer and £18 for tickets.

I'm allowed in, so it must be quite liberal?!?! Why is Brighton so fussy with groups of over four? I can understand some semblence of logic, but it seems an absolute rule which is surely detrimental to the town's primary revenue stream (one would assume)?!

Youre allowed in because if you cause trouble you just get a clip round the ear.
We dont let groups in because if one kicks off suddenly there is twenty people fighting, hence we hardly ever have trouble in my club, west street however .....

Damn.... I was going to recommend your club to a 30 strong party of lingerie models.
As they won't be allowed in where else can you recommend?

A very sensible policy, and considering I've never met 4 of the group (all of whom are from Croydon) I don't really know what they're like. We are all lingerie models, though. Does that help? I'll PM you now MR.
